Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 4: 1851-1854 At the conclusion of Dr. Warren's paper a letter was read by the Secretary, addressed to him by Mr. E. G. Squier, corroborating Dr. Warren's view of the true character of the so called "Aztec Children," containing the following statement: - "The Commandant of the Port of La Union, in the State of San Salvador, Central America, informs me that they were born somewhere near the town of Santa Ana, in that State, of parents, one of whom certainly, if not both, was dwarfed or deformed and imbecile. The Indians residing in the vicinity of Santa Ana are civilized, and centuries ago adopted Spanish customs and the Spanish language. So far as I could discover from a few words of their ancient language which came into my possession, they belong to the Cholutecan or Chorotegan stock, which, before the conquest, extended over a part of San Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, but which was chiefly concentrated around the Gulf of Fonseca." Mr. T. T. Bouve read descriptions of a number of new species of fossil Echinoderms, from the Lower Tertiary rocks of Georgia, among others of the following: Catopygus patelliformis. Oblong-ovate, and rather pointed posteriorly. Superior face conico-convex, and forming with the inferior an acute margin. Ambulacral areas, narrow. Anus, transverse. The width of this species in proportion to the length, is as 7 to 10; height to length as 9 to 20. Description of characters from specimens in the collection of the Boston Society of Natural History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural History of Vermont: An Address Delivered at Boston, Before the Boston Society of Natural History, June, 1850 The pickerel, not delighting in the cold spring water of the highland streams, appear never to have availed themselves, as they probably mrght have done, of these facilities for inter-communication; for the species are well known to have been originally unlike on the two sides of the mountains - the &cx reticulatus being confined to the east side, and the E902: estor to the west side. The estor, it is true, is now found in Connecticut river, and is taken somewhat plentifully at Bellows Falls; but it is equally true, that he found his way there by human means, and in modern times, Pickerel were taken from the west side of the mountains and placed in a pond, on the east side, in the south part Of Windsor county, whose outlet is a tributary of the Con necticut. From this pond they descended into the Connecticut, where they have multiplied, and are now Often taken weighing several pounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 7: 1859 to 1861 A number of these chrysalids were kept, in order to ascertain if they would undergo metamorphosis, and, if so, whether the perfect insects would be healthy and vigorous; some were kept two months, at the end of which time they were accidentally lost, undergoing no change, remaining however in a perfect state of preservation and full of pulp; a number of small flies, apparently not ichneumons, which gained access to them, died almost immediately, as was supposed from having fed upon them - the empty shells of other chrysalids found about the room showed that some had been metamorphosed, as none but the arsenically-fed larvae had been admitted to the apartment. Experiments made to determine how large a quantity of arsenic might be contained in flesh without rendering it unfit for the food of these larvae, were not very satisfactory, from the hardening of the tissue by solutions of this substance preventing the deposition of the eggs; eggs developed in such tissue bring forth living worms, which in his experiments died in six or eight hours. The adult flies perished in great numbers, while depositing the eggs upon the poisoned flesh. Jaeger (quoted by Orfila, Toxicologic I. 379) alludes to the fact that larvae of flies live a little longer than the perfect insects, when arsenious acid is introduced into the digestive organs or applied to their external soft parts. Under favorable moist conditions, the larvae lived three or four days, and were evidently nearly ready to pass into the chrysalid state. Experiments with arsenic acid, used however in too concentrated a state, also showed that there is a limit to the amount of arsenic which these larvae can support. He was inclined to believe that they can eat with impunity any flesh into which arsenic has been carried by vital processes, from the fact of their being found upon the arsenicated liver, an organ capable of absorbing a very large quantity of this poison; anatomical preparations, injected thoroughly with arsenic acid, have been found completely riddled and alive with larvae. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Objects and Claims of the Boston Society of Natural History: Prepared by Direction of the Society, at the Request of the Committee of Associated Institutions of Science and Art, Jan. 1, 1861 Such I conceive to be some of the results of the establishment of this Society; and they are the legitimate and honorable results of industry and zeal well directed. They constitute as good a case, I believe, as can be made by any institution among us. The first meetings of the Society were held, and the early collections deposited, in one of the rooms of the old Athenae um Building, in Pearl Street; until, in the summer of 1833, the Society procured the rooms in the third story of the build ing of the Provident Institution for Savings, in Tremont Street. In 1845, an effort was made to obtain by subscription sufficient funds for the purchase of the building in Mason Street, for merly occupied by the Medical Department of Harvard Col lege. The effort was only partially successful at the time; but in 1847 it was renewed, and, through the liberality of the patrons of the Society, succeeded. About thirty thousand dollars were raised; and the Society, in the latter part of 1847, removed to its new building, where it met for the first time, Jan. 5, 1848, and where it now remains. In 1832, Simon E. Greene, Esq., one of the founders, bequeathed to the Society five hundred dollars, with his shells and minerals; the late Ambrose Courtis made several conditional bequests to the Society, which, by compromise, resulted in ten thousand dollars; another bequest, of three thousand dollars, was made by Hon. T. H. Perkins; John Parker bequeathed two thou sand dollars; and a recent legacy of ten thousand dollars, from the late Hon. Jonathan Phillips, has been announced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Address Delivered on the Centennial Anniversary of the Birth of Alexander Von Humboldt: Under the Auspices of the Boston Society of Natural History I AM invited to an unwonted task. Thus far I have appeared before the public only as a teacher of Natural History. To-day, for the first time in my life, I leave a field in which I am at home, to take upon myself the duties of a biographer. If I succeed at all, it will be because I so loved and honored the man whose memory brings us together. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
