Download or read book 1 Kings written by Jerome T. Walsh and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narratives of Solomon and Jeroboam, of Elijah and Ahab, have fascinated readers for millennia. They are the principal foundation of our knowledge of the history of Israel during the early years of the divided monarchy, and their reliability and verifiability as historical sources have long been the subject of intense scholarly analysis and debate. But even apart from questions of historical authenticity, they are gripping stories of richly drawn characters caught up in the complex tale of Yahweh's dealings with Israel: Solomon the wise is the builder of Yahweh's Temple, yet he becomes an idolater; Jeroboam is chosen by Yahweh as king, yet he worships the golden calves; Elijah is a prophet second only to Moses, yet he tries to renounce his calling; and Ahab is the worst of Israel's kings, yet shows traces of greatness. This study explores the narrative world created by the ancient Israelite author - the people who inhabit it, the lives they live and the deeds they do, and the face of God who is revealed in their stories.

How does the information on the author, historical background, and features of a Bible book help interpret that book? The Bible Knowledge Commentary answers these and other questions about the Scriptures, discussing all the Bible verse by verse and often phrase by phrase. In addition, maps, charts, and diagrams help you grasp the meanings of the biblical text. Unlike most others this commentary is by authors from one school - Dallas Theological Seminary. The Bible Knowledge Commentary -- popular in style and scholarly in content -- will deepen your understanding of God's written Word. The Bible Knowledge Commentary will be welcomed by a wide spectrum of Bible students, from the beginner, who will find it easy to understand and easy to use, to the advanced, who will find it consistently thorough and reliable. Download or read book King David written by D. Owen Kaiser and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words in the title, You Are the Man, convicted a deeply guilty King David of the heinous crimes he had committed against Uriah the Hittite, Bathsheba's husband. Yet, in many remarkable ways, David was God's man, chosen and blessed for greatness. This book tells a story of David's life from the Bible read as literally true. The flowing, easy-to-read narrative observes him progress from shepherd to king to his death. Walking with David through tragedy and triumph makes it easier to see the actual person behind this larger-than-life Bible character. "A fresh approach to the life of David." Pastor Tim Murdoch While David's sins and difficulties are not ignored, King David: You Are the Man highlights several positive events, including some lesser-known ones found only I Chronicles. King David was the man - whom God chose to be ancient Israel's second king, - who established daily praise and worship of God in Israel, - to whom God revealed eternal purposes for His Son and His kingdom, - who led Israel to an exalted place among the nations, - to whom God revealed the details of the temple Solomon would build, and - who organized the priests and Levites in their ministries of worship at that temple. "I feel as if I am getting to know David, and more than that, his faith. As a woman of faith, it sings to my heart .... I feel as if I am getting to know God better too " Halin I Soaring Included in this narration of David's life are - a history of the Ark of the Covenant, - a possible timeline of David's life, - a probe into the disastrous census that David ordered to be taken, (When considering the difficult questions posed by II Samuel 24:1 and I Chronicles 21:1, Pastor Mike Green expressed this credible idea: "I think God was angry with Israel because the tabernacle was in Gibeon.") - a history of the Levites and their development as God's special servants, and - several specific life disciplines that made David a man after God's own heart.

Book Synopsis Sex, Honor, and Power in the Deuteronomistic History by : Kenneth Stone
Download or read book Sex, Honor, and Power in the Deuteronomistic History written by Kenneth Stone and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 1996-11-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original work, Stone studies the structure and social presuppositions of several narratives from the Deuteronomistic History in which sexual activity plays a significant role. Both narratological and anthropological tools are utilized in the textual analysis. Stone interestingly notes the link between sexual activity, gender and prestige structures; the emphasis on male contest and female chastity discussed by anthropologists of honour and shame; and the role of the exchange of women in relations between men. In each story, sexual practice is primarily related to male struggles for honour and power.
Book Synopsis Sovereignty as Inviolability by : Frans-Willem Korsten
Download or read book Sovereignty as Inviolability written by Frans-Willem Korsten and published by Uitgeverij Verloren. This book was released on 2009 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sovereignty was a key issue in the baroque, and especially in the Dutch Republic with its incredibly complicated political organisation. Consequently, sovereignty was explored in and through Joost van den Vondel'S theatre plays. Vondel sensed a fundamental problem in the construction of Europe'S politico-cultural 'House'. The questions he asked with respect to that construction concerned the relationship between theology and politics, including in terms of gender and culture. Because these questions could barely be considered explicitly, let alone actually discussed, they had to be presented through literature theatre. A close reading of a number of plays reveals not only a pivotal discussion that concerns Vondel'S own times, but also an on-going struggle in the European exploration of sovereignty. In that context, power and potency a distinction made by Spinoza determine the status of sovereignty that any body can acquire.
