Book Synopsis Design and Evaluation of a Device for Determining the One-dimensional Compression Characteristics of Soils Subjected to Impulse-type Loads by : Larry Schindler
Download or read book Design and Evaluation of a Device for Determining the One-dimensional Compression Characteristics of Soils Subjected to Impulse-type Loads written by Larry Schindler and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A general-purpose test facility for determining the one-dimensional compression characteristics of soils subjected to impulse-type loads has been developed in order to help satisfy the ever-increasing demand for reliable soil-property data required in support of a wide variety of nuclear-weapons-effects-related problems. The design, fabrication, installation, and evaluation of the various elements which together comprise the test facility were accomplished. The various considerations involved in the design and evaluation of the newly developed test facility are discussed in detail, thus providing some insight into the types of factors which affect the experimental-accuracy capability of a one-dimensional compression test facility and thereby the reliability of the data obtained under any particular set of conditions. Book excerpt: Dilatational waves of ultrasonic frequency are produced in a laboratory specimen of soil by energizing a barium titanate crystal, and the resultant waves picked up by a second crystal. The transit time of the wave front is observed by displaying input and output signals on an oscil loscope. Wave velocity as a function of confining pressure was measured for Ottawa sand and for glass beads. The velocity varied somewhat with specimen thickness, apparently because of dis persion of very high frequency portions of the wave front. The measured velocity varied approxi mately as the 1/4 to 1/5th power of the confining pressure, and agreed very closely with the values calculated from Brandt's equations. The measured velocities were reasonably consistent with the rod and shear wave velocities reported by Richart. (Author).

Book Synopsis Stress-strain-time Behavior of Soil in One Dimensional Compression by : Robert V. Whitman
Download or read book Stress-strain-time Behavior of Soil in One Dimensional Compression written by Robert V. Whitman and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ground motion prediction formulas based upon elastic wave propagation in one-dimension (no strain transverse to the propagation direction) have been used widely in protective construction work. Actual soil materials exhibit many deviations from elastic behavior. This report assesses the probable influence of these non-elastic effects upon the accuracy of the above-mentioned prediction formulas, and upon the question of stress attenuation with depth. Three different models of soil behavior are assumed: a standard 3-element visco-elastic model (spring in series with spring-dashpot combination); a compacting model (straight line loading and unloading curves); and an ''elastic'' model in which any arbitrary shape may be assigned to the loading stress-strain curve. This report deals primarily with the first of these three models; the possible significance and probable importance of the third model are discussed briefly. By combining the theoretical and experimental results, it is shown that the elastic ground motion prediction formulas are generally valid (for cases where it is appropriate to think of one-dimensional motion); i.e. the possible effects of viscosity and inelasticity are no greater than uncertainties as to the order of magnitude of the compressibility of an in situ soil mass. This book was released on 1963 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains a critical review of the literature on the dynamic testing of soils. The review was conducted prior to the design of an apparatus for dynamic direct shear tests. The specifications for the apparatus generated from this review and the preliminary design of the apparatus are presented. Included are appendixes containing annotated bibliographies (421 entries) on soil dynamics, stress-wave propagation, and nuclear and high-explosive cratering. (Author).
