Professor Beverly Jacques Anderson shares stories from her childhood and from her elementary school classmates, providing a fascinating look at the experience of growing up in the Creole culture of the Seventh Ward of New Orleans. This culture indelibly shaped the character, personality, and aspirations of Anderson and her elementary school classmates, many of whom became hard working, family-oriented, serviceoriented, productive, self-assured citizens. Creole culture in the Seventh Ward was rooted in close family ties, hard work, creativity, high expectations, independence, the Golden Rule, Catholicism, shared language/manner of speaking, and a shared sense of belonging to a unique community. Teachers, parents, and principalsall African Americansvalued education and set high standards for student achievement. According to interviews with twelve of the authors classmates, these beliefs, along with the unwavering support of parents and teachers, helped to produce competitive individuals in all walks of life. The Creole culture was also rooted in racial, ethnic, and religious segregation that affected individuals in surprising ways. Anderson also examines the history of public and Catholic education for children of color in the Seventh Ward of New Orleans and addresses the impact of the school on the community and vice versa. Explore this fascinating community and its educational history with Cherished Memories.

Among the multitude that resides within the chambers of our mind, there are a few that glimmer with an irreplaceable warmth. Among these memories, there are those that we cherish, like precious jewels nestled within the recesses of our minds. They reassure us that no matter where life may lead, we carry within us a treasure trove of cherished moments to light the way. Cherished memories have the power to uplift and inspire us, even in the darkest of times. They are sparks of light that pierce through the shadows of adversity, reminding us of the beauty, resilience and hope that exist within the human spirit. When we find ourselves facing challenges or uncertainty, it is often these cherished memories that offer solace and encouragement, serving as reminders of the strength and courage that reside within us. Furthermore, cherished memories enrich our lives with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the moments of beauty and joy that we have been fortunate enough to experience. They are imbued with the warmth of nostalgia, the sweetness of gratitude and the power of love. They remind us that life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away. Amidst the hustle and bustle of life, it’s vital to pause and honor these cherished moments, recognizing their significance and embracing their transformative power. They teach us to embrace the present, cherish the bonds we share and find solace in the beauty of life's simplest pleasures. In the grand tapestry of our existence, cherished memories are the threads that weave together a narrative of love, resilience and profound human connection, leaving an indelible imprint on our hearts and minds for eternity. Book excerpt: "You Don't Know Me" is the fascinating memoir of Stormin' Norman Seldin, the influential musician, band leader, songwriter, arranger, producer, promoter and record label owner. Norman's music career transcends the genres of rhythm & blues, doo wop, soul, jazz, rock & roll, pop and rock music and his life stories go way beyond his involvement in music. Norman began playing piano at age three and fronted his first band by the age of twelve. Norman's strong influence helped shape the emerging Asbury Park rock scene of the 1960's that became known worldwide as the Jersey Sound. As a teenage dance and concert promoter he brought together many of the early bands like the Castiles, Motifs, DuCanes, Sonny & the Starfires and Jaywalkers that produced rock luminaries like Bruce Springsteen, Vini Lopez, Doc Holiday, Billy Ryan, Mickey Holiday, Vinnie Roslin and others. Norman hired and recorded Clarence Clemons prior to Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band. In doing so, he broke the color barrier in Jersey shore clubs. In soul music, Norman discovered Harry Ray before Ray Goodman & Brown. In doo wop music, Norman managed acts like Larry Chance & the Earls and produced numerous concerts by Nicky Addeo, Vito & the Salutations, Shells, Duprees, Danny & the Juniors, Belmonts, Olympics and countless others. He recorded doo wop groups like the Darchaes, Uniques and Shondelles. This barely scratches the surface of a career that went from New Jersey to Mississippi to Florida and back. But accomplishments alone don't make for a great read. There has to be a storyline to draws readers in. While music is woven through the fabric of every paragraph, this book is not really about music. It's about one man's determination to overcome adversity while living by his own terms. Whether racing horses, surviving health crises or fighting discrimination, Norman Seldin "stormed" his way through each situation. This book is the life story of Stormin' Norman Seldin. Music is just Norman's companion. Norman found early on that in an imperfect world, real music is pure. In a world full of discord, Norman found harmony.

Winter Winter is a majestic time of the year. The trees are like sleeping giants weighted down with snow and ice. They await the warm rays of the sun to free them from their heavy load. As we look out over the land on a moonlit night, the clouds move slowly across the sky casting shadows over the glistening snow, sparkling like diamonds. Winter is a time to relax at home and reflect on the good times spent with your loved ones. Its a time to dream and make plans for the future. Winter is a burden for some, but for me its a time to slow down and enjoy the beauty of it all.

Relentless nightmares force him to relive a time in his life that was unimaginably horrible. A decade after the end of World War II and the Bobrow family's emigration to the United States, Abram's young sons, Jerry and Bill (ten and twelve years old) become aware of their father's nightly torment, and beg to know why these terrible dreams still occur. Deciding that they are finally old enough to hear this harrowing story, over the next seven days, Abram carefully details what it was like to live though one of the most terrible, tragic and darkest periods of human history. This is Abram Bobrow's true story-how he and his wife Julia, who lived through a Nazi firing squad, escaped into the vast forests of western Byelorussia, became Jewish partisan fighters and fought back against the Nazis. This is a unique story of the triumph and indomitability of the human spirit.
