Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health Effect Assessments of the Basic Acrylates is the first book to provide a comprehensive discussion of the toxicological and ecotoxicological effects of the five major high-production volume acrylates: acrylic acid and the methyl, ethyl, butyl, and 2-ethylhexyl esters. Insightful interpretations of the effects of these acrylates on human populations and the environment are presented, and the severity of observed toxic responses is documented. The nature of the responses is discussed in relation to the metabolism and biological reactivity of the acid and each of the esters. Current areas of investigative toxicology as they apply to these chemicals are critically reviewed. The book also presents discussions on other significant aspects of the subject, including the mechanisms of forestomach tumor formation and the role of irritation in toxic responses. This volume stands alone as a complete review of these monomers and will be the standard reference for toxicologists, industrial hygienists, chemical engineers, chemists, and other researchers who need a foundation for research, testing, and development of sound risk assessments for these chemicals.

Book excerpt: The Chemical Transformations of C1 Compounds A comprehensive exploration of one-carbon molecule transformations The chemistry of one-carbon molecules has recently gained significant prominence as the world transitions away from a petroleum-based economy to a more sustainable one. In The Chemical Transformations of C1 Compounds, an accomplished team of chemists delivers an in-depth overview of recent developments in the field of single-carbon chemistry. The three-volume book covers all major C1 sources, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, methanol, formic acid, formaldehyde, carbenes, C1 halides, and organometallics. The editors have included resources discussing the main reactions and transformations into feedstock chemicals of each of the major C1 compounds reviewed in dedicated chapters. Readers will discover cutting-edge material on organic transformations with MeNO2, DMF, DCM, methyl organometallic reagents, CCl4, CHCl3, and CHBr3, as well as recent achievements in cyanation reactions via cross-coupling. The book also offers: Thorough introductions to chemical transformations of CH4, methods of CH4 activation, chemical transformations of CH3OH and synthesis alkenes from CH3OH Comprehensive explorations of the carbonylation of MeOH, CH2O in organic synthesis, organic transformations of HCO2H, and hydrogen generation from HCO2H Practical discussions of the carbonylation of unsaturated bonds with heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, as well as the carbonylation of C(sp2)-X bonds and C(sp3)-X bonds In-depth examinations of carbonylative C-H bond activation and radical carbonylation Perfect for organic and catalytic chemists, The Chemical Transformations of C1 Compounds is also an ideal resource for industrial chemists, chemical engineers, and practitioners at energy supply companies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now, more than ever, foods come packaged in containers designed for direct cooking or heating, which often causes the movement of substances - indirect additives - into foods. Because of their unique characteristics, plastics or polymeric materials (PM) have become the most important packaging material for food products. The safety assessment of plastics intended for use in contact with foodstuffs or drinking water continues to present a serious challenge. Indirect Food Additives and Polymers: Migration and Toxicology studies the potential hazards of indirect additives for human health and develops recommendations for their safe manufacture and use. It contains an impressive review of basic regulatory, toxicological, and other scientific information necessary to identify, characterize, measure, and predict the hazards of nearly 2,000 plastic-like materials employed in packaging. The author presents the data underlying federal regulations - previously unavailable a single volume. The entry for each chemical provides: Prime Name Molecular or Structural Formula Molecular Mass Synonyms CAS Number RTECS number Properties Application and Exposure Migration Data Acute Toxicity Repeated Exposure Short-Term Toxicity Long-Term Toxicity Immunotoxicity of Allergenic Effect Reproductive Toxicity Mutagenicity Carcinogenicity Chemobiokinetics Standards Guidelines Regulations Recommendations References International in scope, the Handbook of Indirect Polymeric Additives in Food and Water: Migration and Toxicology offers comprehensive data on the toxic effects of polymeric materials and their ingredients. You will find the most information on plastics and polymeric materials- their migration and toxicology - in this resource.

Book excerpt: The growing concern about where energy rich chemicals for the future will come from has stimulated a resurgence of interest in the potentialities of microbial fermentations to assist in meeting anti cipated demands for fuels and chemicals. While much attention has been given recently to the early deployment of alcohol production plants and similar currently available technologies, the potential future developments have received much less attention. One of the intentions of the present symposium was to look ahead and try to perceive some of the prospects for future fermentation technology. In order to accomplish this, a symposium program of sizable diversity was developed with workers giving a representative cross section of their particular specialty as an indicator of the status of basic information in their area. In addition, an attempt was made to elicit from the various participants the types of fundamental infor mation which should be generated in the coming years to enable new fermentation technology to proceed expeditiously. In organizing the symposium particular effort was made to involve workers from the academic, industrial and governmental scientific communities.
