Book Synopsis Reasonable Radicals and Citizenship in Botswana by : Richard Werbner
Download or read book Reasonable Radicals and Citizenship in Botswana written by Richard Werbner and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2004-07-16 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are self-interested elites the curse of liberal democracy in Africa? Is there hope against the politics of the belly, kleptocracies, vampire states, failed states, and Afro-pessimism? In Reasonable Radicals and Citizenship in Botswana, Richard Werbner examines a rare breed of powerful political elites who are not tyrants, torturers, or thieves. Werbner's focus is on the Kalanga, a minority ethnic group that has served Botswana in business and government since independence. Kalanga elites have expanded public services, advocated causes for the public good, founded organizations to build the public sphere and civil society, and forged partnerships and alliances with other ethnic groups in Botswana. Gathering evidence from presidential commissions, land tribunals, landmark court cases, and his lifetime relationship with key Kalanga elites, Werbner shows how a critical press, cosmopolitanism, entrepreneurship, accountability, and the values of patriarchy and elderhood make for an open society with strong, capable government. Werbner's work provides a refreshing alternative to those who envision no future for Africa beyond persistent agony and lack of development.
Book Synopsis Minorities in the Millennium by : Isaac Ncube Mazonde
Download or read book Minorities in the Millennium written by Isaac Ncube Mazonde and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of late, the demand for transparency as a fundamental feature of democracy has come to the very fore of public life in Botswana. Responding to this demand through very open argument, the contributors to this volume portray where the debate about tribes and minorities in Botswana lies, where it has come from, and where it is heading. The contributors illuminate a shift in public consciousness, and more broadly, point to the very general interest seen in both the politics of representation and the politics of recognition in this African democracy.

Book Synopsis Scholars in the Marketplace. The Dilemmas of Neo-Liberal Reform at Makerere University, 1989-2005 by : Mahmood Mamdani
Download or read book Scholars in the Marketplace. The Dilemmas of Neo-Liberal Reform at Makerere University, 1989-2005 written by Mahmood Mamdani and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2007-09-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars in the Marketplace is a case study of market-based reforms at Uganda's Makerere University. With the World Bank heralding neoliberal reform at Makerere as the model for the transformation of higher education in Africa, it has implications for the whole continent. At the global level, the Makerere case exemplifies the fate of public universities in a market-oriented and capital friendly era. The Makerere reform began in the 1990s and was based on the premise that higher education is more of a private than a public good. Instead of pitting the public against the private, and the state against the market, this book shifts the terms of the debate toward a third alternative than explores different relations between the two. The book distinguishes between privatisation and commercialisation, two processes that drove the Makerere reform. It argues that whereas privatisation (the entry of privately sponsored students) is compatible with a public university where priorities are publicly set, commercialisation (financial and administrative autonomy for each faculty to design a market-responsive curriculum) inevitably leads to a market determination of priorities in a public university. The book warns against commercialisation of public universities as the subversion of public institutions for private purposes.

Download or read book Surrender Or Starve written by Robert D Kaplan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Famine in the Horn is both a tool and an aspect of ethnic conflict, with the Ethiopian Amharas of the central highlands pitted against the Eritreans and Tigreans of the north. The overwhelming majority of U.S. journalists have reported on Ethiopia from one side only-that of the Amharas in Addis Ababa. The author wants to show the story from the other side, in order to redress a grievous imbalance in news coverage. To get people excited, you sometimes have to light a fire, and that was the author’s intention. This book covers the period from late 1984 to the early part of 1987. In late 1987, the famine returned, mainly for the very reasons cited inside.
