Since 1931, the South Carolina Historical Association has published an annual, peer-reviewed journal of historical scholarship. Preeminent scholars such as Frank Vandiver, Dan T. Carter, and Orville Vernon Burton are among the contributors to this collection, an essential resource for historical synthesis of the Palmetto State’s experience during that era.
Book Synopsis Confederate Slave Impressment in the Upper South by : Jaime Amanda Martinez
Download or read book Confederate Slave Impressment in the Upper South written by Jaime Amanda Martinez and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2013-12-07 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under policies instituted by the Confederacy, white Virginians and North Carolinians surrendered control over portions of their slave populations to state authorities, military officials, and the national government to defend their new nation. State and local officials cooperated with the Confederate War Department and Engineer Bureau, as well as individual generals, to ensure a supply of slave labor on fortifications. Using the implementation of this policy in the Upper South as a window into the workings of the Confederacy, Jaime Amanda Martinez provides a social and political history of slave impressment. She challenges the assumption that the conduct of the program, and the resistance it engendered, was an indication of weakness and highlights instead how the strong governments of the states contributed to the war effort. According to Martinez, slave impressment, which mirrored Confederate governance as a whole, became increasingly centralized, demonstrating the efficacy of federalism within the CSA. She argues that the ability of local, state, and national governments to cooperate and enforce unpopular impressment laws indicates the overall strength of the Confederate government as it struggled to enforce its independence.

Book Synopsis States at War, Volume 6 by : Richard F. Miller
Download or read book States at War, Volume 6 written by Richard F. Miller and published by University Press of New England. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 858 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although many Civil War reference books exist, Civil War researchers have until now had no single compendium to consult on important details about the combatant states (and territories). This crucial reference work, the sixth in the States at War series, provides vital information on the organization, activities, economies, demographics, and laws of Civil War South Carolina. This volume also includes the Confederate States Chronology. Miller enlists multiple sources, including the statutes, Journals of Congress, departmental reports, general orders from Richmond and state legislatures, and others, to illustrate the rise and fall of the Confederacy. In chronological order, he presents the national laws intended to harness its manpower and resources for war, the harsh realities of foreign diplomacy, the blockade, and the costs of states’ rights governance, along with mounting dissent; the effects of massive debt financing, inflation, and loss of credit; and a growing raggedness within the ranks of its army. The chronology provides a factual framework for one of history’s greatest ironies: in the end, the war to preserve slavery could not be won while 35 percent of the population was enslaved.

Book Synopsis Refugee Life in the Confederacy by : Mary Elizabeth Massey
Download or read book Refugee Life in the Confederacy written by Mary Elizabeth Massey and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2001-05-01 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civil War spawned tens of thousands of southern refugees. Some fled from bombardment or rumor of invasion. Others were exiled by enemy commanders. Virtually none anticipated the extreme hardships they would encounter. Through diligent research in manuscripts and newspapers, Mary Elizabeth Massey brings vivid detail to all aspects of southern refugee life. Thrilling tales of displaced people scrambling for trains or making river crossings recapture the poignancy of civilians trapped between advancing and retreating armies. Massey examines the psychological effects of the war on the homeless, the humor they found in their difficulties, their activities in adopted communities, private and public aid, and legislation concerning them. The refugees created enormous problems for the southern war effort as they crowded into the ever-contracting areas of the Confederacy, disabling wartime transportation and contributing to the congestion of cities to the point that it was difficult to feed and house them. Historians have long recognized the refugees’ importance, and writers of fiction their appeal, but Massey’s Refugee Life in the Confederacy—originally published in 1964—marks the first full telling of their story. With a new introduction by George C. Rable, this comprehensive study is essential to a thorough understanding of the Civil War.
