Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a mathematical point of view, acoustics and electromagnetism exhibit similar phenomena and are tackled with the same kind of technique. Jones's exhaustive study is unique in providing a unified treatment of the two fields, bringing out their common and disparate features and showing how they cross-fertilize one another. The book is designed so that the reader with a familiarity with either Maxwell's Equations or the equation of sound waves in fluid dynamics can follow the developments in both fields without difficulty. This is a comprehensive treatment which will provide a needed reference for researchers in applied mathematics and mathematical physics but also caters to the student, who is taken up to the frontiers of research with the help of appropriate exercises. Engineers with any sort of mathematical competence, particularly electrical engineers and those concerned with communications technology, will need to have access to it.

This book is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. In this fourth edition, a number of significant additions have been made including a new chapter on transmission eigenvalues and a new section on the impedance boundary condition where particular attention has been made to the generalized impedance boundary condition and to nonlocal impedance boundary conditions. Brief discussions on the generalized linear sampling method, the method of recursive linearization, anisotropic media and the use of target signatures in inverse scattering theory have also been added.

Book excerpt: Electromagnetic theory offers fascination and challenge from both a physical and a mathematical perspective. This monograph contains the newest results on the use of electromagnetic probes to interrogate dielectric material structures for material properties and geometry. This volume systematically exploits interface phenomena, the electrodynamics of material responses, and time dependent interrogating signals in an integrated manner. The authors begin with basic electromagnetics, such as Maxwell's equations, and present modeling, theory, and computational results.

Book excerpt: It has now been almost ten years since our first book on scattering theory ap peared [32]. At that time we claimed that "in recent years the development of integral equation methods for the direct scattering problem seems to be nearing completion, whereas the use of such an approach to study the inverse scattering problem has progressed to an extent that a 'state of the art' survey appears highly desirable". Since we wrote these words, the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves has grown from being a few theoreti cal considerations with limited numerical implementations to a weH developed mathematical theory with tested numerical algorithms. This maturing of the field of inverse scattering theory has been based on the realization that such problems are in general not only nonlinear but also improperly posed in the sense that the solution does not depend continuously on the measured data. This was emphasized in [32] and treated with the ideas and tools available at that time. Now, almost ten years later, these initial ideas have developed to the extent that a monograph summarizing the mathematical basis of the field seems appropriate. This book is oUf attempt to write such a monograph. The inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves can broadly be divided into two classes, the inverse obstacle problem and the inverse medium problem.

Book excerpt: Volume One begins with a systematic development of basic concepts (strain, stress, stiffness and compliance, viscous clamping) and coordinate transformations in both tensor and matrix notation. The basic elastic field equations are then written in a form analogous to Maxwell's equations. This analogy is then pursued when analyzing wave propagation in both isotropic and anisotropic solids. Piezoelectricity and bulk wave transducers are treated in the final chapter. Appendixes list slowness diagrams and material properties for various crystalline solids.

Book excerpt: The inverse scattering problem is central to many areas of science and technology such as radar and sonar, medical imaging, geophysical exploration and nondestructive testing. This book is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. In this third edition, new sections have been added on the linear sampling and factorization methods for solving the inverse scattering problem as well as expanded treatments of iteration methods and uniqueness theorems for the inverse obstacle problem. These additions have in turn required an expanded presentation of both transmission eigenvalues and boundary integral equations in Sobolev spaces. As in the previous editions, emphasis has been given to simplicity over generality thus providing the reader with an accessible introduction to the field of inverse scattering theory. Review of earlier editions: “Colton and Kress have written a scholarly, state of the art account of their view of direct and inverse scattering. The book is a pleasure to read as a graduate text or to dip into at leisure. It suggests a number of open problems and will be a source of inspiration for many years to come.” SIAM Review, September 1994 “This book should be on the desk of any researcher, any student, any teacher interested in scattering theory.” Mathematical Intelligencer, June 1994

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This invaluable book provides a comprehensive framework for the formulation and solution ofnumerous problems involving the radiation, reception, propagation, and scattering of electromagnetic and acoustic waves. Filled with original derivations and theorems, it includes the first rigorous development of plane-wave expansions for time-domain electromagnetic and acoustic fields. For the past 35 years, near-field measurement techniques have been confined to the frequency domain. Now, with the publication of this book, probe-corrected near-field measurement techniques have been extended to ultra-wide-band, short-pulse transmitting and receiving antennas and transducers. By combining unencumbered straightforward derivations with in-depth expositions of prerequisite material, the authors have created an invaluable resource for research scientists and engineers in electromagnetics and acoustics, and a definitive reference on plane-wave expansions and near-field measurements. Featured topics include: * An introduction to the basic electromagnetic and acoustic field equations * A rigorous development of time-domain and frequency-domain plane-wave representations * The formulation of time-domain, frequency-domain, and static planar near-field measurement techniques with and without probe-correction * Sampling theorems and computation schemes for time-domain and frequency-domain fields * Analytic-signal formulas that simplify the formulation and analysis of transient fields * Wave phenomena, such as ``electromagnetic missiles"" encountered only in the time domain * Definitive force and power relations for electromagnetic and acoustic fields and sources." Book excerpt: The book represents an exhaustive study of the scattering properties of acoustically soft and hard bodies and of perfect conductors, presented for 15 geometrically-simple shapes. Such shapes are important in their own right and as a basis for synthesizing the radiation and scattering properties of more complex configurations. Each shape is treated in a separate chapter whose contents are presented in stylized format for easy reference. Emphasis is placed on results in the form of formulae and diagrams. Although no detailed derivation are included, an outline of methods in scattering theory is given in the Introduction. (Author).

This book was released on 2013-08-28 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acoustics is a mature field which enjoys a never ending youth. New developments are induced by either the search for a better understanding, or by technological innovations. Micro-fabrication techniques introduced a whole new class of microdevices, which exploit acoustic waves for various tasks, and in particular for information processing and for sensing purposes. Performance improvements are achievable by better modelling tools, able to deal with more complex configurations, and by more refined techniques of fabrication and of integration in technological systems, like wireless communications. Several chapters of this book deal with modelling and fabrication techniques for microdevices, including unconventional phenomena and configurations. But this is far from exhausting the research lines in acoustics. Theoretical analyses and modelling techniques are presented, for phenomena ranging from the detection of cracks to the acoustics of the oceans. Measurement methods are also discussed, which probe by acoustic waves the properties of widely different systems.
