Book excerpt: Known as the “Father of the Outdoor Movement,” William HH Murray’s writings have been appreciated by generations of readers looking to nature as an escape from our daily lives as well as a portal to our past, perhaps none more so than his classic Adventures in the Wilderness: Or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks. Published in 1869 and widely hailed as the first book on recreational camping ever published in America, this groundbreaking resource informed readers how to live in the woods: what equipment to bring, where to set up camp, how to cook, fish, and hunt, and most importantly insights on the profound connections to be made between humankind and the outdoor world around us. Besides introducing readers to the great outdoors, the book would go on to lay the foundation for the conservation movement. With a Foreword by Laura Rice, the Chief Curator of the Adirondack Experience Museum, this edition of Adventures in the Wilderness revisits Murray’s timeless tips and stories of north country camping with modern-day context and clarity, showing that the profound power of nature has only grown.

Over 5,000 square miles of forests, lakes and mountains, the Adirondacks are among the most beautiful preserves in the world. The Catskills have deep gorges, great waterfalls, forested mountains, and some of the best fishing streams in the state. This guide recounts tales of the early Indians who roamed the forests, the first explorers, and the constant wars among the French and British, then the American colonists, for control of the land. But the book is mainly a guid.

Book excerpt: Deep within the Adirondack Mountains are vast, isolated tracts of wild forest where few humans have ever visited. In these primitive areas, there are no motor vehicles, no structures, and no trails. It's a primal paradise, untouched by time; a tangled wilderness, full of mystery, and for some-magic. Today we call these Wilderness Areas, but the early natives called these magic anomalies Spirit Places and by their legends and lore, we know they deliberately avoided them. But what would you do if you found a place that could transport you back in time-to watch creation, or even to live another life in a simpler time? When a modern Adirondack explorer finds one of these Spirit Places, within an ancient foundation, he is repeatedly drawn to it. During his visits he experiences historic adventures by remote viewing. Through these thrilling escapades he learns much about the local history and even more about his own. A fantastic adventure of time travel into the last frontier of America's wilderness .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rough camp-life among the Adirondacks is told with sportsmanlike gusto, interspersed with daring and adventure in remoter wilds, in older days, before the Indian had entirely disappeared from the Eastern States." -Saturday Review William Henry Harrison Murray (1840-1904), also known as Adirondack Murray, was a clergyman and author of an influential series of articles and books which popularized the Adirondacks; he became known as the father of the Outdoor Movement. Born in Guilford, Connecticut, he graduated from Yale in 1862 and then served as a minister in Greenwich, Connecticut and Meriden, Connecticut. He also served as pastor of Park Street Church in Boston from 1868 to 1874. He also delivered Sunday evening lectures about the Adirondacks in a Boston music-hall that proved highly popular, and he published a series of articles based on the lectures in a Meriden newspaper. In 1869, they were published as a book, Adventures in the Wilderness; or, Camp-Life in the Adirondacks. The literary tone of the book made it extremely successful; it went through eight printings in its first year. Murray promoted New York's north woods as health-giving and spirit-enhancing, claiming that the rustic nobility typical of Adirondack woodsmen came from their intimacy with wilderness. Although the book was to become one of the most influential books in the conservation movement of the 19th century, paradoxically, within five years it led to the building of over 200 "Great Camps" in the Adirondacks; "Murray's Fools" poured into the wilderness each weekend, packing specially scheduled railroad trains. The book is cited as changing common parlance to use "vacation" instead of the British "holiday" for people vacating their city homes. Contents I.
