Book excerpt: "Current officer professional military education (PME) is lacking in the education of special operations field grade officers due to lack of regulatory guidance. Special operations officer should be afforded PME founded upon the instruction of history, theory, doctrine and research of special operations and its issues. In this way, special operations officers would be afforded perspectives and development uniquely concerned with the issues they could face in future assignments. The development of special operations officers is fundamental to future successes and advancement of special operations. Over the last several decades, special operations have been heavily relied upon to achieve national security objectives, and this trend will continue for the foreseeable future. The continued reliance on the special operations community motivates an improvement in the development of its field grade officers"--Abstract.

Marshall, that "American military officers, of whatever service, should share common ground ethically and morally." In this new edition, the authors methodically explore that common ground, reflecting on the basics of the Profession of Arms, and the officer's special place and distinctive obligations within that profession and especially to the Constitution.

Book excerpt: One way to educate United States Army Special Operators is by allowing organizational design and individual competencies to form the nucleus of a professional military education curriculum routinely evaluated against assessment variables such as the emerging strategic context, the requests of Theater Special Operations Commands or other customer units, and the feedback of deployed operators and teams. This thesis recommends an Army Special Operations Command-focused educational development process applicable to the career-long education and utilization of Special Forces, Civil Affairs, and Psychological Operations professionals. To make these recommendations, the thesis considers why the organizational structure of the Army Special Operations Forces (ARSOF) should differ from that of their General Purpose Forces counterparts and identifies the expected ARSOF mission set for the next twenty years as well as the professional competencies required to execute this expected mission set. It then offers a series of suggestions for how the recommended changes could be implemented.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this monograph is to examine whether the measures of effectiveness used in Special Forces officer education venues are sufficient to address the operational requirements over a career in a holistic manner. Past education evaluations approach measurements in an isolated manner and are limited temporally. The educational experiences of the officer over a career have many lasting aspects that should be evaluated in context if approached in a holistic fashion and, in great part, should be in the same lines as operational requirements. In order to recognize these aspects in relation to the changing nature of requirements, an education base that is even broader than what is provided today may provide additional avenues of approach to both the requirements and relevant measures of evaluation. Consequently, since it is unrealistic to expect students to be any better than their educators, education professionals need to be grown from within the Special Forces community to serve as 'educational artists' linking the strategic education requirements of the future with the tactical implementation of Special Forces officers. The methodology of this paper is to examine the context of Special Forces officer education through its brief history and consider how its effectiveness is managed. Typical measures of effectiveness are considered demonstrating common limitations use. This examination is relevant due to the nature of current and near-term threats which may involve continually changing conflicts that actually exceed the time period of an officer's career. Broadening Special Forces officer education to include greater exposure to more disciplines would create better cognitive freedom for plans and operations. Similarly, measures of effectiveness that are structured to tie aspects of events back to educational experiences in the context of the officer's career can better provide the insight necessary to keep Special Forces education relevant, effective, and efficient."--Abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this encyclopedic book, Lewis provides insights into the origins, training, tactics, weapons and achievements of special forces and special mission units throughout the world, focusing particularly on US and UK forces. He also looks at the codes that that bind the members of these elite units together. He reveals training secrets in everything from wilderness survival to hand-to-hand combat. In doing so, he draws extensively on biographies, autobiographies, training manuals, interviews and press coverage of key operations. The elite forces covered include: The British Army's Special Air Service (SAS), established in 1950, which has served as a model for the special forces of many countries. Its counter-terrorist wing famously took part in the hostage rescue during the siege of the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. The Parachute Regiment, the airborne infantry element of 16 Air Assault Brigade, which spearheads the British Army's rapid intervention capability. It is closely linked to United Kingdom Special Forces. The US Navy's SEALS (Sea, Air, Land Teams), trained to conduct special operations in any environment, but uniquely specialised and equipped to operate from and in the sea. Together with speedboat-operating Naval Special Warfare Combatant-Craft Crewmen, they form the operational arm of the Naval Special Warfare community, the Navy component of the US Special Operations Command. Their special operations include: neutralizing enemy forces; reconnaissance; counter-terrorism (famously in the killing of Osama bin Laden); and training allies. The US Army's Delta Force: The Special Mission Unit, 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D), known simply as Delta Force, the Army component of Joint Special Operations Command. Its role is counter-terrorism, direct action and national intervention operations, though it has the capability to conduct many different kinds of clandestine missions, including hostage rescues and raids. The US Army Rangers, a light infantry combat formation under the US Army Special Operation Command. The Green Berets - motto: 'to free the oppressed' - trained in languages, culture, diplomacy, psychological warfare and disinformation. Russia's Spetsnaz, whose crack anti-terrorist commandos ended the Moscow theatre siege, and who have a reputation for being among the world's toughest and most ruthless soldiers. Spetsnaz units saw extensive action in Afghanistan and Chechnya, often operating far behind enemy lines. Israeli Special Forces, especially Shayetet 13 (Flotilla 13), whose motto, in common with the rest of the Israeli military, is 'Never again', a reference to the Holocaust. They are particularly adept at the specifically Israeli martial art Krav Maga, which they dub 'Jew-jitsu'.

Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School (SWCS). It seeks to determine the most accurate and relevant method of testing potential Special Forces soldiers and officers. Thesis study focuses on the validity of the current personal attributes required in a Special Forces soldier and the current testing methods employed to measure the required attributes set forth by SWCS. It also explores the issue of an additional selection program for the potential Special Forces officer. This study demonstrates that the current attributes required in the potential Special Forces soldier and officer are valid. However it recommends two additional attributes that will enhance the profile of the Special Forces soldier. It also demonstrates that the current testing methods of SFAS do not sufficiently test all the required attributes. This thesis recommends nine additional testing methods that adequately test all the required attributes for a Special Forces soldier and officer. This thesis focus on the assessment and selection program of SFAS; it does not discuss standards that must be achieved by the potential Special Forces soldier and officer.

Book excerpt: This fourth edition of the Special Operations Forces Operations Reference Manual was redesigned to support Joint Special Operations University's academic mission. It provides general information on U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force Special Operations Forces (SOF). More specifically, this document is designed to accomplish three broad purposes: 1. Provide a primary source of reference material on all SOF components 2.Provide an overview of special operations and SOF to facilitate a broader understanding of SOF capabilities to academic institutions and personnel who may not routinely use this data 3.Provide standard SOF reference data to SOF faculty members at professional military education institutions for use in their instruction The target audience for this manual spans from special operations staff officers and enlisted personnel at United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM), its component and subordinate commands, the theater special operations commands, conventional force/unifed commands and their staffs that may employ SOF in their areas of responsibility to partner-nation staffs, and both civilian and military educational institutions. This reference manual is doctrinally based, drawing information and data from joint, USSOCOM, and service publications. This reference manual is approved for public release; distribution is unlimited. Content for this fourth edition of the SOF Reference Manual was current as of 28 February 2015.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to identify the SOF unique educational requirements for Special Forces (SF) Officers attending the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College (USACGSC) for intermediate-level education. This question came to the forefront at the USACGSC when the U.S. Army Special Operations Command requested JPME I credit for Officers attending the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA. The purpose was to find additional opportunities to develop the SF major to meet the challenges of the changing global environment in which the SF officer would operate. The college's concern was that SF Officers would not receive the proper professional development required to prepare them for the remainder of their professional careers. By analyzing professions and identifying common denominators one can determine the essential pillars of a profession and apply those pillars to the Profession of Arms. The author's analysis identified the following pillars: a body of knowledge, corporateness/socialization, and service to a greater good. The next step was to examine history to find out when these pillars came together to form the Army's Profession of Arms. This examination showed that the Profession of Arms evolved over time. The Goldwater-Nichols Act (GNA) was the most recent evolution in the Profession of Arms. This legislation reformed the Department of Defense (DoD) and in the process created the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). This was the beginning of a Joint Profession of Arms and also a SOF Profession of Arms. The author then examined the role that the pillars of the SOF Profession of Arms have played in the SF Officer's development and found that the pillars did not prepare these officers for their entire careers. He concludes that the Army can foster a SOF Profession of Arms by taking a holistic approach to the professional development of the SF officer.

Book excerpt: A veritable bible of military science, STP 31-18-SM-TG is as the title suggests, a soldier's manual and trainer's guide for the common skills of the American Green Beret. Later in their training, US Special Forces personnel specialise in weapons, engineering, medical or intelligence and communications, but before they begin such specialised training, they need a common baseline of skills and knowledge. This Soldier Training Publication provides the framework for that baseline. Within this publication's 410 pages you'll find the skills and competencies for every baseline Special Forces activity from snakebite first aid to organising a guerrilla resistance army and everything in between. This manual is printed in easy-to-read 6 x 9, perfect-bound paperback format, not some ring-bound computer printout. Proudly printed in the USA!
