This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: This book presents the physical science experiments in a space microgravity environment conducted on board the SJ-10 recoverable satellite, which was launched on April 6th, 2016 and recovered on April 18th, 2016. The experiments described were selected from ~100 proposals from various institutions in China and around the world, and have never previously been conducted in the respective fields. They involve fluid physics and materials science, and primarily investigate the kinetic properties of matter in a space microgravity environment. The book provides a comprehensive review of these experiments, as well as the missionâs execution, data collection, and scientific outcomes.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PUBLIC ABSTRACT: The purpose of this thesis is to study the effects of microgravity, surface geometry, and heat dissipation per unit area (heat flux) on boiling heat transfer. Boiling is able to move a significant amount of heat for a small area in comparison to other heat transfer methods. Space systems could benefit from the development of thermal management systems that use boiling heat transfer because they would be smaller, more robust, and less expensive. However, boiling is an extremely complicated process which has no comprehensive models to predict its behavior. Multiple correlations have been developed which relate heat transfer efficiencies to various system parameters, but they can only be applied to specific heat transfer systems, lack considerations for the actual mechanisms involved in boiling, and give erroneous results if used beyond their limited applications. This research concluded that twisting thin wire heaters creates crevices that reduce the amount of heat needed to make the system boil. This is particularly beneficial in microgravity because heat transfer prior to boiling is very inefficient. Additionally, this study characterized the observation of a new mode of jet flows, which results in many small bubbles leaving the wire and creates a fluid flow that would not normally exist in microgravity. The results of this study show that sustained boiling can exist in microgravity and in some instances can be more effective than boiling in terrestrial gravity.
Book Synopsis Acoustic Analysis and Detection of the Effects of Vapor-Liquid Interfacial Morphology on Pool-Boiling Heat Transfer for Different Materials by : Mustafa Almadih

This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, boiling regimes have been identified and analyzed along with the corresponding vapor-liquid interfacial morphologies and heat transfer behaviors during quenching of a heated rod using acoustic measurement technique. The quenching experiments are performed in a custom-made high-temperature quenching facility by using cylindrical test samples that are embedded with thermocouples. The experimental work includes investigating the whole range of pool boiling regimes from film boiling through transition boiling to nucleate boiling using python's tools of signal processing. The boiling signals are recorded by a special hydrophone (i.e., the HTI-02-DHPC/D hydrophone) to register the different sound waves under the water. This special hydrophone is capable of working in boiling water to record high and low frequency signals for both long and short-term periods in subcooled pool boiling. The latter has many applications such as the operations of advanced nuclear reactors, chemical processing, power generation, etc. In this work, the technique of signal processing is employed to identify the boiling regimes and to seek a new understanding of the boiling dynamics, particularly vapor-liquid interfacial morphologies by applying a new tool for signal processing. Special focus is made on identifying the different acoustic features generated in different boiling regimes including film boiling, transition boiling, boiling crisis, and nucleate boiling by using python signal processing tools. Physically, each boiling regime should have a characteristic dominant acoustic signal that can be identified. By correlating the acoustic signatures with the boiling heat fluxes in various regimes, the minimum and maximum heat fluxes measured during the quenching of the cylindrical samples can be identified from the recorded acoustic signals during subcooled pool boiling. Furthermore, an artificial Intelligent (AI) deep learning is applied in Conventional pool quenching experiments for in-depth understanding the behavior of the boiling dynamics. Acoustic emission (AE) measurement is installed in the verities of subcooled fluid work to investigate boiling noise from different rod sample materials. Zirconium (Ze) and Chromium (Cr) are tested to investigate the entire boiling regime and classified the pattern's sound for each material. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is applied to detect the boiling regime from two different heated surfaces test sample materials. The results show that the classification of film boiling, transition boiling, and nucleate boiling from the two materials in different subcooled fluids were accurate within an average of 99.6\%.
