To address these concerns, firms often turn to technology to meet rapidly changing consumer demands, to provide differentiated offerings and to increase firm efficiency and productivity. Thus, the decision-making process that leads to the adoption of new technology is of great importance to marketers. Grounded in the resource-based view of the firm, this dissertation examines absorptive capacity and technological opportunism as firm dynamic capabilities and their role in delivering successful, firm-level technology adoption decisions. This research also examines the moderating role of internal micro-politics on the technology adoption process. With a qualitative and quantitative approach, this dissertation develops and tests an empirical model of the firm-level adoption decision process and its outcomes. Theoretical and empirical evidence provided by this research offers insights into the firm-level technology adoption process that should be of value to both researchers and practitioners. Analyses show that firm absorptive capacity and technological opportunism are instrumental in shaping the firm’s perceptions of a transformational technology, which in turn positively influences overall satisfaction with the adopted technology. In contrast to theoretical support, results also show that the positive relationship between a firm’s dynamic capabilities and its perceptions of a technology’s characteristics is negatively influenced by the presence of micro-political strategies used to garner internal buy-in and support for the technology adoption decision. These findings indicate marketers of technology should utilize this knowledge to guide client firms through the technology adoption process based on evaluations of the client firm’s level of dynamic capabilities and micro-political environment. Further, managers seeking to enhance product or service offerings through technology adoption should seek to develop their dynamic capabilities that inform adoption decisions. Additionally, managers should carefully manage stakeholder relationships to minimize any negative influence micro-political strategies may have on the decision-making process. Study limitations and areas of future research are also discussed.

Book excerpt: Adoption of disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence and blockchain, can improve organizational and operational flexibility and hence is a key source of corporate operational efficiency. However, surprisingly little is known about how political leaders affect corporate operational efficiency and the adoption of disruptive technologies. In this paper, we investigate how the operational efficiency of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in China changes as the city mayor approaches the mandatory retirement age. Local economic output (largely determined by SOEs' investment) is key for a mayor's promotion, but mayors who are approaching mandatory retirement have little chance of promotion and may switch their focus from economic output to efficiency for the sake of securing post-retirement benefits. We design a novel measure of operational efficiency that incorporates the ex-ante property of capital costs, and we show that SOEs have higher operational efficiency and adoption of disruptive technologies (such as artificial intelligence and blockchain technologies) when the city mayor approaches the mandatory retirement age. We find evidence that the improvement in operational efficiency involves active intervention from the retiring mayor (e.g., based on text analysis of annual city planning documents). Finally, the improvement correlates with a higher firm value growth rate but not with a decrease in employment growth or weaker pollution control. Collectively, our findings show that a mandatory retirement age of subnational leaders improves corporate operational management.

We propose that a greater amount of campaign donations to politicians is associated with less likelihood of new technology adoption. We also suggest that the local political environment at a more micro level moderates this negative relationship. Using the unique context surrounding the broadband market in North Carolina, we find support for our hypotheses. Our findings shed light on how technology adoption may be substituted with corporate political activities when the objective is to deter entry, and not to address increasing market demand or existing rivalry. We also illustrate that within a given institutional environment (state) lies heterogeneous markets at a more micro level (counties and municipalities) that serve as an important source of variance in technology adoption.

This paper explores the "opposite" question: Namely, what explains the absence of change? We apply existing theories of non-adoption to our case study, salt mining in the Sahara Desert, in order to generate new insights into barriers to technology adoption. We find that political organization establishes an environment for the formation of higher-order economic organizations, which in turn affect the direction and rate of technology adoption. Our setting seems exotic, but traditional methods of production persist in myriad impoverished settings, including those containing widespread artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) activity. The study thus sheds light on the role of institutions in economic growth.

Book excerpt: Electronic government, also known as e-government, refers to the use of information technology (IT) to advance the competence, effectiveness, intelligibility, and accountability of public governments (Kraemer and King 2006). Moreover, effective and efficient e-Gov is nowadays viewed as a necessity created by the increased and widespread use of ICT in the private sector. However, access to the internet and/or the technological infrastructure that e-government deployment warrants does not necessarily guarantee that the various governments will be willing to adopt e-government; and this is precisely what this thesis will seek to investigate. That is, the aim of this thesis is to identify the political, economic, and cultural determinants which seem to be important for the decision of a government to adopt e-government services. In doing so, a cross-national empirical study using Entity and Time Fixed Effects will be conducted, consisting of 215 country observations and covering the time period from 2003 to 2018. We argue that the size of a nation's shadow economy, as well as its levels of economic development, political instability, political polarization, corruption, connectivity, and levels of trust that a country's citizenry holds in its government, along with a nation's age demographics and political authority pattern, all play a significant role in a government's decision to adopt and invest in the deployment and development of e-government services. It is found that the factors that appear to promote adoption are a smaller shadow economy, greater democracy, less political polarization, greater trust in government, younger population and greater connectivity. Therefore, our results suggest that political reforms that would promote government transparency, more democratic institutions, as well as lower polarization, would lead to more e-government adoption. The main innovations of this thesis are that it is the only study, to the best of our knowledge, that seeks to understand what are the factors that drive governments to decide to implement e-government services, in contrast with the literature that has focused almost entirely on citizens' incentives for adoption, and in that we more comprehensively examined potential motivators by conducting a cross-national empirical study, which in turn contributed in filling a significant gap in the existing literature, granted that empirical studies were absent.
