Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adaptive statistical tests, developed over the last 30 years, are often more powerful than traditional tests of significance, but have not been widely used. To date, discussions of adaptive statistical methods have been scattered across the literature and generally do not include the computer programs necessary to make these adaptive methods a practical alternative to traditional statistical methods. Until recently, there has also not been a general approach to tests of significance and confidence intervals that could easily be applied in practice. Modern adaptive methods are more general than earlier methods and sufficient software has been developed to make adaptive tests easy to use for many real-world problems. Applied Adaptive Statistical Methods: Tests of Significance and Confidence Intervals introduces many of the practical adaptive statistical methods developed over the last 10 years and provides a comprehensive approach to tests of significance and confidence intervals. It shows how to make confidence intervals shorter and how to make tests of significance more powerful by using the data itself to select the most appropriate procedure.

Book excerpt: Professor Puri is one of the most versatile and prolific researchers in the world in mathematical statistics. His research areas include nonparametric statistics, order statistics, limit theory under mixing, time series, splines, tests of normality, generalized inverses of matrices and related topics, stochastic processes, statistics of directional data, random sets, and fuzzy sets and fuzzy measures. His fundamental contributions in developing new rank-based methods and precise evaluation of the standard procedures, asymptotic expansions of distributions of rank statistics, as well as large deviation results concerning them, span such areas as analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, multivariate analysis, and time series, to mention a few. His in-depth analysis has resulted in pioneering research contributions to prominent journals that have substantial impact on current research. This book together with the other two volumes (Volume 2: Probability Theory and Extreme Value Theory; Volume 3: Time Series, Fuzzy Analysis and Miscellaneous Topics), are a concerted effort to make his research works easily available to the research community. The sheer volume of the research output by him and his collaborators, coupled with the broad spectrum of the subject matters investigated, and the great number of outlets where the papers were published, attach special significance in making these works easily accessible. The papers selected for inclusion in this work have been classified into three volumes each consisting of several parts. All three volumes carry a final part consisting of the contents of the other two, as well as the complete list of Professor Puri's publications.

Book excerpt: The Fifth Purdue International Symposium on Statistical Decision The was held at Purdue University during the period of ory and Related Topics June 14-19,1992. The symposium brought together many prominent leaders and younger researchers in statistical decision theory and related areas. The format of the Fifth Symposium was different from the previous symposia in that in addition to the 54 invited papers, there were 81 papers presented in contributed paper sessions. Of the 54 invited papers presented at the sym posium, 42 are collected in this volume. The papers are grouped into a total of six parts: Part 1 - Retrospective on Wald's Decision Theory and Sequential Analysis; Part 2 - Asymptotics and Nonparametrics; Part 3 - Bayesian Analysis; Part 4 - Decision Theory and Selection Procedures; Part 5 - Probability and Probabilistic Structures; and Part 6 - Sequential, Adaptive, and Filtering Problems. While many of the papers in the volume give the latest theoretical developments in these areas, a large number are either applied or creative review papers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains selected and refereed contributions to the "Inter national Symposium on Probability and Bayesian Statistics" which was orga nized to celebrate the 80th birthday of Professor Bruno de Finetti at his birthplace Innsbruck in Austria. Since Professor de Finetti died in 1985 the symposium was dedicated to the memory of Bruno de Finetti and took place at Igls near Innsbruck from 23 to 26 September 1986. Some of the pa pers are published especially by the relationship to Bruno de Finetti's scientific work. The evolution of stochastics shows growing importance of probability as coherent assessment of numerical values as degrees of believe in certain events. This is the basis for Bayesian inference in the sense of modern statistics. The contributions in this volume cover a broad spectrum ranging from foundations of probability across psychological aspects of formulating sub jective probability statements, abstract measure theoretical considerations, contributions to theoretical statistics and stochastic processes, to real applications in economics, reliability and hydrology. Also the question is raised if it is necessary to develop new techniques to model and analyze fuzzy observations in samples. The articles are arranged in alphabetical order according to the family name of the first author of each paper to avoid a hierarchical ordering of importance of the different topics. Readers interested in special topics can use the index at the end of the book as guide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An expert introduction to stage-wise adaptive designs in all areas of statistics Stage-Wise Adaptive Designs presents the theory and methodology of stage-wise adaptive design across various areas of study within the field of statistics, from sampling surveys and time series analysis to generalized linear models and decision theory. Providing the necessary background material along with illustrative S-PLUS functions, this book serves as a valuable introduction to the problems of adaptive designs. The author begins with a cohesive introduction to the subject and goes on to concentrate on generalized linear models, followed by stage-wise sampling procedures in sampling surveys. Adaptive forecasting in the area of time series analysis is presented in detail, and two chapters are devoted to applications in clinical trials. Bandits problems are also given a thorough treatment along with sequential detection of change-points, sequential applications in industrial statistics, and software reliability. S-Plus functions are available to accompany particular computations, and all examples can be worked out using R, which is available on the book's related FTP site. In addition, a detailed appendix outlines the use of these software functions, while an extensive bibliography directs readers to further research on the subject matter. Assuming only a basic background in statistical topics, Stage-Wise Adaptive Designs is an excellent supplement to statistics courses at the upper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the fields of statistics and biostatistics.

Book excerpt: This volume is based on the invited and the contributed presentations given at the Indo-U.S. Workshop on Bayesian Analysis in Statistics and Econometrics (BASE), Dec. 19-23, 1988, held at the Hotel Taj Residency, Bangalore, India. The workshop was jointly sponsored by The Ohio State University, The Indian Statistical Institute, The Indian Econometrics So ciety, U.S. National Science Foundation and the NSF-NBER Seminar on Bayesian Inference in Econometrics. Profs. Morrie DeGroot, Prem Goel, and Arnold Zellner were the program organizers. Unfortunately, Morrie became seriously ill just before the workshop was to start and could not participate in the workshop. Almost a year later, Morrie passed away after fighting valiantly with the illness. Not to find Morrie among ourselves was a shock for most of us. He was a continuous source of inspiration and ideas. Even while Morrie was fighting for his life, we had a lot of discussions about the contents of this volume and the Bangalore Workshop. He even talked about organizing a Second Indo-U.S. workshop some time in the near future. We are dedicating this volume to the memory of Prof. Morris H. DeGroot. We have taken a conscious decision not to include any biography of Morrie in this volume. An excellent biography of Morrie has appeared in Statistical Science [(1991), vol. 6, 1-14], and we could not have done a better job than that.

Puri, the authors of this Festschrift pay their tribute to his scientific achievements in statistics. This volume reflects a selective survey of leading contemprary scientific trends and developments that are significantly related to ideas expressed and pursued in Madan L. Puri's work in statistics and related fields. The wide spectrum of scientific interest which characterizes Professor Puri's scientific activity is thus illuminated. The choice of papers offered combines fundamental principles with interesting applications, selected for their originality and insight, and for their influence on the modern approach to statistics, probability and related fields.
