From a most profound regard for age and experience, we ever feel that youth should keep silence in the presence of superior wisdom. But not confining their enquiries to the land of the Jew and the fall of the Turk - to the prospective success of Greek corruption, Romish priestcraft, or Protestant purity, they are pushing beyond and asking, What part shall America have in the picture? rather, shall we continue to be at peace and prosper as we have done, in view of the ten thousand elements which are at work, stirring up the deep waters of our pure republicanism? Mia Bay traces African-American perceptions of whites between 1830 and 1925 to depict America's shifting attitudes about race in a period that saw slavery, emancipation, Reconstruction, and urban migration. Much has been written about how the whites of this time viewed blacks, and about how blacks viewed themselves.
