Book excerpt: The Chinese acupuncturists use needles to treat at least one hundred fifty kind diseases with successes for thousands of years on more than one billion people with remarkable success. But it has not been accepted by the main stream Western medicine, and taught in main stream medical school. Probably it is due to two factors: theoretically it has not been explained by modern science, and second there is no quantitative objective evidence for it. This book answers these two questions. It provides modern scientific explanation to important concepts, especially meridians and qi. What are meridians made up of? What are acupoints? What is qi? Can they be seen? This book presents copious pictures taken by infrared images method. They provide the objective evidence how acupuncture works, what are meridians made up of, and what is the measurable effect of qi. Each thermograph has more than ten thousand pixels. Each pixel is associated with one temperature to the accuracy of 0.1 0 C. So the science of acupuncture becomes a quantitative science with enormous accurate numbers as supporting evidence. This book contains twenty nine easy to read articles, which cover many important topics in acupuncture and Chinese medicine. Each essay has at least one infrared image, So the reader can see the images for himself, and understand that there are incredible accurate data supporting acupuncture and Chinese medicine.

Book excerpt: The evolution of technological advances in infrared sensor technology, image processing, "smart" algorithms, knowledge-based databases, and their overall system integration has resulted in new methods of research and use in medical infrared imaging. The development of infrared cameras with focal plane arrays no longer requiring cooling, added a new dimension to this modality. Medical Infrared Imaging: Principles and Practices covers new ideas, concepts, and technologies along with historical background and clinical applications. The book begins by exploring worldwide advances in the medical applications of thermal imaging systems. It covers technology and hardware including detectors, detector materials, un-cooled focal plane arrays, high performance systems, camera characterization, electronics for on-chip image processing, optics, and cost-reduction designs. It then discusses the physiological basis of the thermal signature and its interpretation in a medical setting. The book also covers novel and emerging techniques, the complexities and importance of protocols for effective and reproducible results, storage and retrieval of thermal images, and ethical obligations. Of interest to both the medical and biomedical engineering communities, the book explores many opportunities for developing and conducting multidisciplinary research in many areas of medical infrared imaging. These range from clinical quantification to intelligent image processing for enhancement of the interpretation of images, and for further development of user-friendly high-resolution thermal cameras. These would enable the wide use of infrared imaging as a viable, noninvasive, low-cost, first-line detection modality.

Book excerpt: With thousands of years history and your own experience in using or benefiting from meridian-based medical practices, you many not feel that you need physical proof of the existence of meridian lines and points. However, it is the lack of visual proof that has kept the Western health community, including the insurance companies, from fully accepting the practices of the East like acupuncture and acupressure. Those who understand meridian theory know that it is not just the ability to help heal that is important in Eastern practice, but the focus on health maintenance through maintaining the flow of energy throughout the body. There are many people trying to establish the proof of meridian theory and this book contributes to this goal by presenting a sample of the work of Dr. Shui Yin Lo, who uses infrared photography in his research and has discovered its ability to reveal easily the 14 major meridians in Eastern meridian theory. We all know that we need a more efficient and cost effect approach to medical care and this book will provide a major steppingstone towards that goal.

Leading acupuncturists and researchers with international reputations share their expertise. They illustrate their descriptions with practical examples of what has worked and what has not. It outlines many of the key challenges in the field. These challenges relate to the nature of acupuncture and the gap between current research evidence and the actual experiences of acupuncturists in the field. By focusing the chapters on key research questions, rather than methods, the book has a user-friendly feel. Each chapter is easily accessible with brief explanations of research designs as well as vignettes of relevant past research. The book is based on a deep understanding of acupuncture, with its inherent complexity in practice, whether based on traditional principles or more modern concepts. By incorporating a more sophisticated understanding of the field, this book details a range of strategies aiming to develop the evidence base with the utmost rigour. It is the first book on acupuncture research to take this unique view, integrating the very best of evidence-based medicine with a genuine sensitivity to the discipline of acupuncture, from its traditional and holistic roots to its more modern interpretations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mystery is solved! The actual location, composition, and morphology of the mysterious TCM triple energizer (San Jiao) organ will surprise you. Numerous recent scientific research findings confirm ancient TCM philosophy was eons ahead of its time. This book discusses newly discovered organ systems (Primo Vascular System, the gut microbiome, the omnipresent neuromyofascial metasystem, endocrine function of fat) and how they affect the Triple Energizer. This book elucidates the actual location, composition, and morphology of the Triple Energizer as expressed by modern scientific discovery, and evidence is presented to show how the Triple Energizer functions and why it has remained hidden all this time. Those who believe that the Triple Burner has a name but no form will be truly amazed as to its actual location and its actual form. Numerous other practical TCM concepts are discussed. A blastocyst grown on a petri dish in 1977 resulted in the very first IVF baby, Louise Brown. Commenting on the Nan Ching, Yeh Lin described the blastocyst when he said, It is the utensil that stores and transforms the essence, and it is the place to which the womb, which conceives the embryo, is tied. Thus, it is the origin of mans life. Hence, it is called gate of life. Commenting on Nan Ching, Y Shu said, The spleen takes in the five tastes. It transforms them to produce the five influences . . . and to make flesh and skin grow. Since about 2005, researchers have been astonished to find scent receptors and the five known taste sensors throughout the body smelling and tasting things deep inside of us. These taste and odor receptors have been found in the kidneys, stomach, intestines, pancreas, lungs, brain, spine, bladder, sinuses, muscle tissue, and even the anus. Bitter taste receptors have been found in sperm. Researchers believe these receptors are distributed throughout the entire vascular system. As the Heart controls the blood vessels in TCM, it makes perfect sense that the Heart masters the odors, exactly as ancient TCM scholars state.
