Book Synopsis Tip Clearance Control Using Plasma Actuators by :
Download or read book Tip Clearance Control Using Plasma Actuators written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents experimental results from a series of experiments using active flow control to improve the performance and efficiency of turbine tip clearance flows. The flow control was based on plasma actuators. Two experimental facilities were used as part of this research project. The first was a low-speed, large-scale turbine cascade using Pak-B turbine blades. The second was a smaller scale, high-speed cascade with low aspect ratio. The active flow control was design to act as a plasma squealer". Specifically, the plasma force was oriented perpendicular to the camber line in order to resist the leakage flow through the tip gap. Both steady and unsteady forcing was used as a method for manipulating natural jet-like instabilities that existed as the leakage flow separated in the tip gap. The results have indicated that the unsteady plasma forcing was as effective as the passive squealer geometry in reducing the losses that occurred in the wake of the blade tip.

Book Synopsis Active Flow Control of Wind Turbine Blades by : Víctor Maldonado
Download or read book Active Flow Control of Wind Turbine Blades written by Víctor Maldonado and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Active flow control is a technique to improve the fluid dynamics of an aerodynamic body utilizing an active actuator and energy input. Much progress on the application of active flow control techniques for wind turbine blades has been accomplished in the last decade. The main focus has been on regulating unsteady aerodynamic blade loads and vibration by controlling the flow locally along the blade. The trailing edge flap and synthetic jet actuator have emerged among the most effective actuators for wind turbines. This chapter gives an overview of active flow control techniques, with a specific focus on the application and use of the piezoelectric synthetic jet for vibration reduction of small-scale wind turbine blade models tested in a wind tunnel. Using the techniques presented, the global flow field over the blade was altered such that flow separation was mitigated. Consequently, this resulted in a significant decrease in the vibration of the blade. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) was used to quantify the flow field over the blade. Using synthetic jets, the flow over the blade was either fully or partially reattached, depending on the angle of attack. Current and future research in this field has evolved to understanding and controlling realistic 3D vortex flows typical of actual wind turbines utilizing scaled-down rotor platforms. To this end, the author presents the design and operation of a rotor test tower with custom blades embedded with synthetic jet actuators aimed at investigating multi-scale blade tip vortex interaction and breakdown that may lead to blade vibration and noise reduction.

Book Synopsis Case Study by : Nihar H. Chhatiawala
Download or read book Case Study written by Nihar H. Chhatiawala and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary Labs, LLC is an early-stage company composed of three students at Case Western Reserve University which aimed to evaluate the feasibility of commercialization of a novel dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma actuator as an active flow control (AFC) method in wind turbines. The hypothesized benefits of DBD plasma actuators for AFC include improved energy capture from wind, low cost, and ease of implementation. This thesis is a two-part case study. The first part emulates a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase I Proposal for the technology and includes discussions arguing that a strong commercial potential for the proposed technology exists in the United States and that technical development is feasible. The second part includes miscellaneous sections outside the scope of an SBIR proposal, leading to a discussion of the Boundary Labs team decision to discontinue development of this technology.

Book Synopsis An Experimental Study of a Pulsed DC Plasma Flow Control Actuator by :
Download or read book An Experimental Study of a Pulsed DC Plasma Flow Control Actuator written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experiment on the effects of a pulsed DC plasma actuator on a separated flow in a low speed wind tunnel was conducted. The actuator consisted of two asymmetric copper electrodes oriented normal to the flow separated by a dielectric barrier and mounted on a flat plate in the center of the tunnel. A contoured insert was constructed and used to create an adverse pressure gradient in the test section comparable to a Pak-B low pressure turbine blade distribution. Suction was applied from the upper wall to induce separation along the flat plate over the electrodes. The DC power supply was kept constant at 8.5 kV and power was regulated through a high voltage fast transistor switch. The pulse width of the switch remained at 250 ns with the frequency ranging from 25 to 100 Hz. All studies were conducted at a Reynolds number of 30,000 to simulate takeoff and other low speed conditions. It was found that the DC pulsed plasma actuator could reattach the flow but not consistently at these conditions. Furthermore no evidence was found to indicate that coherent vortical structures are responsible for reenergizing the boundary layer and controlling separation.
