Book Synopsis Analysis and Simulation of the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) Electrical System Architecture by : Gabriel Beltran
Download or read book Analysis and Simulation of the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) Electrical System Architecture written by Gabriel Beltran and published by . This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) is a high water speed amphibious armored personnel carrier that will replace the current family of Marine Corps amphibious assault vehicles. The AAAV is currently in Phase I of the DOD Acquisition Process. During this phase-extensive development, testing is being conducted and prototypes are being constructed. Ongoing tests of the current electrical system architecture are revealing problems and issues that need to be addressed. Present testing is also revealing the need for a troubleshooting tool that can be used to simulate and test proposed solutions. A distributive computing effort is being conducted with Purdue University in order to provide the Marine Corps a tool where by it can test and evaluate the entire AAAV electrical system architecture. This document provides a general system description of the AAAV, an electrical system architecture overview, and a candidate electrical system description. Testing, modeling, and computer simulation efforts applied to the NBC (Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical) fan/ filter motor drive and battery banks are described and the resulting data analyzed. Current research is investigating an issue regarding energy being forced back into the high power distribution bus due to regeneration from sudden impacts on the vehicle turret. An ultra capacitor bank may be incorporated in the AAAV electrical system in an effort to mitigate the effect of this regenerative energy. Therefore, testing, modeling, and computer simulation of an ultra capacitor is also reported.
Book Synopsis Naval Mine Warfare by : National Research Council
Download or read book Naval Mine Warfare written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-09-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea mines have been important in naval warfare throughout history and continue to be so today. They have caused major damage to naval forces, slowed or stopped naval actions and commercial shipping, and forced the alteration of strategic and tactical plans. The threat posed by sea mines continues, and is increasing, in today's world of inexpensive advanced electronics, nanotechnology, and multiple potential enemies, some of which are difficult to identify. This report assesses the Department of the Navy's capabilities for conducting naval mining and countermining sea operations.

Book Synopsis Marines Under Armor by : Kenneth Estes
Download or read book Marines Under Armor written by Kenneth Estes and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-04-11 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this story of men, machines and missions, Kenneth Estes tells how the U.S. Marine Corps came to acquire the armored fighting vehicle and what it tried to do with it. The longtime Marine tank officer and noted military historian offers an insider's view of the Corps's acquisition and use of armored fighting vehicles over the course of several generations, a view that illustrates the characteristics of the Corps as a military institution and of the men who have guided its development. His book examines the planning, acquisition, and employment of tanks, amphibian tractors, and armored cars and explores the ideas that led to the fielding of these weapons systems along with the doctrines and tactics intended for them, and their actual use in combat. Drawing on archival resources previously untouched by researchers and interviews of both past and serving crewmen, Estes presents a unique and unheralded story that is filled with new information and analysis of the armored vehicles, their leaders, and the men who drove these steel chariots into battle. Such authoritative detail and documentation of the decisions to acquire, develop, and organize armored units in the U.S. Marine Corps assures the book's acknowledgement as a definitive reference.
Book Synopsis A Case Study of the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) Program from a Program Management Perspective by : Scott R. Adams
Download or read book A Case Study of the Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) Program from a Program Management Perspective written by Scott R. Adams and published by . This book was released on 1999-03-01 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research effort focused on the program management issues of the U.S. Marine Corps' Advanced Amphibious Assault Vehicle (AAAV) Program. The research answered the primary question of what were the critical program management decisions during the early phases of the program and how would an analysis of these decisions affect the future of the AAAV program. Interviews were conducted with key personnel from the AAAV office and General Dynamics Land Systems. Additionally, program documents and other relevant literature were reviewed. The key findings of the research effort concluded that reducing technical risk early in program is critical; Program Managers (PMs) must influence system design as early as possible; physical collocation of Government and contractor personnel facilitates the implementation of integrated Product and Process Development (lPPD) and Integrated Product Teams (lPTs); the use of IPPD and IPTs has helped the AAAV program but personnel need to be trained before implementation; adopting an evolutionary acquisition strategy will help prevent component obsolescence prior to fielding; and PMs should use special contracting provisions to incentivize contractors to reduce total ownership costs.

Book Synopsis Innovating in a Secret World by : Tina P. Srivastava
Download or read book Innovating in a Secret World written by Tina P. Srivastava and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our national security increasingly depends on access to the most sophisticated and advanced technology. Yet the next time we set out to capture a terrorist leader, we may fail. Why? The answer lies in a conflict between two worlds. One is the dynamic, global, commercial world with its thriving innovations. The other is the world of national security, in which innovation is a matter of life or death. The conflict is about secrecy. Innovating in a Secret World is a detailed examination of the U.S. government and innovation landscapes and of the current trends in often secret national security-related research and development (R&D). Based on case studies, detailed research, and interviews with executives at Fortune 500s, startup entrepreneurs, and military directors and program managers, this accessible and timely book is a must-read. Tina P. Srivastava evaluates whether the strategy of technology innovation in the world of national security leaves certain innovations behind or unintentionally precludes certain classes of innovators from participating. She identifies the unintended consequences and emergent behaviors of this conflict. This examination unfolds in a complex, dynamic system that includes the legal framework in which technology innovation must exist. For more than a decade Srivastava has been on the front lines of cutting-edge technology innovation. She suggests focusing on an emerging class of R&D strategy called "open innovation"--a strategy that broadens participation in innovation beyond an individual organization or division traditionally assigned to perform R&D activities. Through compelling stories of commercial and early government applications, she shows how open technology innovation strategies can enable, accelerate, and enhance technology innovation. Successful incorporation of open innovation into the previously closed U.S. government R&D landscape can yield profound benefits to both national security and global leadership.
