Frequency domain adaptive filtering was seen to be superior to the LMS time domain algorithm because its much greater computational efficiency allowed the analysis of much longer filters. A digital filter that exploits the engine noise by having a notch at each harmonic was seen to be more effective than any of the adaptive filters. The digital filter equations are derived, starting with a particular periodic reference input. This adaptive filter is shown to be, in reality, an infinite impulse response, time invariant filter. Often in order to compensate for the noise in acoustic environments a passive approach is taken, in which sound absorption and isolation techniques are implemented throughout the physical space. Although this passive approach can provide suitable levels of noise reduction for a reasonable range of frequencies, several active noise control approaches are proven to be more effective, especially at frequencies below 500 Hz. Active Noise Control utilizes adaptive filtering algorithms to achieve significant noise attenuation of lower frequency noise that significantly degrades the desired audio signal. The level of effectiveness of various adaptive filtering algorithms can determine the overall noise attenuation and the rate at which the system attenuates the noise in the given space. Noise source location, level, and resonant space may dictate the amount of degradation caused on the input signal. Some acoustic spaces in which Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) headsets are used causes increasing resonance and inconsistent changes in noise power and amplitude. Special consideration of these signal characteristics are used to determine the stationary level of the noise signal, which is an ideal measure for determination of an adaptive filtering algorithm. Most Active Noise Control systems currently utilize only versions of the Least Mean Square adaptive filtering algorithm. This research will focus on a selective algorithm that will utilize descriptors to identify differences in the noise signal, and determine an optimal algorithm to be used for the filtering of distinct portions of the signal that are identified. The Recursive Least Squares adaptive algorithm will be used as the primary means of filtering due to its fast rate of convergence and tracking performance. A selective switching mechanism will be used to insure the Least Mean Squares algorithm is initiated only when signal conditions dictate effective noise control can be performed using this algorithm. Several different noise source environments are tested in order to attain the best active noise control solution to be used.

Book excerpt: Advanced signal enhancement techniques with application to speech and hearing are presented that are applied to areas including adaptive noise cancellation (ANC) in noisy speech signals, single channel noise reduction for speech enhancement, voice activity detection (VAD) and noise reduction in binaural hearing aids. The performance enhancement of the new techniques over competing approaches is presented. For the domains of ANC and single channel noise reduction, the use of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) is the underpinning technique employed. A novel approach to dual-channel speech enhancement using Adaptive Empirical Mode Decomposition (SEAEMD) is also presented, when a noise reference is available. The new SEAEMD system incorporates the multi-resolution approach EMD with ANC for effective speech enhancement in stationary and non-stationary noise environments. Two novel Empirical Mode Decomposition based filtering (EMDF) algorithms are presented for single channel speech enhancement. The first system is designed to be particularly effective in low frequency noise environments. The second generalized EMDF system is designed to operate under other noisy conditions, with results presented for babble noise, military vehicle noise and car interior noise. It is shown that the proposed EMDF techniques enhance the speech more effectively than current speech enhancement approaches that use effective noise estimation routines. Speech systems such as hearing aids require fast and computationally inexpensive signal processing technologies. A new and computationally efficient 1-dimensional local binary pattern (1-D LBP) signal processing procedure is designed and applied to (i) signal segmentation and (ii) the VAD problem. Both applications use the underlying features extracted from the 1-D LBP. The simplicity and low computational complexity of 1-D LBP processing are demonstrated. A novel binaural noise reduction system is presented for steering the focus direction of a hearing aid (2 microphones per hearing aid) to additional directions as well as 0/180 degrees. The system places a spatial null in the direction of the target speaker to obtain a noise estimate. The noisy speech signal is then filtered to perform noise reduction, and thus focus on the target speaker located at the desired direction. The results demonstrate its performance at attenuating multiple directional interferers.

The purpose of the explanation and simulation of the Filtered-X LMS FIR adaptive filter in MATLAB is to demonstrate active noise cancellation in software. This background research of algorithms and code development will be used for the eventual integration with a DSP processor or microcontroller that allows for the augmentation of a standard pair of Sennheiser PX100-II headphones, that do not provide noise isolation or cancellation, into headphones that can cancel unwanted noise. The headphones will then be used with an Amateur Ham Radio in an environment with unwanted, high decibel sound. This thesis supports the proof of concept through software simulation and a report of different methods of hardware integration. The research and development of digital signal processing techniques and hardware integration will lead to the augmentation of a pair of headphones used for communication in a noisy environment.

Specifically, the ambient environment is generalized to include the case where an acoustic barrier exists between the primary and reference microphones. By updating the coefficients of the noise estimation filter only during silence, it is shown that the ANC technique can provide substantial noise reduction with little speech distortion even when the acoustic barrier provides only moderate attenuation of acoustic signals. The use of the modified ANC method is evaluated using an oxygen facemask worn by fighter aircraft pilots. Experiments demonstrate that if a noise field is created using a single source, 11 dB signal-to-noise ratio improvement can be achieved by attaching the reference microphone to the exterior of the facemask. The length of the ANC filter required for this particular environment is only about 50 points long.
