Thompson: Delivered Before the New England Society of Terre Haute, Indiana, December 20, 1868 About that time, in the year 1616, there was published in London a description of New England, by Captain John Smith, who had visited it two years before, with a map of the country which some of you will recollect, as I exhibited it to you at the formation of your Pilgrim Society two years ago. This is a curious book, well worthy of perusal, not only on account of its quaint old English style, but to show what ideas then prevailed of the geographical extent of this coun try. For example, it says: New England is that part of America in the Ocean Sea opposite to Nova Albyon in the South sea; discovered by the most memorable Sir Francis Drake in his voyage about the world. In regard whereto this is styled New England, being in the same latitude. New France, off it, is N orthward. Southward is Virginia.
