Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journal of the Statistical and Social Inquiry Society of Ireland, 1866, Vol. 31 I have answered, with pleasure, the call which has been made upon me, as Vice President of your Society, to address you on the open ing of this, its nineteenth session. Unfortunately for myself, the pressure of many engagements has heretofore deprived me of the great advantage, which is con ferr d by habitual attendance at your meetings. I have rarely bee able to be present at them; and I am not, perhaps, qualified to speak of your history or appreciate your labours, as I ought. But' I do not think myself justified, on that account, in declining the responsibility you invite me to assume. Each of us should strive to do his best, according to his circumstances, in the position he has taken In the world. We are not at liberty to abstain from practical action, because we cannot lift ourselves to the level of our own ideal; and no vanity is more intolerable, than that which cloaks its morbid ness under the show of modest self-distrust. Though with a full sense of my shortcomings in an unfamiliar field, I do not hesitate to approach my appointed task; somewhat sustained by the remem brance, that I have striven to co-operate with your endeavours in the sphere of action from which I have lately passed; and that I have never ceased to sympathise with your aspirations, and admire the constitution and procedure of your Association.
