Research has demonstrated that exercise-induced changes in appetite can be affected by ambient temperature. Furthermore, exercise intensity has also been shown to affect appetite and post-exercise caloric intake. The aim of this thesis was to investigate the impact of exercise at different ambient temperatures on appetite and energy intake (EI) in overweight and obese individuals. Furthermore, this thesis also aimed to examine the effects of high intensity exercise on both peripheral and central appetite regulation in lean healthy males. The findings from this thesis demonstrated that exercise in a cold environment (8°C) stimulated post-exercise EI in overweight and obese men and women compared with exercise in a neutral environment (20°C). Exercise in the heat (32°C) caused an increase in desire to eat 5 hours post-exercise compared with rest in the heat in overweight and obese individuals, however no further differences in appetite sensations were observed between trials. Findings from this thesis have also demonstrated that an acute bout of intense running suppressed neural activation within the orbitofrontal cortex and hippocampus in response to images of high-calorie foods compared with rest. Furthermore, pictures of low-calorie foods enhanced activation within the insula and putamen post-exercise compared with rest. These central regions are associated with regulating the rewarding properties of food, therefore these findings showed that high intensity exercise is capable of suppressing the rewarding properties of high-calorie foods whilst enhancing the rewarding properties of low-calorie foods immediately post-exercise. However, an acute bout of intense running enhanced central reward system activation in response to food cues compared with rest several hours after exercise. Therefore, the appetite suppressing effects of an acute bout of high intensity exercise could be short-lived.

In the past, this was primarily attributed to the direct contribution of exercise to energy expenditure, however it is becoming increasingly evident that exercise may also influence appetite and energy intake. Importantly, the precise effect of exercise on appetite and energy intake appears to be influenced by specific characteristics of the exercise. In particular, high-intensity exercise appears to have beneficial (anorexic) effects on appetite and energy intake. Prolonged and continuous high-intensity exercise may however, not be tolerable and sustainable in an inactive and overweight population. An alternative may be the use of high-intensity, intermittent exercise that involves short bouts of high-intensity exercise interspersed with periods of exercise at lower intensities. However, the effects of high-intensity, intermittent exercise on energy intake and appetite regulation is not known. The research presented in this thesis examines the acute and longer term influence of high-intensity, intermittent exercise compared with traditional moderate-intensity, continuous exercise on subsequent energy intake, perceptions of appetite and appetite-related blood variables in sedentary, overweight men.

METHODS: Fifteen highly-trained women (18-40y, 58.4±6.4kg, VO2MAX=55.2±4.3 mL/kg/min) completed isocaloric bouts of moderate intensity exercise (MIE) at 60%VO2MAX, and 2) and high- intensity exercise (HIE) at 85%VO2MAX in randomly assigned order. In both trials, subjects ran on a treadmill until an energy expenditure (EE) of 500 kcal was achieved. Blood was drawn pre-exercise (baseline), immediately post-exercise and every 20-min for the next 60-min. Plasma concentrations of acylated ghrelin, PYY3−36, GLP-1 and subjective appetite ratings via visual analog scale (VAS) were assessed at these same time points. Food intake and physical activity were recorded 48-h before each trial. A mixed model analysis was used to examine the impact of exercise intensity (60% vs. 85% VO2max) on appetite- regulatory hormones and VAS responses over time. Where significant effects were found, post-hoc analyses were performed using the Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. For these same variables area under the curve (AUC) was calculated using the trapezoid method to determine total response over time. The overall statistical significance was accepted at the 5% level. RESULTS: Results for appetite hormones showed no main effect for exercise intensity or interactive effects, but a significant main effect for time; thus, data were combined across exercise intensities for each time point. Results: Post-exercise prebiotic supplementation increased measures of satiety and decreased EI the day following exercise. Fasting temporarily increased post-exercise hunger, but did not modify EI. Such programs suffer of a low adherence and high drop-out due to the difficulties met by patients to concomitantly support exercise and energy restriction. Physical exercise has been proposed as a potential indirect energy intake modulator, which could be interesting in terms of obesity treatment. The impact of exercise on subsequent energy balance (intake and expenditure) and appetite has been mainly questioned among lean adults but few data are available in obese populations, particularly pediatrics. The first aim of this work was then to determine whether or not an acute bout of exercise could affect subsequent energy balance and appetite in obese adolescents (STUDY I). Then the importance of the prescribed exercise intensity (Low vs High intensity) on those energy balance and appetite modifications has been investigated (STUDY II). The results demonstrate that an intensive exercise (>70%VO2max) realized by the end of the morning favors a reduced energy balance by mainly decreasing energy intake. The induced energy intake decrease was observed within minutes after the exercise (30 minutes, lunch time), with the onset being experienced about 7 hours after, during dinner time. Data remain however contradictive concerning the post exercise macronutrient intake, and further investigations are required. No gender difference was observed in terms of post exercise energy balance and appetite adaptations. The observed energy intake adaptations were not accompanied by appetite sensation modifications, suggesting that obese adolescents are not at risk for food frustration. Within 24-h, obese adolescents' energy balance can be reduced thanks to both elevated energy expenditure and decreased energy intake when an intensive exercise is performed by the end of the morning. Such results need to be questioned as part of chronic interventions to know whether or not intensive exercise can provide a great tool to induced long term energy balance reduction (by dually affecting energy expenditure and intake) and then weight loss.

Fourteen participants completed two conditions in a randomized crossover trial: 1) 75 min exercise (75% VO2peak); and 2) 75 min sedentary control. Measures of energy intake, energy expenditure, subjective appetite, and appetite-related hormones were assessed. An acute post-exercise suppression of acyl-ghrelin was observed. Exercise increased overall measures of subjective appetite despite no increase in energy intake or change in post-exercise physical activity patterns. Overall, exercise increased perceived appetite despite no clear evidence of energy compensation through energy intake or energy expenditure.
