Book excerpt: This book unites two symposia from the 2003 MRS Fall Meeting in Boston to address data storage. As the size of material objects approaches nanometer dimensions, the material's structural and electronic properties change. The investigation of factors such as quantum size effects and the impact on next-generation recording media will become even more crucial in the near future, when recording densities approach Terabit/square inch. Therefore, the development of novel instrumentation to explore physical properties at these length scales are becoming more important. Results published here from Symposium GG, Advanced Characterization Techniques for Data Storage Materials, feature characterization techniques including imaging, manipulation and chemical imaging of magnetic, phase change and oxide materials. Symposium HH, Phase Change and Nonmagnetic Materials for Data Storage, gathers researchers working on materials issues related to electronic and optical phase change storage media. From a materials perspective, similar issues are researched in both types of storage technologies. The results published here focus on both applied and fundamental aspects of storage properties.

This remarkable individual could, without special training, compete with the well-funded establishments of learning and industry in the second half of the last century and leave us an incredible legacy of brilliant innovations with a lasting impact on our lives. His achievements extend over amazingly diverse fields and have or are prone to create new industries of great societal value. The phase change memories of commonly used rewritable CDs and DVDs as well as of new flash memories are his invention; so are the Ni Metal hydride batteries which are the enabling batteries for electric and hybrid/electric vehicles. The future hydrogen economy will utilize his efficient and safe hydrogen storage alloys. He has developed light and ultralight photovoltaic solar panels for converting sunlight into electricity and built the largest manufacturing facility for thin film flexible solar roofing materials. A common theme of his inventions is the synthesis of new materials utilizing novel aspects of structural and compositional disorder. The book explains for each of Ovshinsky''s innovations the essence of his pioneering ideas and inventions. These introductions are followed by a selection of Ovshinsky''s seminal publications and, for each subject category, a list of his patents which reveal the inventive mind of this unusually creative person. Ovshinsky''s example of gaining a deep understanding of the science underlying his inventions, his perseverance as well as his ability to attract and inspire talented collaborators will be a role model for entrepreneurs of this century.

Book excerpt: The advent of nanomaterials has introduced a new dimension in applications of energetic and reactive materials. A fundamental understanding of their synthesis mechanisms, atomic- and molecular-scale structural characteristics, and an evaluation of properties combined with modeling of the limits to those properties are required to realize the full potential of energetic and reactive nanomaterials. Many techniques have been recently developed that make it possible to exploit the benefits of the "nano" structure and design materials with desired energy release rates and energy densities, while they also improve their safety, reliability and load-bearing capability. Advances in modeling and characterization have made it possible to determine mechanisms controlling the thermal, chemical and mechanical behavior of nanomaterials. This volume brings together researchers from around the world to assess fundamental studies on synthesis, characterization of structure, and evaluation of properties of energetic/reactive nanomaterials. Applications such as new propellant formulations, underwater detonation developments, biomedical research, and combustion of nanolayered metal films for cladding materials are featured. Topics include: applications and toxicology; synthesis; characterization; characterization and theory; theory and modeling; and general discussion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measure of a thermoelectric material is given by the material's figure of merit. For over three decades the best thermoelectric materials had a ZT = 1. Recently, however, there are reports of new methods of materials synthesis that result in improvements beyond this performance. In addition, rapid characterization, as well as faster theoretical modeling of thermoelectric materials, has resulted in a more rapid evaluation of new materials. This book offers a look at these results and provides a benchmark for the current state in the field of thermoelectric materials research and development. The focus is on new and innovative directions that will lead to the next generation thermoelectric materials for small-scale refrigeration and power generation applications. The book emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of the research needed to advance the science and technology of the field. Both theoretical and experimental studies are featured. Topics include: low-dimensional systems and nanocomposites; devices; oxides; skutterudites; complex bulk materials and measurements; novel approaches; and thermoelectric materials and technology.

Book excerpt: The availability of materials that can bind selectively to a target molecule is the key to unlocking a host of new technologies. Molecular imprinting is an established technology, which allows the synthesis of materials containing highly specific receptor sites having an affinity for a target compound. For example, molecularly imprinted materials can mimic some of the functions of enzymes through the creation of three-dimensional cavities of specific size and shape for biorecognition of bioactive compounds. This volume offers a forum for technical exchange among members of the worldwide community of scientists and engineers who work in the area of molecular imprinting. Researchers from academia, government and industry present results in applications of molecular imprinting related to catalysis, combinatorial and computational methods, new monomers and recognition strategies, sensors, drug discovery and therapy, and new molecular imprinting formats.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty years after the discovery of a quasicrystalline compound, the field of quasicrystals still raises interest and is continuously evolving. Quasicrystals display properties different from conventional crystals with small unit cells and present interesting potential for industrial purposes. This book offers an updated look into the field of quasicrystalline research. For example, a report on electrodeposited Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals shows great promise for industry. It is also demonstrated that when Al-Cu-Fe quasicrystals are used as catalysts, in particular at high temperatures, such quasicrystals outperform conventional industrial catalysts. A new class of quasicrystal, based on a novel type of local order differing from previously observed Mackay- and Bergman-type quasicrystals, is featured. A detailed description of layer-by-layer growth of a Cu film on a quasicrystalline surface is also provided. Additional topics include: synthesis and structure; transport properties; electronic properties; mechanical properties; quasicrystals from metallic glasses; surfaces and coatings; and applications and hydrogen storage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The catastrophic effect, as well as a potentially advantageous effect, from energetic beams is the instant high-energy deposition in a local volume, down to the nanoscale, and the rapid cooling processes resulting in changes in the structure and properties of materials that are hard to achieve by other methods. The challenging balance between controlling radiation damage and enhancing material properties has intrigued materials scientists and physicists, as well as engineers in the nuclear and semiconductor industry, and caused them to work closely together for many years. As clearly demonstrated in this volume, many new technologies for creating unique functional devices with energetic particle beams are based on the fundamental study of radiation-induced defect production and evolution. Scientists and engineers working in nuclear engineering, environmental sciences and functional materials share a common language and numerous opportunities for collaboration in this truly interdisciplinary area. Exciting and promising results are presented here, including the most recent progress in fundamental understanding of radiation effects using molecular dynamic (MD) and kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations, processing of monodisperse nanoparticles by ion implantation, production of a wide variety of nanostructures with the application of focused ion beams (FIB), and creating new types of nanoscale functional devices using high-energy ion tracks. These results demonstrate the important relation between fundamental research on radiation effects and the development of new types of nanoscale functional devices using energetic particles over a wide energy range. Topics include: radiation effects in nuclear materials; ion-beam processing of nanostructures; ion-beam processing of semiconductor devices; ion-beam modification of physical properties; modeling and computer simulation of beam-solid interactions; and ion-beam-assisted deposition and surface modification.
