Book excerpt: The effects of aquatic invasive species (AIS) on ecosystem function and biodiversity are a major concern in the Great Lakes basin, which has been influenced by at least 188 nonindigenous species. In Lake Michigan, lower Green Bay and the Fox River are considered high-risk for species introductions as they may serve as potential vectors between the Great Lakes and inland ecosystems. The Fox River Navigational System Authority (FRNSA) manages 17 locks in the Fox River; and initiated AIS monitoring effort in 2006. University of Wisconsin Green Bay (UWGB) has continued monitoring since 2019. The goal of UWGB AIS sampling is to monitor the presence and assess the distribution of communities in the lower Fox River. In Unit 1, presented are the results of 2022 and 2023 sampling. The findings of this effort necessitated the expansion of monitoring to include early detection surveys in a potential invasion front in this system, Lake Winnebago. UWGB AIS monitoring resulted in WDNR confirmation of the first live spiny waterflea detection in Lake Winnebago. Monitoring systems for AIS require constant adaptation of methods and detection goals as species distributions change. The apparent spread of non-native species has prompted UWGB development of a conceptual plan. Presented in Unit 2, the strategic framework contains species watchlists and methods for an adaptive system wide aquatic invasive species action plan. Through review of early detection management, strategic plans, techniques, protocols, and incorporation of current management, the purpose is to increase accessibility for coordination of future management efforts in the region.

Over the years, heavy use of the river has negatively affected water quality and the overall health of the system. Unhealthy rivers cannot function properly. Biological assessment based on animal surveys are often used to determine river health. I used data from the Lawrence University and Fox River Navigational System Authority invasive species-monitoring project to explore how the distribution of animals in the Fox River has changed over time and across locations. Monitoring surveys have taken place between June and August at six sites along the river from 2006 to 2014. The field data consist of a combination of presence-absence and abundance data for zooplankton, benthic invertebrate, and fish populations. There are clear trends in the community composition of animals in the river over time and across locations. Compositions of fish populations of a given site remained similar across time but varied among sites. In contrast, compositions of benthic invertebrate and zooplankton populations in a given year were fairly similar across sites but varied among years. This study provides important ecological data that can be used when making future decisions affecting the health of the river.
