Correlation of measured frequencies with available theories indicates that existing theories are applicable over a broader range than previously shown. The cavity configuration with a partial covering downstream amplified tonal intensities. The frequency of the tones depended on cavity size, not on cavity open area. Introducing upstream disturbances decreased the amplitude of the cavity tones. Scheiman, J. Langley Research Center NASA-TM-78658, L-12022 RTOP 505-10-23-05...

Book excerpt: Between 1986 and 1990, a large database was compiled at AEDC from the results of a series of wind tunnel experiments investigating the aerodynamics of flow over open cavities. The database, known as the Weapons Internal Carriage and Separation (WICS) database, covered four experiments that were completed in the AEDC wind tunnels. The initial database documentation focused on the test and data, but included very little analysis of the results. The purpose of the present work is to report analysis of the cavity acoustics and trajectory data. In addition, an updated engineering mathematical model for cavity aeroacoustics is presented.

Book excerpt: A recessed, 42-inch deep acoustic lining has been designed and installed in the 40- by 80- Foot Wind Tunnel (40x80) test section to greatly improve the acoustic quality of the facility. This report describes the test section acoustic performance as determined by a detailed static calibration-all data were acquired without wind. Global measurements of sound decay from steady noise sources showed that the facility is suitable for acoustic studies of jet noise or similar randomly generated sound. The wall sound absorption, size of the facility, and averaging effects of wide band random noise all tend to minimize interference effects from wall reflections. The decay of white noise with distance was close to free field above 250 Hz. However, tonal sound data from propellers and fans, for example, will have an error band to be described that is caused by the sensitivity of tones to even weak interference. That error band could be minimized by use of directional instruments such as phased microphone arrays. Above 10 kHz, air absorption began to dominate the sound field in the large test section, reflections became weaker, and the test section tended toward an anechoic environment as frequency increased. This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cavity flow-acoustic resonances may occur when a fluid stream flows past a recessed cavity in a wall. These resonances may lead to high unsteady pressure levels. The resonance involves a coupling between the instability wave which propagates downstream on the shear-layer that spans the open face of the cavity, and acoustic waves that propagate back upstream inside and outside the cavity. These waves are coupled by the scattering processes at the ends of the cavity. Previous theoretical research considered cavities in a wall that bounds an infinite stream. In many of the experiments on cavity resonances, however, the cavity is placed in a side wall of a wind tunnel. When the surrounding wind tunnel walls are not acoustically treated, the resonances can be very strong. My research is a theoretical investigation of the case of a cavity in a side wall of a wind tunnel. Recently, a mode trapping phenomenon has been proposed as an explanation for the very strong cavity resonances in the wind tunnel case. The mode trapping occurs when the critical frequency of a mode in the tunnel-cavity region is slightly lower than the critical frequency of the corresponding mode in the tunnel region. The region between these two critical frequencies is defined as a frequency window. Experiments show that very high pressure levels are observed in these frequency windows. The goal of my research is to develop a global theory of cavity resonances in the wind tunnel geometry. The global theory couples solutions for the instability wave and the acoustic waves through scattering analyses at the ends of the cavity. Resonance frequencies, spatial mode shapes and linear growth rates are predicted. The theoretical predictions are consistent with experimental measurements and demonstrate that the mode trapping phenomenon explains the experimentally observed behavior.

Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of acoustic disturbances and means of suppression from ventilated transonic wall samples was performed in a low-background-noise research tunnel at AEDC. Configurations for ventilation investigated were longitudinally slotted walls, with and without baffles in the slots, slats versus round rods, and perforated walls with normal or inclined circular holes with varied hole sizes and varied diameter/wall thickness ratio. Comparative acoustic data were acquired over a broad range of subsonic Mach numbers. Several of these wall configurations were found to emit intense, discrete whistling noise with overall root-mean-square amplitudes as large as five percent of the free-stream dynamic pressure. In all cases except one, suppressed noise levels not exceeding 0.75 percent of the free-stream dynamic pressure were achieved compared to a background noise level for the tunnel of approximately 0.47 percent with solid test section walls. Noise suppression was accomplished by means of appropriate devices added to the wall samples which could have application to actual transonic wind tunnel test sections. (Author).
