Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate and assess elementary, middle high, and high school teachers' perception of their principal's leadership ability. A survey was used to gather information from certified teachers of South Carolina, North Carolina, and Louisiana. the data collected from the questions used in the survey were analyzed to determine if there was statistical significant difference between the teacher perceptions of an effective principal in the elementary, middle high, and high schools. the four variables tested were skills of principal interests: problem solving and decision-making, leadership, staff development and motivation. the researcher hypothesized that there would be no significant differences in the perception of a principal's leadership at these schools. A descriptive quantitative research methodology was used to assess this study. Data were analyzed using MANOVA Test. For each variable there were significant differences in the teachers perceptions between the groups. There were no significant differences between the middle and high school teachers.

Book excerpt: This book is a manual on how to become a streetwise and savvy principal. These leaders do things very differently from other principals and what they do that distinguishes them is not found in studies on effective principals. There are two reasons for this: 1.) researchers aren't asking the right questions and 2.) even if researchers were asking the right questions, principals would be reluctant to reveal their responses because of the controversial nature. This book provides specific and candid suggestions and ideas for becoming a standout leader. It recommends actions and strategies to positively influence others behavior. It also suggests tactics and actions to avoid. Because, in reality, if principals are successful: students, teachers, schools and superintendents will benefit. And if this is the case; it naturally follows that school boards, parents and communities will be proud and pleased with what is happening in their schools. Everyone wins when the principal is successful.

Book excerpt: Principals navigate the dynamic complexities and subtleties of their schools every day. They promote, facilitate, and lead efforts to achieve both tangible and intangible results throughout the school community. They fulfill a role that includes counseling, budgeting, inspiring, teaching, learning, disciplining, evaluating, celebrating, consoling, and a million other critical functions. As the principalship has evolved and grown, so have the expectations of it. With that in mind, ASCD developed the Principal Leadership Development Framework (PLDF). The PLDF establishes a clear and concise definition of leadership and includes clear targets that support the ongoing growth and development of leaders. Using the Framework, principals will learn to capitalize on their leadership roles: * Principal as Visionary * Principal as Instructional Leader * Principal as Engager * Principal as Learner and Collaborator The PLDF also offers 17 criteria of effective practice that allow leaders to focus on behaviors that have the greatest direct effect on the culture and status of learning and teaching. Coupled with the PLDF are tools for self-reflection that help principals identify and strengthen their reflective habits. Whether you want to develop your own capacities or support the development of a group of principals, assistant principals, or aspiring principals, The Principal Influence can help channel your efforts in ways that promote successful teaching and student learning.

Contrary to what many believe, the answer is not tied to a certain kind of personality but to specific behaviors and actions that have positive effects on student achievement—behaviors and actions that any school leader can learn and put into practice. Over the last decade, thousands of school principals have done that, by implementing "balanced leadership," an approach that recognizes the need to both maintain and challenge the status quo in order to move schools forward. Building on the analysis that was first reported in School Leadership That Works, the authors of Balanced Leadership identify the 21 responsibilities associated with effective leadership and show how they relate to three overarching responsibilities: * Establishing a clear focus—keeping the work and the conversations targeted on the issues that matter most; * Managing change—understanding how to skillfully steer through the challenges associated with making improvements, both large and small; and * Developing a purposeful community—creating a sense among all teachers and staff that they are invested in student outcomes and that they can make a difference. For each of these areas, key points and specific practices are described in detail and illustrated with stories from school principals who have successfully learned how to become great leaders. Step-by-step tools provide clear guidance for readers who are ready to make the same kind of journey—one with the potential to transform them and the schools they serve.

The role includes increasingly complex problems to be solved and increasingly deep piles of paperwork to complete. Unfortunately, the managing of employees, the preparing and justifying of resource – both personnel and financial - projections, and the complexities involved in operating facilities safely and legally are the most frequently mentioned reasons for why school leaders begin to question their career choice. And, while faculties and colleges of education as well as principals’ professional associations offer courses and workshops, very few adequately address the gaps that exist between theory and practice in a way that would mitigate this reticence to lead in this climate. A Principled Guide to Managing and Leading School Operations fills a gap in the training of educational leaders by orienting them to the vitally important business operations required to run a school. This book therefore is for all school leaders who wish they had been given a school operations field manual, and it is for those who prepare them who might wish to rebalance anew the current propensity of principal preparation programs that blindly privilege leadership identity over developing the requisite management acumen teachers, parents and the public expect.

Book excerpt: Professional demands on school administrators continue to multiply exponentially. Effective administrators require solid preparation programs, continuing professional development, extensive experience, mentoring, and the support of supervisor and school colleagues. Chapter 1, "Intuitive Ways of Knowing," references research on intuition, including information about levels of intuitive input, and the different stages involved in intuitive explorations. Chapter 2, "Developing Behaviors of Intuitive Leadership," examines intuitive leaders and their abilities to "read" the environment. Some behaviors characteristic of intuitive leaders include recognition of timing, a willingness to act, understanding the importance of shared values, embracing shared leadership, trust, collaboration, and a balance in personal and positional political power. Chapter 3, "Powerful Communication: Reading the Silent Language," demonstrates that communication dexterity is paramount to a leader's success, and provides insight into several forms of communication, including listening, speaking, writing, body language, and silence. Intuitive skills can be applied to practical situations involving the art of communication. Chapter 4, "Intuition and the Paradoxes of Leadership," addresses the major paradoxes of leadership, including the leader-versus-manager orientation, autocrat-versus-indecisive decision-making styles, "facilitator-versus-obstructor," and delegating-versus-leader-centered approaches to solving problems. Leaders must provide opportunities for both themselves and their constituents to become skilled in problem solving and decision making. Leaders must empower the staff to make possible the delegation of authority. Effective leaders should realize the important benefits that result from creating collaborative climates. Book excerpt: "We can't do that in our school district." "I don't have time to add that to my curriculum." "We're fighting against impossible odds with these students." Sound familiar? School improvement can often feel like a losing battle, but it doesn't have to be. In this fully revised and updated second edition of The Learning Leader, Douglas B. Reeves helps leadership teams go beyond excuses to capitalize on their strengths, reduce their weaknesses, and reset their mindset and priorities to achieve unprecedented success. A critical key is recognizing student achievement as more than just a set of test scores. Reeves asserts that when leaders focus exclusively on results, they fail to measure and understand the importance of their own actions. He offers an alternative—the Leadership for Learning Framework, which helps leaders identify and distinguish among four different types of educators and provide more effective, tailored support to - "Lucky" educators, who achieve high results but don't understand how their actions influence achievement. - "Losing" educators, who achieve low results yet keep doing the same thing, expecting different outcomes. - "Learning" educators, who have not yet achieved the desired results but are working their way toward excellence. - "Leading" educators, who achieve high results and understand how their actions influence their success. Reeves stresses that effective leadership is neither a unitary skill nor a solitary activity. The Learning Leader helps leaders reconceptualize their roles in the school improvement process and motivate themselves and their colleagues to keep working to better serve their students.
