Download or read book Action Plan for the Conservation of the Greater Horseshoe Bat in Europe (Rhinolophus Ferrumequinum) written by Roger Ransome and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication results from a request by the Standing Committee of the Bern Convention for action plans to be drawn up for the conservation of two bat species as a contribution to the Euro-Species Programme. (The second action plan concerns the Pond bat (Myotis Dasycneme)). The greater horseshoe bat is widespread in Europe with major declines in its population recorded this century. Both roosts and foraging habitats are threatened. Action has been taken in many of the countries that this bat inhabits and this has at least, stabilised populations. Further conservation plans may vary between the current centres of population and areas of depleted or extinct populations. This action plan gives detailed background to the current knowledge of the status and ecology of the pond bat and how this relates to threats to the species. The plan includes detailed objectives, points for further discussion and possible mechanisms for implementation of the action plan.

Book Synopsis Action Plan for the Conservation of Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) in the Danube River Basin by : Jürg Bloesch
Download or read book Action Plan for the Conservation of Sturgeons (Acipenseridae) in the Danube River Basin written by Jürg Bloesch and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Six species of sturgeons are native to the Danube River Basin. The need for conservation action is urgent, given that recent observations in the Lower Danube indicate that all sturgeon populations are near extinction. Due to the high commercial value of sturgeon products, in particular caviar, the pressure from proaching and illegal trade remains intense. These species will not survive unless fishing practices are greatly addressed, and both migration routes and habitats for all life-cycle stages are protected. Through national action and international co-ordination, this action plan aims to secure viable populations of all Danube sturgeon species by sustainable management and restoration of their natural habitats and migratory corridors
Book Synopsis European Strategy for the Conservation of Invertebrates by : John R. Haslett
Download or read book European Strategy for the Conservation of Invertebrates written by John R. Haslett and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invertebrate animals make up the greater part of the world's biological diversity and are present in all habitats, where they perform essential ecological functions. Their survival is fundamental to the maintenance of life as we know it. Large numbers of invertebrate species are under severe threat of extinction in Europe, or are already extinct due to the extreme transformations that European habitats have suffered due to human activities. The European Strategy for the conservation of invertebrates, adopted by the Council of Europe (Bern Convention) in 2006, addresses the loss of invertebrate biodiversity and promotes their conservation and the services they provide in terrestrial and non-marine aquatic environments. The Strategy offers appropriate guidance to European governments, other decision-makers, land managers, scientists and teachers that have potential influence on invertebrate conservation.

Book Synopsis The Pan-European Ecological Network--taking Stock by : Marie Bonnin
Download or read book The Pan-European Ecological Network--taking Stock written by Marie Bonnin and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace of biodiversity decline is quickening worldwide. Habitat break-up, pollution, over-use of natural areas and the creation of artificial landscapes increase the rate of erosion, while reducing species' opportunity for migration, dispersion and exchange. In 1995, when the European Ministers of the Environment met in Sofia, they launched the Pan-European Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy, so as to strengthen environment and biodiversity conservation policies. The setting up of the Pan-European Ecological Network covering Eurasia was one of the key steps taken under the Strategy. Work has continued on this project, and it is now based on the numerous national, regional and transregional ecological networks being set up throughout Europe. In Kiev, in 2003, the Ministers and heads of delegation noted these positive developments, expressed firm support for the creation of the Pan-European Ecological Network and asked for its constituent parts to be identified and mapped on a pan-European scale. This book looks at the implementation of this Network in the 55 states concerned. It has been written by a team comprising, under the aegis of the Council of Europe, numerous government experts and specialists dealing with the issue of ecological networks. It is intended to reassure Ministers, policy-makers and scientists that they made the right decision in supporting the creation of the Pan-European Ecological Network with a view to (re-)creating a true green infrastructure for Europe.

Book excerpt: The protection of transborder areas in an ecological network system which take account of clusters of conservation areas represents an important step towards protecting natural heritage in Europe. Cross-border co-operation can help provide larger protected areas with uniform management and thus make a considerable contribution to the conservation of biodiversity. This report reflects the transborder co-operation in countries of central and eastern Europe, including Russia, the Baltic countries, Belarus and Ukraine.
Book Synopsis Ecological Network and Local Authorities Sociological Instruments by : Catherine Mougenot
Download or read book Ecological Network and Local Authorities Sociological Instruments written by Catherine Mougenot and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever closer links have been forged between caring for nature on the one hand and human activities on the other. In recent years there has been a shift from an interest in reserve-based nature, which excluded man and human activities, to an increasingly powerful nature-culture relationship. Nature protection became nature conservation and then nature development with the integration of socio-economic and cultural aspects. Within the framework of the setting-up of the Pan-European Ecological Network, these sociological aspects have a great importance for establishing an ecological network where the scientific aspects of biodiversity protection must co-exist with nature management and development.

The aim is to identify sensitive areas, both in terms of areas particularly suitable for the survival of the species and those which represent broad unsuitable patches) and connecting corridors. It is based on the results obtained by the 'Large Carnivores Conservation Areas in Europe' (LCCA) project developed by the Istituto di Ecologia Applicata (IEA) of Rome.
Book Synopsis Code of Practice for the Introduction of Biological and Landscape Diversity Considerations Into the Transport Sector by : Catherine J. Bickmore
Download or read book Code of Practice for the Introduction of Biological and Landscape Diversity Considerations Into the Transport Sector written by Catherine J. Bickmore and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pan-European Biological and Landscape Strategy (1996) aims to halt the degradation of landscape and biological diversity across the European region. Action Theme 2 of the Strategy relates to the integration of landscape and biological diversity into other sectors including transport. This Code of Practice contributes to this progress. The Code relates to linear transport systems, comprising roads, railways and inland navigation along waterways, such as canals and rivers. It aims to assist elected representatives, decision makers, and practitioners as well as nature conservation bodies in the understanding of the main issues and solutions associated with the planning, design and use of linear transportation networks i.e. roads, railways and inland navigation channels, in relation to the landscape and biological diversity. Other modes of transport are outside the scope of this CodeThe Code sets a political and social framework and proposes policy options for the development of new, and the maintenance of existing linear transport systems in relation to biological and landscape diversity. By building on examples, the Code has developed a series of Practice Pointers.
