Book excerpt: The onslaught of literary theory in the post-modernist world of letters has left no institution of learning untouched. But Comparative Literature has had a paradoxical role in this firestorm of new ideas and radical challenges to established modes of study. On the one hand it was in North American centers and departments of Comparative Literature that Russian theoreticians like Lotman and Bakhtin, Czech scholars like Mukarovsky and Dolezel, the Konstanz theoreticians Iser and Jauss and the long list of French critics Barthes, Todorov, Kristeva, Genette and the master semiotician Greimas as well as such intellectual leaders as Lacan, Derrida, Foucault and Ricoeur found an enthusiastic North American following. On the other hand the international established circle of scholars who considered themselves to be the founders of a new more rigorous comparative mode of study were almost overnight upstaged by the radical scepticism that challenged and questioned, above all questioned the very foundations of literary scholarship. This volume is not an attempt at either compromise or surrender by either side. Our aim has been to bring together a representative selection from both sides in reasoned dialogue so that the participants and all who work in Comparative Literature will be more informed about the other side and have a clearer perception of their basis for disagreement and possible agreement. It is only through debates of this nature that the discipline will come of age and develop a coherent theory on its aims and methods.

Book Synopsis Strange Cocktail by : Adriana X. Jacobs
Download or read book Strange Cocktail written by Adriana X. Jacobs and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2018-07-23 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, poets have turned to translation for creative inspiration. Through and in translation, poets have introduced new poetic styles, languages, and forms into their own writing, sometimes changing the course of literary history in the process. Strange Cocktail is the first comprehensive study of this phenomenon in modern Hebrew literature of the late nineteenth century to the present day. Its chapters on Esther Raab, Leah Goldberg, Avot Yeshurun, and Harold Schimmel offer close readings that examine the distinct poetics of translation that emerge from reciprocal practices of writing and translating. Working in a minor literary vernacular, the translation strategies that these poets employed allowed them to create and participate in transnational and multilingual poetic networks. Strange Cocktail thereby advances a comparative and multilingual reframing of modern Hebrew literature that considers how canons change and are undone when translation occupies a central position—how lines of influence and affiliation are redrawn and literary historiographies are revised when the work of translation occupies the same status as an original text, when translating and writing go hand in hand.
Book Synopsis The Threat and Allure of the Magical by : Ashwin Manthripragada
Download or read book The Threat and Allure of the Magical written by Ashwin Manthripragada and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-11 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is borne out of the 17th Annual Interdisciplinary German Studies Conference at the University of California, Berkeley. The essays gathered here cover a broad range of topics moving from intersections between the occult and the political, to the entanglement of conceptions of the magical, modernity, media, and aesthetics. The first two essays primarily rely on historical analysis and present a wealth of original research. One chronicles the construction of the witch in Early Modern print media, while the other unfolds the complex relationship of an infighting Third Reich with a multifaceted occult deemed at once fascinating and menacing. The third essay in the collection combines critical, literary, and feminist theories in order to address the magical as an aspect of the fairy tale – a theme in the works of Jelinek and Adorno – and as a challenge to Enlightenment reason. The next two essays, influenced heavily by narratology and semiotics, present close readings of 19th century novellas that question the nexus of mediality and perception, magic and narrative structure. The first of these two essays deals with the liminality of the marionette as it is caught between its mechanical and marvelous qualities in E. T. A. Hoffman’s Rat Krespel (Councilor Krespel), while the latter addresses the collapse of reality mirrored by the magical collapse of metaphor in Theodor Storm’s Pole Poppenspäler (Paul the Puppeteer). The last essay rounds out the compilation with a focus on new media. With close analyses of the films in Lang’s Mabuse trilogy, this essay charts their relation to the enchantment and disenchantment of the medium of film.
Book Synopsis An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870-2005: General studies by : Michael Robinson
Download or read book An International Annotated Bibliography of Strindberg Studies 1870-2005: General studies written by Michael Robinson and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2008 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This copiously annotated bibliography documents and examines the whole range of commentary on Strindberg's works and activity in many fields besides the plays for which he is internationally best known. These include his prose fiction and poetry, his work as an historian and natural historian, and his relationship to the other arts, most notably his painting. It is concerned with both lasting works of literary and dramatic criticism, as well as reviews of his books and plays in the theatre, and some more ephemeral material, all of this in several languages. Organised generically and by subject and individual work, the bibliography enables the reader to trace the changing impact of Strindberg and his works in various countries and during different periods. It is thus very much a study in reception as well as a bibliographical record of published material. It traces the developing image of Strindberg and his writing both during his lifetime and in subsequent years, and with frequent cross reference offers a comprehensive overview of a literary and existential project that has rarely been matched for its multifaceted diversity. The bibliography is published in three parts. Volume 2, The Plays (978-0-947623-82-1) and Volume 3, Prose, Poetry, Miscellaneous (978-0-947623-83-8) are also now available. Michael Robinson is Emeritus Professor of Drama and Scandinavian Studies at the University of East Anglia, Norwich.
Download or read book The Arthur of the French written by and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This major reference work is the fourth volume in the series "Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages". Its intention is to update the French and Occitan chapters in R.S. Loomis’ "Arthurian Literature in the Middle Ages: A Collaborative History" (Oxford, 1959) and to provide a volume which will serve the needs of students and scholars of Arthurian literature. The principal focus is the production, dissemination and evolution of Arthurian material in French and Occitan from the twelfth to the fifteenth century. Beginning with a substantial overview of Arthurian manuscripts, the volume covers writing in both verse (Wace, the Tristan legend, Chretien de Troyes and the Grail Continuations, Marie de France and the anonymous lays, the lesser known romances) and prose (the Vulgate Cycle, the prose Tristan, the Post-Vulgate Roman du Graal, etc.).
