Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Positive Action," a K-12 program, aims to promote character development, academic achievement, and social-emotional skills and to reduce disruptive and problem behavior. The program is based on the philosophy that you feel good about yourself when you think and do positive actions, and there is always a positive way to do everything. The curriculum includes six units; some grades have a review for a seventh unit. All lessons are scripted and use classroom discussion, role-play, games, songs, and activity sheets or text booklets. Optional components that may or may not be implemented as part of the program are: site-wide climate development; drug education for grade 5 and middle school; conflict resolution; counselor, parent, and family classes; and community/coalition components. The What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) reviewed 13 studies on "Positive Action." One study of "Positive Action" met the WWC evidence standards, and one study met standards with reservations. The studies included 56 elementary schools in Florida and Hawaii. Both studies examined results on students' behavior and academic achievement. The WWC considers the extent of evidence for "Positive Action" to be moderate to large for behavior and for academic achievement. No studies of "Positive Action" that met WWC evidence standards with or without reservations addressed outcomes in the domain of knowledge, attitudes, and values. The WWC rated the program as having positive effects on both behavior and academic achievement. Character education, an evolving field, is beginning to establish a research base. Download or read book Positive Action. What Works Clearinghouse Intervention Report written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Positive Action," a K-12 program, aims to promote a positive self-concept, character development, healthy behavior, and social-emotional skills and to reduce disruptive and problem behavior. The curricula for elementary and middle school students each have seven units per kit, with nine kits per grade level. The high school curriculum has six units per kit, with four kits per grade level. The studies included 56 elementary schools in Florida and Hawaii. Both studies examined results on students' behavior and academic achievement. Both studies assessed elementary school student outcomes in the behavior and academic achievement domains. When the What Works Clearinghouse (WWC) aggregated the results in each of these domains, the average effect sizes were statistically significant. So the WWC rated the program as having positive effects on both behavior and academic achievement. Character education, an evolving field, is beginning to establish a research base. The evidence presented in this report is limited and may change as new research emerges. (Contains 8 footnotes.) [This publication was produced by the What Works Clearinghouse. Data can make the difference for today’s embattled school counseling programs, and this insightful book shows how to collect and manage it. School counseling scholar and advocate Dr. Trish Hatch describes how K–12 counselors can replace "random acts of guidance" with intentional, well-timed interventions, based on student data. Aligned with current research and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards, this essential resource includes a complete set of tools and templates for data collection, action-planning and reporting. Readers will learn how to Develop a robust counseling curriculum that supports the Common Core Standards and drop-out prevention Measure progress through pre- and post-assessments Deliver compelling reports that demonstrate your program’s impact This well-timed book is designed to help school counseling programs make the most of limited resources and measurably demonstrate how their work improves school performance. "Trish Hatch provides extensive examples of how school counselors can enhance student achievement and well-being through the use of data. Not only does she provide useful examples and a framework from which counselors can explore data, she helps counselors understand some of the very common barriers to change within school systems." —Jennifer Betters-Bubon, Assistant Professor UW Whitewater, WI "As practicing school counselors, we rarely find a text that tells us what to do, why we should do it, and how to do it. Priceless!" —Franciene Sabens, School Counselor Chester High School, IL Looking for more resources on data in school counseling? Check out the online course Data! Data! Data!
