Book excerpt: Non-uniform combustion, as encountered in diesel and gas turbine engines, furnaces, and boilers, is responsible for the conversion of fossil fuel to energy and also for the corresponding formation of pollutants. In spite of great research efforts in the past, the mechanism of non-uniform combustion has remained less explored than that of other combustion types, since it consists of many, mostly transient processes which influence each other. In view of this background, a group research project, "Exploration of Combustion Mechanism", was established to explore the mechanism of combustion, especially that of diffusive combustion, and also to find efficient ways to control the combustion process for better utilization of fuel and the reduction of pollutant emission. The group research was started, after preparatory activity of 2 years, in April 1988, for a period of 3 years, as a project with a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research of Priority Area subsidized by the Ministry of Education, Science and Culture of Japan. The entire group of 43 members was set up as an organizing committee of 13 members, and five research groups, consisting of 36 members. The research groups were: (1) Steady combustion, (2) Unsteady spray combustion, (3) Control of combustion, (4) Chemistry of combustion, and (5) Effects of fuels. At the beginning of the project it was agreed that we should pursue the mechanism of combustion from a scientific viewpoint, namely, the target of the project was to obtain the fundamentals, or "know why", rather than "know how" of combustion.

Book excerpt: A new combustion rig is described which is designed to acquire rapid and detailed information on the combustion processes occurring within a sector of large annular gas turbine combustors operating over a range of inlet pressures and temperatures representative of engine conditions. Gas samples are extracted using a probe positioned within the volume under examination and transferred to a system designed to perform analyses with a point-to-point cycle time of less than 30 seconds. A computer is used to control and synchronise the probe positioning and gas analysis function and to present co-ordinated results to rig controllers. The system is capable of automatic traversing within a prescribed volume or of control by a dummy traverse gear which permits tracing of air and fuel flows. This paper outlines the main features of the rig, together with the types of instrumentation, the methods and range of operation used and anticipated.

Book excerpt: Internal combustion engines have remained a challenge due to depending heavily on fossil fuels, which are already limited reserves, and a requirement for improvement in emission levels continuously. The number of advanced technologies such as hybrid systems and low-temperature combustion engines has been introduced, and a number of reports about the use of alternative fuels have been presented in recent years to overcome these challenges. The efforts have made the new concepts to be used in practical along with the new problems which are required advanced control systems. This book presents studies on internal combustion engines with alternative fuels and advanced combustion technologies to obtain efficiency and environment-friendly systems, measurement methodology of exhaust emissions and modelling of a hybrid engine system, and mechanical losses arising from ring-cylinder and ring-groove side contacts as well. The main theme here is to identify solutions for internal combustion engines in terms of fuel consumption, emissions, and performance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the basic theories of thermodynamics are adequately covered by a number of existing texts, there is little literature that addresses more advanced topics. In this comprehensive work the author redresses this balance, drawing on his twenty-five years of experience of teaching thermodynamics at undergraduate and postgraduate level, to produce a definitive text to cover thoroughly, advanced syllabuses. The book introduces the basic concepts which apply over the whole range of new technologies, considering: a new approach to cycles, enabling their irreversibility to be taken into account; a detailed study of combustion to show how the chemical energy in a fuel is converted into thermal energy and emissions; an analysis of fuel cells to give an understanding of the direct conversion of chemical energy to electrical power; a detailed study of property relationships to enable more sophisticated analyses to be made of both high and low temperature plant and irreversible thermodynamics, whose principles might hold a key to new ways of efficiently covering energy to power (e.g. solar energy, fuel cells). Worked examples are included in most of the chapters, followed by exercises with solutions. By developing thermodynamics from an explicitly equilibrium perspective, showing how all systems attempt to reach a state of equilibrium, and the effects of these systems when they cannot, the result is an unparalleled insight into the more advanced considerations when converting any form of energy into power, that will prove invaluable to students and professional engineers of all disciplines.

Book excerpt: Numerical and experimental methodologies were developed in the dissertation with the goal of improving internal combustion engine control and decreasing engine-out exhaust emissions leading to mitigated impact on the environment. An innovative numerical method for simultaneous determination of the pressure and the top dead centre offset, which significantly reduces computational time compared to other methods, is presented in the numerical part of the dissertation. The experimental part of the dissertation comprises: - Development of a novel approach for the utilization of a pure tire pyrolysis oil (TPO) in a turbocharged and intercooled internal combustion engine without any hardware modifications with the introduction of the pilot injection. - Establishment of a partially premixed combustion (PPC) concept with a direct injection of diesel fuel, which also represents a benchmark for a novel fuel (TPO - a representative of low reactivity fuels) being assessed in the PPC. - Development of a methodology for the utilization of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO)/gasoline mixture in PPC. - Development of a methodology for establishing reactivity controlled compression ignition operation leading to a reduction of particulate matter and NOx emissions below EURO 6 levels without utilization of exhaust after-treatment systems at medium-load engine operation in a non-modified combustion chamber.
