Book excerpt: Liquid Acquisition Devices for Advanced In-Space Cryogenic Propulsion Systems discusses the importance of reliable cryogenic systems, a pivotal part of everything from engine propulsion to fuel deposits. As some of the most efficient systems involve advanced cryogenic fluid management systems that present challenging issues, the book tackles issues such as the difficulty in obtaining data, the lack of quality data and models, and the complexity in trying to model these systems. The book presents models and experimental data based on rare and hard-to-obtain cryogenic data. Through clear descriptions of practical data and models, readers will explore the development of robust and flexible liquid acquisition devices (LAD) through component-level and full-scale ground experiments, as well as analytical tools. This book presents new and rare experimental data, as well as analytical models, in a fundamental area to the aerospace and space-flight communities. With this data, the reader can consider new and improved ways to design, analyze, and build expensive flight systems. Presents a definitive reference for design ideas, analysis tools, and performance data on cryogenic liquid acquisition devices Provides historical perspectives to present fundamental design models and performance data, which are applied to two practical examples throughout the book Describes a series of models to optimize liquid acquisition device performance, which are confirmed through a variety of parametric component level tests Includes video clips of experiments on a companion website

Book excerpt: The applied ends of the URI on advanced cryogenic propellants, namely the feasibility of preparing cryogenic materials with higher energy density than systems presently in use, have been met with two examples: solid hydrogens doped with atomic oxygen, and solid oxygen doped with atomic oxygen. Both of these systems have been demonstrated in the laboratory, and in the latter case, where doping number densites of order 1% have been achieved, a patent has been filed on the "Method for producing High Energy density Cryogenic Fuel". Additionally, methods of characterization, including quantitative calorimetry and spectroscopy, have been devised and implemented. The original proposal recognized the need for developing a fundamental scientific basis for such intended applications. There has been significant progress in this regard, developments that go beyond the immediate target of the URI. Practical methods for computation of energetics and dynamics in quantum hosts, and quantum many-body dynamics in extended systems, were developed and successfully applied. The rheology of solid hydrogens was studied, and characterized. Time resolved spectroscopic methods were devised and implemented to demonstrate that microscopic details inaccessible in frequency domain spectroscopy of condensed media, could be unravelled with unprecedented detail.

We are fortunate to have had the University of California at Berkeley, Ca!., as our host for the fifth national meeting of this kind. The move to the West Coast for this past Cryogenic Engineering Conference was prompted in part by the large concentration of missile activities which are to be found there. Recognition of cryogenic operations and techniques in the mis sile field is given in many of the included papers. The University of California was certainly wen suited for such a meeting as this because it was here that much early work was done in cryogenics. This pioneering in cryogenics is still evident today in the operation of the 72-in. bub ble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference salutes the missile industry and the cryogenic pioneers of yesterday and today at the University of California. Special thanks must go to Dr. D. N. Lyon from the Low-Temperature Laboratory of the University of California, who as chairman of the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee has worked tirelessly to increase the stature of this conference. vii ACKNOWLEDGMENT The Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee is deeply grateful for the continued support and interest of the following organizations who made the 1959 Cryogenic Engineering Conference possible. Book excerpt: Support from the National Science Foundation has made it possible for the tenth annual Cryogenic Engineering Conference, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania and capably directed by K. R. Atkins and his staff, to emphasize the major international advances in cryogenic engineering. This specific emphasis resulted in a final program of over one hundred papers and has made it necessary to publish the proceedings of the conference in two volumes. The first volume will be similar in nature to previous volumes in this series, while the second volume will feature the international aspect of the conference program. The latter volume, because of this distinction, will be entitled International Advances in Cryogenic Engineering. As in the past, the Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee gratefully acknow ledges the assistance of all the dedicated workers in the cryogenic field who have contributed their time in reviewing the preliminary papers for the program and the final manuscripts for this volume. Since the list of participants in this thankless task numbers well over one hundred, any attempt to acknowledge their individual contributions in the limited space available would be practically impossible.

Book excerpt: Molecular photodynamics in cryogenic solids are pursued in an effort to character the many-body interactions and dynamics that will control the possibilities of preparing, stabilizing, and subsequently using doped solid H2 as a propellant. While many of the experiments carried out involve inert rare gases, the photophysics sought in these experiments and theoretical developments form the fundamentals that transcend the specific host. In this class of issues are: (a) how to describe the interactions of open shell atoms, which by definition will be the nature of dopants in propellants; (b) development of a basic understanding for the relation between pair potentials and free energy, which controls diffusion kinetics of dopants in compressible solids; (c) to develop time resolved experimental tools to interrogate these in detail; (d) finally, we have carried out studies in one of the candidate systems, namely O doped solid D2. Aspects of this work have already been published. A list of the 1993-1994 publications from our group is included, all of this work has resulted either from the URI or the earlier funded AF contract on HEDM from the Phillips Laboratory.

