Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adult Bible Classes and How to Conduct Them The names of all the persons to whom the authors are indebted would make a long list. A number of the chapters were published in The Sunday School Times as a' series of articles on The Adult Class. The chap ter on The Modern Bible Study and The Adult Class appeared in The Biblical World, May, 1903. We are indebted to these journals for permission to reprint these articles. The lesson courses accompanying the book as separate pamphlets are a selection made by the Editorial Board of The Pilgrim Press from a larger number presented. We wish to acknowledge our obli gation to Rev. H. L. Wriston, Rev. Edward M. Noyes and Prof. H. M. Burr for permission to use the courses we have incorporated in the pamphlet publica tions. The book and the courses owe much to a wide correspondence with persons engaged in adult class work. We wish here to express our gratitude, not only to those whose courses we used, but to many others, for courteous and often painstaking answers to our inquiries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Manual: Introductory Course on the Bible, for Teachers Training Classes and Bible Classes In this Bible Manual an introductory course on the Bible is offered, which it is hoped will be welcomed by those who desire a more' complete course on the Bible than the former First Standard course, for whom however the New Standard course seems too difficult. This Manual may also be used to advantage in catechetical classes and Adult Bible classes.' The author of this Manual gives it, neither as a work wholly original, nor as a compilation from the writings of others. While he availed himself of the ideas of others as far as he thought them adapted to his purpose, yet on every subject contained in the book he has thought for himself and done more or less original work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Adult Class in the Sunday-School: A Manual of Principles and Methods The adult class in the Sunday-school, as we know it, is the product of the last few years. It is a creation of the new Sunday-school stimulus, and in turn it has done much to inspire that stimulus. And the adult class of the present day is so new that it requires a new sort of teacher to guide it in the study of the Bible. This new sort of teacher must be willing to break with traditions. He must be willing to forego the absolutism of the old-fashioned adult-class teacher, and organize his class with directing officers and committees. He must be ready to adopt a new kind of recitation, or no recitation at all. He must accept a quite new relation between the class and the teacher. In the old days the pupils - the few that came at all - placed the teacher on a pedestal and bowed down before him. In these new days the teacher is only the senior partner in a company of business associates, seeking to do busi ness for the Master. The ideal adult-class teacher must also be inventive. As he is keen to recognize problems, he must be shrewd to meet them with his own devices. For example, does he note a lack of original work and study? Then he must make all kinds of alluring assignments of home work - the preparation of charts, of map talks, of talks on definite themes connected with the lesson subject. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sacred Gifts and Holy Gatherings This winter, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme “Sacred Gifts and Holy Gatherings.” The student book writer is Chuck Aaron; Martha Myre is the writer for the teacher book. Unit 1 What We Bring to God The quarter’s first four lessons explore the concepts of sabbath, giving offerings, celebrations, and giving from the heart by examining biblical texts from Exodus, Leviticus, Luke, Matthew, and Mark. The Lord’s Day (Exodus 20:8-11; 31:12-16) Acceptable Offerings (Leviticus 22:17-25, 31-33) Dedication of Firstborn (Exodus 13:13-15; Luke 2:22-32) A Generous Gift (Matthew 23:2-12; Mark 12:38-44) Unit 2 Four Weddings and a Funeral The first lesson in this unit reviews the relationship between Jacob and Rachel from the Book of Genesis, followed by a lesson from the Song of Solomon. The third lesson examines the relationship between Hosea and Gomer and deals with broken relationships, while the following lesson takes us to the Gospel of John and Jesus’ miracle at the wedding in Cana. The final lesson in this unit, again from John’s Gospel, deals with the death of Jesus’ dear friend Lazarus. A Bride Worth Waiting For (Genesis 29:15-30) The Most Beautiful Bride (Song of Songs 6:4-12) An Unfaithful Bride (Hosea 1) A Wedding in Cana (John 2:1-12) The Death of a Friend (John 11:38-44) Unit 3 Holy Days The four lessons that conclude this quarter’s study examine the holy days of Passover, celebrating God’s deliverance of the people as recorded in Exodus; and the Feast of Weeks, or Pentecost; the Day of Atonement; and the Festival of Booths, described in Leviticus. Passover (Exodus 12:1-14) Feast of Weeks (Leviticus 23:15-22) Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:11-19) The Feast of Booths (Leviticus 23:33-43) Based on the Uniform Series, this quarterly study presents stimulating lessons that explore the biblical message and how to apply it to daily life. The curriculum helps adults move from a focus on the Word to reflection on personal, family, church, and community concerns. Ideal for a variety of settings, lessons are Bible-based, Christ-focused, and United Methodist–approved. This curriculum can be used in adult Sunday school classes, mid-week Bible study, and small-group studies. Available in regular and large print or as an eBook.
