Download or read book For Adam's Sake written by Allegra Di Bonaventura and published by Liveright. This book was released on 2013-04-02 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the New England Historical Association’s James P. Hanlan Book Award Winner the Association for the Study of Connecticut History’s Homer D. Babbidge Jr. Award “Incomparably vivid . . . as enthralling a portrait of family life [in colonial New England] as we are likely to have.”—Wall Street Journal In the tradition of Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s classic, A Midwife’s Tale, comes this groundbreaking narrative by one of America’s most promising colonial historians. Joshua Hempstead was a well-respected farmer and tradesman in New London, Connecticut. As his remarkable diary—kept from 1711 until 1758—reveals, he was also a slave owner who owned Adam Jackson for over thirty years. In this engrossing narrative of family life and the slave experience in the colonial North, Allegra di Bonaventura describes the complexity of this master/slave relationship and traces the intertwining stories of two families until the eve of the Revolution. Slavery is often left out of our collective memory of New England’s history, but it was hugely impactful on the central unit of colonial life: the family. In every corner, the lines between slavery and freedom were blurred as families across the social spectrum fought to survive. In this enlightening study, a new portrait of an era emerges.
Download or read book Certitude written by Adam Begley and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2009-05-12 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes all we have is the courage of our convictions. But not all convictions are created equal. In fact, some are downright delusional. And once a foolish notion sinks its teeth into the famous or the powerful, look out–the impact can have profound consequences for the rest of us. So it’s nothing short of gratifying when our most bullheaded and self-righteous leading lights insist on getting their way only to be proven egregiously embarrassingly wrong. From politicians to pontiffs, movie stars to moguls, and artists to inventors, Certitude presents short biographical sketches of notoriously stubborn individuals who were certain they were right–with laughable, disturbing, and often disastrous results. Earning a place among the greatest historical and contemporary bullheads are: •Girolamo Savonarola, the Dominican friar who failed to place his own vanities on the bonfire. •Carry A. Nation, the saloon smasher who didn’t have a temperate bone in her teetotaling body. •Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes series, who lacked the deductive reasoning he bestowed on his own creation. •Joseph Stalin, the hard-line Soviet leader who had a soft spot after all. •Madonna, the queen of pop, who isn’t just a material girl: She’s embraced Kabbalah and the doctrine of reincarnation–in other words, she’ll be back! Informative, irreverent, and brilliantly illustrated by the caricaturist Edward Sorel, Certitude is a book for our time.

Book excerpt: 'I have quite fallen for Adam -- his stylish waistcoat, encyclopaedic knowledge and use for everything -- and constantly find myself thinking "What Would Adam Do?" as I go about my daily gardening business.' Alys Fowler In the 1940s, Adam the Gardener was a national treasure. Each week in the Sunday Express he advised gardeners exactly what to plant and how - from carrots in the fourth week of May (but 'do this after sunset, when there is less chance of trouble from the carrot fly') to lily of the valley in the fourth week of November. Accompanied by wonderful illustrations, Adam's charm and expertise won over thousands. Here, the weekly world of Adam the Gardener has been brought back to life for today's gardener, who will be just as readily captivated by his quiet reliability and peerless knowledge. As well as techniques - pruning and potting, forcing and grafting - and planting instructions for an impressive range of flowers, fruits and vegetables, also learn how to plan a new garden, what gadgets you will need (including an earwig trap) and all about colour harmony in the garden. This is a period gem that will delight and inform enthusiasts of all kinds.

Book Synopsis Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology by : Henry E. Adams
Download or read book Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology written by Henry E. Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 1281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Comprehensive Handbook of Psychopathology was published in 1984, al most a decade ago. In the interim there has been an explosion of information in psychopathology. Proliferation of knowledge has included a widening base of research data and changing or new concepts and theories regarding classification, measurement methods, and etiology of abnormal behaviors and mental disorders. It has been an active and productive period for biological and behavioral scientists and clinicians, particularly in terms of changing notions of the complex interaction of environmental and biological factors in many disorders. For example, with the classic disorders-such as anxiety and dissociative disorders-our understanding, while far from perfect, has been greatly enhanced in recent years. Whereas there was almost a vacuum of empirical knowledge ten years ago about the personality disorders, concentrated efforts have been undertaken to investigate classification, comorbidities, and expression of the personality disorders, and variants in normal personality traits. In addition, scientific advances in the fields of behavioral medicine, health psychology, and neuropsychology have greatly contributed to our knowledge of psychopathology and the interplay of psychobiological factors. It is now commonly acknowledged that psychopathology is not limited to the traditional mental illness categories; it also plays a significant role in many physical illnesses, such as cancer and AIDS. With these developments, it became clear that the first edition of this handbook was outdated and that a revision was needed.

Download or read book Household Gods written by Sara Georgini and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-16 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflecting on his past, President John Adams mused that it was religion that had shaped his family's fortunes and young America's future. For the nineteenth century's first family, the Adamses of Massachusetts, the history of how they lived religion was dynamic and well-documented. Christianity supplied the language that Abigail used to interpret husband John's political setbacks. Scripture armed their son John Quincy to act as father, statesman, and antislavery advocate. Unitarianism gave Abigail's Victorian grandson, Charles Francis, the religious confidence to persevere in political battles on the Civil War homefront. By contrast, his son Henry found religion hollow and repellent compared to the purity of modern science. A renewal of faith led Abigail's great-grandson Brooks, a Gilded Age critic of capitalism, to prophesy two world wars. Globetrotters who chronicled their religious journeys extensively, the Adamses ultimately developed a cosmopolitan Christianity that blended discovery and criticism, faith and doubt. Drawing from their rich archive, Sara Georgini, series editor for The Papers of John Adams, demonstrates how pivotal Christianity--as the different generations understood it--was in shaping the family's decisions, great and small. Spanning three centuries of faith from Puritan New England to the Jazz Age, Household Gods tells a new story of American religion, as the Adams family lived it.
