Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuropsychology: A Textbook of Systems and Psychological Functions of the Human Brain provides a comprehensive account of the physiography of the brain and its working systems. This textbook explores how the human brain produces behavior and mental function out of identifiable systems or subcomponents. Comprised of 18 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the systems of the brain as well as the architecture of the brain and nervous system. The discussion then turns to the micropsychology of the brain; the fabric of the nervous system; and how the brain becomes modified by experience. The following chapters focus on the motor and auditory functions of the brain; the physiological mechanisms of sexual behavior; how emotion is generated out of the activity of specific mechanisms of the brain; and how the brain conducts vision. The regions of the brain involved in space perception, sleep, memory, learning, and language are also considered. The final chapter is devoted to discrete centers of the brain responsible for mental functions. This monograph will be a useful source of knowledge for neurologists, psychiatrists, psychologists, physiologists, neurosurgeons, and others interested in the human brain and its behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efferent Organization and the Integration of Behavior is a nine-chapter text that discusses the hypotheses and alternative conceptualizations of efferent mechanisms, as well as the neural basis of patterned movement. The opening chapters examine several behavioral categories, the neural mediation of movement, and the distinction between efferent response and efferent motor processes. These chapters also present a revised theory of the role of the motor system in physiological regulation and neural-metabolic integration in energy production for behavior. These topics are followed by considerable chapters devoted to efferent organization of specific brain sections, including the motor cortex, pyramidal system, globus pallidus, substantia nigra, diencephalon, hippocampus, and neocortex. This text also deals with the instrumental conditioning based on alimentary or food reinforcements. A chapter discusses the constraints on theoretical interpretations of neuroanatomical circuitry functions of noradrenergic and cholinergic brain systems. The concluding chapter describes the relationship between the motor integration systems of extrapyramidal structures and the motivational systems of limbic structures. This chapter also looks into the anatomical organization of self-stimulation and the microelectrode data, which delineate the response of single neurons to stimulation at hypothalamic self-stimulation sites.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological Foundations of Emotion is a detailed account of the relations between brain structure, functions, and emotions based on the results of experimental work and theoretical modeling. A range of issues are examined, such as whether there are structures, circuits, or biochemical events in the brain that control emotional expressions or experience; the effects of lesions and electrical stimulation on emotions; and the role of genetics in the expression of emotion. Comprised of 16 chapters, this volume begins with a presentation of general models of brain functioning. The first chapter deals with the neural substrate for emotion and cites evidence showing that the conventional concept of a limbic system underlying all emotions is not adequate. The discussion then turns to ethological and evolutionary factors of emotion, with emphasis on neuroendocrine patterns of emotional response; ictal symptoms relating to the nature of affects and their cerebral substrate; the anatomy of emotions; and neural systems involved in emotion in primates. Subsequent chapters present different but overlapping brain models of aggression and examine the role of biochemistry in understanding emotions. This book will be of interest to biologists and psychologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following injury or disease, neural circuitry can be altered to varying degrees leading to highly individualized characteristics that may or may not resemble original function. In addition, lost or partially damaged circuits and the effects of biological recovery processes coupled with learned compensatory strategies create a new neuroanatomy with capabilities that are often not functional or may interfere with daily life. To date, the majority of approaches used to treat neurological dysfunction have focused on the replacement of lost or damaged function, usually through the suppression of surviving neural activity and the application of mechanical assistive devices. Restorative Neurology of Spinal Cord Injury offers a different and novel approach. Focusing on the spinal cord and its role in motor control, the book details the clinical and neurophysiological assessment process and methods developed throughout the past half century by basic and clinical scientists. Then, through the use of specialized clinical and neurophysiological testing methods, conduction and processing performed within the surviving neural circuitry is examined and characterized in detail. Based on the results of such assessment, treatment strategies, also described in this book, are applied to augment, rather than replace, the performance of surviving neural circuitry and improve the functional capacity of people who have experienced injury to their spinal cords.
