Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively reviews bonding to enamel, dentin and cementum and analyses relevant adhesion mechanisms. It is addressed to both the dental researcher and the clinician. Emphasis is placed on the characterization of material interfaces with dental tissues in situ. The volume also stresses the importance of appropriate experimental protocol design in facilitating clinically-relevant research methods, clarifies the mechanisms of adhesion of polymeric materials to hard dental tissues and furnishes a handy reference for routine clinical procedures in restorative and prosthetic dentistry as well as orthodontics. The book introduces important aspects of the chemistry of dental materials and their adaptation to dental hard tissues. It also analyses interfacial phenomena occurring during application of materials, including mechanical properties, and structural-compositional alterations. The text presents the current instrumental approaches in studying related issues and a summary of the current status of theories concerning bonding to dental tissues. This work, in its scope and scientific content, provides an in-depth view of the way in which aesthetic dentistry is currently being practiced.

Book excerpt: This book presents some information regarding adhesives which have applications in industry, medicine and dentistry. The book is divided into two parts: "Adhesives Applications in Medicine and Dentistry" and "Properties of Adhesive." The aim of such a presentation is to present the usage in very different aspects of application of the adhesives and present specific properties of adhesives. Adhesives' advantageous properties and relatively uncomplicated processing methods contribute to their increasing application and their growing popularity in the industry, medicine and other branches. Some adhesives represent properties superior to those of most adhesive materials, due to their excellent adhesion and chemical resistance. A wide variety of adhesives' considerable flexibility in modification of properties of adhesives allows adjusting the composition to particular applications.

Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine whether the composite bond strength acquired using a single step self-etching bonding system is as or more effective when compared to the two step etch-rinse-bond system at clinically relevant in-vitro standards. A total of 80 extracted human deciduous with at least one intact smooth surface were collected with parental consent. Collected teeth were randomly assigned to one of four treatment protocols (n=20): single step self-etch (Adper Prompt L-Pop, 3M ESPE), two step etch (15s)-rinse-bond (Optibond Solo Plus, Kerr), single step self etch (Adper L Pop, 3M ESPE) with 30s pre-etch, and two step etch (30s)-rinse-bond (Optibond Solo Plus, Kerr). A composite cylinder of uniform shape was bonded to each tooth using the designated adhesive system and specimens were tested with a universal testing machine. Descriptive statistics and statistical analysis was performed. Median shear bond strengths for all specimens, regardless of treatment group, ranged from 3.25 MPa to 43.13 MPa. These values are above suggested minimum clinical required values of 3MPa. A Kruskal-Wallis analysis between treatment groups found statistical significance (p

Book excerpt: While adhesive techniques have already penetrated almost all fields of dentistry, a gap remains between accepted treatment modes and what is carried out in daily practice. This book, a compilation of the proceedings from the 3rd European Symposium on Adhesive Dentistry, provides the information, arguments, and data that clinicians need to incorporate adhesive dentistry into their daily practice. Leaders in the field present the rationale for adhesive techniques in esthetic restorative dentistry. Minimally invasive dentistry and specific issues faced by clinicians using adhesive techniques with ceramic and resin composite restorations are also discussed. Finally, two concluding chapters remind clinicians that they are dentists operating in a biologic system with the objective to restore patients' health.

Book excerpt: Rampant caries observed at all ages affects those teeth and tooth surfaces which usually are regarded as immune to ordinary decay. Restoration of these lesions with a strong permanent bond between dental tissues and restorative dental materials is a highly desirable property of restorative dentistry. Ultra morphological characterization shows that the interfacial morphological and bonding systems are strongly associated and thus understanding the interfacial phenomenon would be of direct relevance in the use of dental adhesives. Chemical, physiological and micro morphological differences such as decreased mineralization, small size and lower concentration of dentinal tubules, decreased permeability and more reactivity of primary dentin to acidic conditioner were thought to be responsible for lower bond strength and sealing ability in primary dentition. Despite simplification of bonding systems, technique sensitivity and substrate variability; concerns about enamel and dentin bonds have increased. In the light of these developments this study was undertaken to compare the dentin bonding agents.

The attempt of this book is to propose new possibilities and new ways of thinking about Orthodontics beside the ones presented in established and outstanding publications available elsewhere. Some of the presented chapters transmit basic information, other clinical experiences and further offer even a window to the future. In the hands of the reader this book could provide an useful tool for the exploration of the application of information, knowledge and belief to some orthodontic topics and questions.
