Beginning with a primer on visual perception, cognitive science, design thinking, and modes of conception used by groups of architects in their practices, Mark Alan Hewitt surveys a 12,000-year period for specific information about the cognitive schemata used by Homo sapiens to make their buildings and habitats. The resulting history divides these modes of thinking into three large cognitive arcs: crafting, depicting, and assembling, within specific temporal frames. His analysis borrows from Merlin Donald's thesis about mimetic and symbolic cognition as critical to the emergence of the modern mind, and further employs theories of enactment and embodiment to clarify their relationship to architecture. Individual chapters treat the emergence of depiction during the Renaissance, the education of architects in the modern era, Baroque illusionism and scenography, the breakdown of artisanal literacy during the Enlightenment, and modern experiments with models, montage, and illusions of movement. The author concludes with a critique of contemporary design and education, and promotes design with embodiment as a tonic for a profession in crisis, facing the challenges of climate change, energy shortages, inequality, and housing a population of over seven billion in the coming decades. It is a significant strategy for achieving sustainability as it ensures a continuous building life cycle and prevents building destruction. Adaptive re- use projects have their own unique environment and specific challenges to ensure success. As building stock ages, more and more attention is focus on adaptive re-use projects. The aim of this paper is to explore the unique problems and critical success factors in the design brief development phase for heritage buildings. The literature review has identified incomplete information on historical buildings, lack of creativity and flexibility and lack of collaboration among project stakeholders as a unique problem. Specifically an architect with specific expertise to provide the necessary creativity in design problem solving, stakeholders who will collaborate during design decision-making processes and quality information to support problem solving are among the critical success factors for these projects. It is a highly specialised field with significant experience and knowledge domains that accumulated from past projects. Such knowledge and expertise often create intellectual capital within project teams. These teams comprises of professionals in a niche market who typically work together on subsequent projects, which makes it as important as to understand reflexive modes of management. Two projects of the same project teams are examine as case studies to explore the relevance of the concept of reflexivity. We propose a design management framework to understand how to capture, transform and accumulate social, cultural and intellectual capital within design teams that are dedicated to adaptive re-use projects towards development of a practical design management methodology grounded in theory and empirical observations. The paper describes the conceptual model and the proposed methodology for the study.

This conservation approach has become increasingly popular around the world. However, there are few publications that focus on its application in Asia. This book fills this gap by looking at both unique and shared aspects of adaptive reuse in three Asian urban centers: Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore. Building on government policy documents and extensive field work, this book contextualizes adaptive reuse in each city and reveals the impetus behind a wide range of projects from revitalization in Hong Kong, commercial development in Shanghai, to community building in Singapore. The introductory chapter sets adaptive reuse within an international perspective, noting salient differences and similarities between Asia and other parts of the world. It also anchors the discussion within a regional perspective, focusing on the similarities and differences between Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Singapore.
