Book excerpt: This book discusses the adoption of learning management systems (LMS) in higher education institutions. It presents influential predictors that may impact instructors’ behavioral intention to adopt learning management systems in the context of Arab culture, as well as a unique model of technology acceptance that draws on and combines previous technology adoption models (i.e., a modified unified theory of acceptance and use of technology model – UTAUT2). Moreover, this study extends the UTAUT2 model by including Hofstede’s (1980) cultural dimensions, and technology awareness as the moderators of the model. It also describes the explanatory technique approach used to collect quantitative data from the instructors at higher education institutions in Saudi Arabia and were analyzed with structural equation modeling using SPSS/Amos software. The findings revealed that facilitating conditions were the strongest predictor of behavioral intention to adopt an LMS, followed by performance expectancy and hedonic motivation, technology awareness, and cultural dimensions exerted a moderating influence on instructors’ behavioral intention to use LMS in their teaching. By including new constructs, this becomes the first study of its kind exploring instructors’ use of LMS in Higher Educational Institutions of Saudi Arabia and other countries of the Middle East. It offers practical insights for a broad range of researchers and professionals at higher education institutions and serves as a reference guide for designers of learning management systems (e.g., blackboard systems), policymakers, and the Ministry of Education staff.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate three areas related to LMS adoption at universities: first, the relationships between faculty personal characteristics (age, gender, academic ranking, and years of teaching experiences) and their adoption of learning management systems (LMS); second, organizational support related to LMS adoption; and third, concern of time and fear of technology as inhibiting factors of using an LMS. The research compares faculty members at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas, and faculty members at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia. This study is related to the educational technology field in the higher education environment. Many universities in Saudi Arabia are in the early stage of adopting and using e-learning tools such as LMSs. There is a need to illustrate the best practice processes of adopting new technology in higher education contexts. This study should help instructors and university leaders determine the significant factors of successful adoption of educational technology tools. Rogers' (2003) diffusion of innovation theory was used to provide insights and guide the study as well as design the research questions. His work mentioned that about 49% to 87% of innovation adoption can be predicted according to five perceived attributes: (1) relative advantage, (2) compatibility, (3) complexity, (4) trialability, (5) observability. These data were obtained from 403 faculty members at Kansas State University. The data analysis showed that faculty members' personal characteristics influenced their LMS adoption. A MANOVA Pillai's Trace test results showed a statistical difference between faculty characteristics (age, p = .017 gender, p = .009 years of teaching experiences p = .042 and academic rank p = .000) and Rogers' five attributes of innovation at Kansas State University. Conversely, at King Saud University the data were obtained from 104 faculty members. The data analysis showed no influence between faculty members' personal characteristics and Rogers' five attributes of innovation. An ANOVA test was conducted and there was a statistical difference among faculty members at Kansas State University in all four independent variables (age, p = .004 gender, p = .000, years of teaching experience p = .012 and academic ranking, p = .008) and their perception of the organizational support related to their adoption of the LMS. On the other hand, there was no a statistical difference among faculty members at King Saud University in all four independent variables (age, gender, academic ranking, and years of teaching experience) and their perception of the organizational support related to their adoption of the LMS. The MANOVA Pillai's trace test result showed a statistical difference between faculty academic rank and fear of change of technology p = .021 and no statistical significance for time concern at Kansas State University. However, there was no a statistical difference for faculty members at King Saud University concerning all independent variables (age, gender, academic ranking, and years of teaching experience) with fear of change of technology and no statistical significance for time concern, as well. The study concluded with a recommendation for Kansas State University and King Saud University regarding learning management system adoption. In addition, important considerations for professional development and training among faculty members were also recommended. Finally, a recommendation for future research in the field of educational technology was proposed.

In spite of all these investments on E-learning facilities, academics face challenges that discourage them from changing to this mode of delivery.The goal of this study was to explore and examine academics perceptions on the factors that inhibit the adoption of E-learning in Higher education in Oman. The key focus of the study is on the examination of how the institutional and individual barriers affect the adoption of E-learning by academics. Thirty academics from three teaching faculties at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) participated in this study. Through teachers' semi-structured interviews and LMS use statistics, this study signifies the factors that hinder academics use of E-learning.The findings from this study reveal (a) that academics have positive perceptions of the use of E-learning in teaching and learning, (b) that academics perceive that lack of specialized training, lack of solid IT infrastructure, lack of accessible E-learning support, and lack of E-learning strategy are the main institutional barriers to academics' E-learning adoption, and (c) that academics believe that lack of awareness of E-learning effectiveness, lack of knowledge of integrating E-learning in teaching, and resistance to change were the main individual academics' barriers to E-learning adoption. Furthermore academics with more E-learning support structures have more positive attitudes and adoption level of E-learning. The findings from this study deepen our understanding of E-learning adoption in the higher education context in Oman through examining the issues associated with institutional barriers and their effect on individual barriers of academics' adoption of E-learning technologies.

The study examined teachers' concerns through the lens of the Concern Based Adoption Model (CBAM) framework. The data in this sequential mixed-method study were obtained through two phases. The first phase was quantitative data through the Stage of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ) and the second phase was qualitative data through an open-ended question on the SoCQ as well as semi-structured interviews. The results from the SoCQ indicated that teachers in the middle and secondary schools who were selected to implement the Future Gate LMS were in the early concern stages. The highest percentile score was Stage 0 Unconcern 87% followed by Stage 1 Personal 84%, Stage 2 Informational 83%, and Stage 3 Management 73%. The lowest percentile score was in Stage 4 Consequences 54% followed by Stage 5 Collaboration 59% and Stage 6 Refocusing 69%. A one-way MANOVA test revealed a statistically significant difference between teachers' stages of concerns and their gender and type of degree. It also revealed statistically significant differences between teachers' stages of concerns and their technographic characteristics (prior experience in educational technology use, type of professional development in educational technology, duration of professional development in educational technology, type of professional development in Future Gate LMS, and duration of professional development in Future Gate LMS). One-way MANOVA also revealed statistically significant differences between teachers' stages of concerns and technology availability in the classroom (technology in the classroom and Internet access in the classroom). The qualitative data analysis indicated that the top three concerns of teachers were centered around technology and Internet in the school, Future Gate LMS activation, and how students deal with Future Gate LMS. This study contributes to the literature to understand teachers' needs for successfully implementing innovations. Results obtained from this study are important for all stakeholders so that they can understand teachers' concerns regarding adopting the transformation to digital learning in Saudi Arabia as it is an important project for the Saudi Arabia 2030 vision.
