Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-friction surface systems are used to support the DETR`s skidding standard on high stress sites. Until recently an epoxy resin was used as a binder to obtain the necessary skid resistance, but with increased demand for high-friction surface systems, alternative systems have come onto the market using different resins as binders. This report describes a series of road trials, set up to compare the performance of a range of resin systems (epoxy-resin, polyurethane-resin, acrylic-resin and rosin-ester). Systems are ranked in terms of maintained skid resistance, texture depth and longevity. Consideration of the different laying techniques employed for different resins indicates that the choice of resin type may be influenced by constraints imposed while laying as well as the performance requirements in service. The results from a series of laboratory tests which have been devised to simulate accelerated wear under trafficking support the road trial conclusions. The results have been used to develop performance-related criteria for a Highway Authorities Product Approval Scheme (HAPAS) certification procedure which can be used to assess existing systems and systems that may be developed in future.

Bees buzz and roses bloom as summer arrives. The fall turns pumpkins orange and leaves red and gold, and the wind grows cold. In wintertime, snow twirls down, and the flames in the fireplace leap and glow. Next year, it will all happen again, but it will be a little different, too. Everything is always growing and changing on a farm. Beloved author Anne Rockwell takes young readers through the year. Megan Halsey's charming collage illustrations are the perfect complement to this delightful introduction to the wonders of the seasons.

Book excerpt: The founder of Four Seasons Hotels shares the philosophy and values that have made his legendary brand How did a child of immigrants, starting with no background in the hotel business, create the world's most admired and successful hotel chain? And how has Four Seasons grown dramatically, over nearly a half century, without losing its focus on exceptional quality and unparalleled service? Isadore Sharp answers these questions in his engaging memoir, which doubles as a powerful guide for leaders in any field. He recalls the surprising history of his company, starting with its roots in his father's small construction business, which Sharp joined after getting a degree in architecture. Shifting into hotels wasn't easy, and he learned by trial and error. His breakthrough was a vision for a new kind of hotel, featuring superior design, top-quality amenities, and, above all, a deep commitment to service. Sharp realized that customers would gladly pay extra for a "home away from home" experience. But that would be possible only if everyone-from managers and supervisors to bellmen, servers, and housekeepers-was fully engaged. The front-line staff, who have the most contact with guests, can make or break a five-star reputation. Readers will be fascinated to learn how Four Seasons does it, year after year, in more than thirty countries around the world.
