Book excerpt: Results are presented for a theoretical analysis of the performance of two-grid accelerator systems for Kaufman thrusters. Six configurations were used to cover the range of geometries which are of immediate interest. A digital ccomputer program was used to find axially symetric solutions for a single hole of each configuration. Results are presented in terms of maximum current per hole, thrust per hole (including beam divergence effects), and maximum net-to total-voltage ratio consistent with the prevention of electron backstreaming. The results presented herein should be useful in the design of accelerator systems for a variety of applications. An analysis of the effects of charge-exchange ions on the erosion rate of the accelerator grid resulted in equations which could be used to predict the expected useful lifetime of the grid. The equations seemed consistent when theoretical results were compared with experimental results for the SERT II configuration. However, when applied to the configurations used in this analysis, limitations in the usefulness of the model were found and are presented herein.

Mercury ion beams of 0.03 to 0.44 ampere were operated at net accelerating voltages of 900 to 6100 volts. A multihole screen-accelerator grid set passed the greatest percent of an ideal plane diode current with a ratio of between-grid spacing to individual hole diameter of approximately 1. Breakdown between the grids occurred at field strengths of 2000 to 3000 volts per millimeter for grid spacings of 1 to 3 millimeters. The accelerator impingement was about 1 percent and caused little erosion of the molybdenum grids, which indicated a grid life of the order of 1000 hours or better. The experimental work was conducted in a bell jar connected to a 5-foot-diameter by 16-foot-long vacuum tank at Lewis Research Center. (Author).

Book excerpt: The evaluation and understanding of maximum propellant utilization, with mercury used as the propellant are presented. The primary-electron region in the ion chamber of a bombardment thruster is analyzed at maximum utilization. The results of this analysis, as well as experimental data from a range of ion-chamber configurations, show a nearly constant loss rate for unionized propellant at maximum utilization over a wide range of total propellant flow rate. The discharge loss level of 1000 eV/ion was used as a definition of maximum utilization, but the exact level of this definition has no effect on the qualitative results and little effect on the quantitative results. There are obvious design applications for the results of this investigation, but the results are particularly significant whenever efficient throttled operation is required.
