Book excerpt: Noting the need for middle school educators to learn directly from their students how they view the world, school, and their own learning, this book details findings from a study that used a quasi-ethnographic approach to examine the perceptions of young adolescents. Participating in the study were 2,000 adolescents, 10- to 15-year-olds. Subjects were students in grades 5 through 8 at 15 schools in 6 states. Data were collected through a 53-item instrument on which students wrote their responses to open-ended statement stems. Chapter 1 of the book discusses the need to explore the current social realities of learners and the importance of connecting students' attitudes, thoughts, and values to the schooling process; this chapter also presents the author's motivation for conducting the study, and describes the study methodology and data analysis. Chapter 2 discusses how young adolescents have defined their world and culture, summarizing common threads regarding students' views of truth, knowledge, power, rules, advice for various groups, life goals and experiences, war, "favorites," values, friendship, gender issues, the future, and school. Chapter 3 categorizes students' voices into generalizations related to young adolescents' development and perceptions of their development, perceptions of family, and perceptions of school. Chapter 4 provides curricula implications from the identified trends in the above three areas. The book's two appendices contain the questionnaire given to students and selected questions with a sampling of responses by grade level and gender. Book excerpt: Sociologists of education have long stressed the importance of students’ expectations for their subsequent success. Yet, an insufficient amount of previous work has considered how academic and social psychological factors guide when and how students develop their expectations for the future, particularly for the socioeconomically disadvantaged and minority students attending our cities’ schools. By using rich survey and administrative data from a large, urban district serving low income and predominantly Hispanic and African American students, this dissertation identifies how these students develop expectations related to higher education in general as well as science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) in particular at the start of high school. Chapter 2 examines whether Hispanic girls hold higher college expectations than Hispanic boys because they acquire a superior toolkit of academic resources including achievement, attitudes, and relationships, and/or whether girls are better able to leverage these resources. Further, it considers the potentially gendered role of nativity, language-minority, and socioeconomic status in shaping college expectations among Hispanic students. Chapter 3 analyzes how students’ perceptions of the relevance of science outside of school contribute to gender differences in expectations to major in specific areas of STEM, namely the biological and physical sciences as compared with computer science and engineering. Chapter 4 unpacks the extent to which minority students expecting to major in STEM anticipate that gender- or race-based discrimination may act as a barrier to their goals. Taken together, the findings of these studies underscore the importance of perceptions related to schools, society, and opportunity at the intersection of gender and race/ethnicity for guiding students’ expectations, an important precursor to subsequent behavior and success.

These growth trajectories differed by gender and ethnicity. In addition, when school engagement was examined as a multidimensional construct, the various dimensions of school engagement contributed differently to academic performance and truancy. In my third study, I examined the relationships among middle-school adolescents' perceptions of school climate, achievement motivation, and school engagement (behavioral participation, school identification, and self-regulated learning). I found that adolescents' perceptions of distinct dimensions of school climate in 7 th grade contributed differentially to the three types of school engagement in 8th grade. In addition, I found that adolescents' perceptions of school climate in 7th grade influenced their three types of school engagement in 8th grade directly, as well as indirectly through achievement motivation.