Book excerpt: The 1965 Cryogenic Engineering Conference, in presenting the papers of its eleventh annual meeting takes this opportunity to gratefuIly acknowledge the assistance of Rice University and, in particular, R. Kobayashi and his staff for serving as hosts for this conference. This meeting, because of its proximity to the NASA Manned Spacecraft Center, has recognized the impact of the space age on the cryogenic field and has, there fore, attempted to emphasize this aspect of cryogenics to a greater degree than in past conferences. The highlight of this conference has been the presentation of the highest Cryogenic Engineering Conference award-The Samuel C. CoIlins Award-to its first recipient, Dr. Samuel C. Collins. This award, set up in his name, has recognized the outstanding contributions that Dr. S. C. CoIlins, retired Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has made in the field of helium liquefaction. His significant advances in various phases of cryogenics have been recognized inter nationaIly by numerous organizations. High on this list has been the tribute which was bestowed on hirn by the Kamerlingh-Onnes Laboratory in Leiden in awarding hirn the first Kamerlingh-Onnes gold medal to an American in 1958. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference, in addition to recognizing his pioneering work in helium liquefaction by the presentation of the Samuel C. Collins Award, also dedicates this volume of the Advances in Cryogenic Engineering to hirn.

Book excerpt: The year 1973 marked the first time that Atlanta, one of the cultural centers of the South, has hosted the Cryogenic Engineering Conference since its beginning in 1954. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference gratefully acknowledges the hospital ity of the Georgia Institute of Technology and the assistance of W. T. Ziegler and his staff in making the visit to Atlanta a pleasant and memorable one. Several significant changes were initiated at the 1973 Cryogenic Engineering Conference. These included a Conference theme on the subject of "Energy and the Environment," a new Conference format, and the beginning of a new Conference frequency of biennial meetings. While retaining the traditional topics of previous meetings, the 1973 Cryogenic Engineering Conference focused on the role of cryo genic engineering in the generation, distribution, and conversion of energy, and the related environmental effects. In these areas, much of the current interest stems from the environmental effects of LNG and liquid hydrogen as compared with other competing energy forms. These rapidly expanding areas may provide the impetus to cryogenic engineering in the 1970's that the space program provided in the 1960's. The Conference format was altered by the use of numerous invited papers highlighting the theme. These presentations were concentrated in plenary sessions initiating each day's activities, and in seminars designed to summarize the various aspects of the theme.

Similar meetings were held here in 1954 and 1956. The acceptance of over forty papers for this conference was certainly a sign of the increasing activity and interest in this engineering field. There seems little doubt that it will continue to grow, justifying the need for annual meetings. Book excerpt: The University of Colorado and the National Bureau of Standards have once again served as hosts for the Cryogenic Engineering Conference in Boulder, Colorado. In presenting the papers of this twelfth annual meeting, the 1966 Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee has again recognized the excellent cooperation which has existed between these two organizations over the past decade with regard to both cryogenic research and conference activity. This cooperation was demonstrated not only at the 1966 Cryogenic Engineering Conference but also at the International Institute of Refrigeration, Commission I Meeting, which was also hosted by these two organizations immediately following the Cryogenic Engineering Conference. These two meetings have provided attendees with one of the most comprehensive coverages of cryogenic topics that has ever been presented at one location. Emphasis on major international advances in helium technology at the International Institute of Refrigeration, Commission I Meeting has been possible largely through the National Science Foundation Grant GK 1116 to the University of Colorado. The Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee gratefully acknowledges this support because of its valuable international contribution to the Cryogenic Engineering Conference. As in the past, the Cryogenic Engineering Conference Committee is grateful for the continued assistance of all the dedicated workers in the cryogenic field who have contributed their time reviewing the preliminary papers for the program and the final manuscripts for this volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ORBITEC has conducted considerable R & D under various USAF and NASA contracts and company sponsored efforts to develop a new class of rocket propulsion devices, cryogenic solid rocket engines The basic concept of these engines is to freeze a propellant which is normally a gas at room temperature into a solid propellant grain. This solid grain is then combusted with a second propellant These rocket engines promise a number of advantages over conventional liquid rocket engines, including increased simplicity, safety, propellant density, and potentially performance with the addition of High-Energy Density Matter (HEDM's). ORBITEC has tested cryogenic solid hybrid rocket engines including the following propellant combinations: (1) solid oxygen/gaseous hydrogen; (2) solid hydrogen/gaseous oxygen; (3) solid methane/gaseous oxygen; and (4) solid methane-aluminum/gaseous oxygen. The primary focus of this paper is on solid oxygen/gaseous hydrogen. Work achieved to date includes: (1) a total of over 50 solid oxygen test firings; (2) establishment of regression rate data for the different propellant combinations, where the rates can be a factor of 20 to 40 times higher than conventional HTPB-based hybrids; (3) achievement of burn durations from 1 to 30 seconds; and (4) engine chamber pressures as high as 250 psi The potential applications include. research devices to test high-energy density matter (HEDM); hybrid rocket launch vehicle upper stages; or orbit transfer vehicles. During a current sponsored USAF Research Laboratory (RL, Edwards Air Force Base, CA) project, ORBITEC is to design, develop and test a larger, SOX/LH2 flight-type engine that will have throttling and O/F ratio control.
