Book excerpt: In all the Country around there was not a Man who came up to her Plans and Specifications for a Husband. Neither was there any Man who had any time for Her. So she led a lonely Life, dreaming of the One-the Ideal. He was a big and pensive Literary Man, wearing a Prince Albert coat, a neat Derby Hat and godlike Whiskers. Book excerpt: George Ade (February 9, 1866 - May 16, 1944) was an American writer, newspaper columnist, and playwright.George Ade was born in Kentland, Indiana, one of seven children raised by John and Adaline (Bush) Ade. While attending Purdue University, he became a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. He also met and started a lifelong friendship with fellow cartoonist and Sigma Chi brother John T. McCutcheon and worked as a reporter for the Lafayette Call. He graduated in 1887.In 1890 Ade joined the Chicago Morning News, which later became the Chicago Record, where McCutcheon was working. He wrote the column, Stories of the Streets and of the Town. In the column, which McCutcheon illustrated, George Ade illustrated Chicago life. It featured characters like Artie, an office boy; Doc Horne, a gentlemanly liar; and Pink Marsh, a black shoeshine boy. Ade's well-known "fables in slang" also made their first appearance in this popular column.Ade's literary reputation rests upon his achievements as a great humorist of American character during an important era in American history: the first large wave of migration from the countryside to burgeoning cities like Chicago, where, in fact, Ade produced his best fiction. He was a practicing realist during the Age of (William Dean) Howells and a local colorist of Chicago and the Midwest. His work constitutes a vast comedy of Midwestern manners and, indeed, a comedy of late 19th-century American manners. In 1915, Sir Walter Raleigh, Oxford professor and man of letters, while on a lecture tour in America, called George Ade "the greatest living American writer."

Book excerpt: Dave Ross (1871-1943) and George Ade (1866-1944) were trustees, distinguished alumni and benefactors of Purdue University. Their friendship began in 1922 and led to their giving land and money for the 1924 construction of Ross-Ade Stadium, now a 70,000 seat athletic landmark on the West Lafayette campus. Their life stories date to 1883 Purdue and involve their separate student experiences and eventual fame. Their lives crossed paths with U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, Henry Ford, Amelia Earhart, and Will Rogers among others. Gifts or ideas from Ross or Ade led to creation of the Purdue Research Foundation, Purdue Airport, Ross Hills Park, and Ross Engineering Camp. They helped Purdue Theater, the Harlequin Club and more. Ade, renowned author and playwright, did butt heads with Purdue administrators at times long ago, but remains a revered figure. Ross's ingenious mechanical inventions of gears still steer millions of motorized vehicles, boats, tractors, even golf carts the world over.

Book excerpt: "Fables in Slang" is a collection of humorous and satirical fables written by George Ade, an American author, playwright, and humorist. Published in 1899, the book presents a unique twist on traditional fables by updating them with contemporary slang and colloquial language, resulting in witty and entertaining narratives that reflect the language and culture of the time. Each fable in the collection offers a clever and often humorous commentary on various aspects of human behavior, society, and morality. By incorporating slang and vernacular language, Ade provides a humorous take on familiar moral lessons, offering readers a fresh perspective on timeless themes. Through his fables, George Ade employs a playful and irreverent tone to highlight the foibles and quirks of human nature. He masterfully uses slang and colloquialisms to create memorable characters and scenarios that resonate with readers and elicit laughter. While the language and slang used in the fables may be rooted in a specific historical context, the underlying themes and satirical commentary remain relevant and engaging to contemporary readers. "Fables in Slang" is a testament to George Ade's skill as a humorist and his ability to infuse classic storytelling with modern language and wit. The collection invites readers to explore a world of comical and thought-provoking tales that offer both entertainment and insight into the human experience.
