Download or read book Population and Poverty in the Developing World written by Massimo Livi-Bacci and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 1999-04-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing gap between developed and developing world will be one of the most important themes of the 21st century. The contributions contained in this volume take a multidisciplinary approach to the problem, offering a comprehensive review of the theoretical issues and empirical findings that relate to the complex and multidirectional link between poverty and demographic behaviours and outcomes in the contemporary developing world. The starting point of the volume is an exact definition of poverty. The contributors go on to analyse in the detail its causes and effects, both at the micro and macro level, concentrating on those factors and consequences which relate more directly to the demographic sphere. Population growth, household structure and labour, fertility, AIDS, urbanization, migration, and mortality are amongst the areas covered, with the major themes discussed and elaborated in an introductory overview chapter.

Book Synopsis Liberia by : International Monetary Fund. African Dept.
Download or read book Liberia written by International Monetary Fund. African Dept. and published by INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pro-Poor Agenda for Prosperity and Development 2018 to 2023 (PAPD) is the second in the series of 5-year National Development Plans (NDP) anticipated under the Liberia Vision 2030 framework. It follows the Agenda for Transformation 2012-2017 (AfT). It is informed as well by lessons learned from the implementation of the Interim Poverty Reduction Strategy 2007 (iPRS) and the Poverty Reduction Strategy (2008-2011). The fundamentals underpinning the PAPD are: i) Liberia is rich in human and natural resources; but ii) is deprived of development largely because its human capital lacks the knowledge to transform the natural resources into wealth—whether through farming, mining, fishing, or other productive ventures that require technology or financial investments. Consequently, Liberia is relatively rich in natural capital but relatively poor in relations to its peers in both human and produced capital. Moreover, because of a legacy of entrenched inequality in access to development opportunities, widespread infrastructure deficits and pervasive poverty have become the binding constraints to future growth and prosperity.
Book Synopsis Gender Inequalities and Vulnerability of sub-Saharan Adolescents by : Yves Charbit
Download or read book Gender Inequalities and Vulnerability of sub-Saharan Adolescents written by Yves Charbit and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyses the vulnerability of adolescent girls, which results from cumulative inequalities: gender, lack of education, residential, and poverty. It is based on original analyses of data from the national survey carried out by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Analysis in collaboration with UNICEF. The book discusses three main themes. First, the experience of adolescence: access to globalization, via access to TIC (Trusted Internet Connections) and mass media; subjective well-being; smoking and alcohol consumption; child discipline and domestic violence are discussed. Secondly, the book focusses on the beginning of fertile life: child marriage; early pregnancy; prenatal care; birth weight and breastfeeding. HIV/AIDS and sexuality. The third theme touches on the potential contribution of adolescents to harvesting the demographic dividend: fertility and contraception; postnatal care and vaccination of children; pre-school learning; education and gender; household health vulnerability (water and sanitation). On the basis of the analyses of data, implications regarding concrete policy measures aimed at reducing the vulnerability of adolescents are identified at the end of each chapter. Through the richness of the analyses and the methodological rigor, this book provides an interesting read to both specialists and non-specialists interested in adolescence and the future of Benin, Africa and beyond. The [basis of the] English translation of this book from its French original manuscript was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent human revision of the content was done by the author.
