Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Straggling behind the mild 2003 success of cartoonist Chris Ware's first facsimile collection of his miscellaneous sketches, notes, and adolescent fantasies arrives this second volume, updating weary readers with Ware's clichéd and outmoded insights from the late twentieth century. Working directly in pen and ink, watercolor, and white-out whenever he makes a mistake, Ware has cannily edited out all legally sensitive and personally incriminating material from his private journals, carefully recomposing each page to simulate the appearance of an ordered mind and established aesthetic directive. All phone numbers, references to ex-girlfriends, "false starts," and embarrassing experiments with unfamiliar drawing media have been generously excised to present the reader with the most pleasant and colorful sketchbook reading experience available. Included are Ware's frustrated doodles for his book covers, angry personal assaults on friends, half-finished comic strips, and lengthy and tiresome fulminations of personal disappointments both social and sexual, as well as his now-beloved drawings of the generally miserable inhabitants of the city of Chicago. All in all, a necessary volume for fans of fine art, water-based media, and personal diatribe. This hardcover is attractively designed and easy to resell.

Book excerpt: Acme Attractions tells the story of a place, and its people, that found themselves at the heart of one of the country's great cultural moments. While living and working through a now-legendary period of the capital's history, Don Letts and Jeannette Lee found themselves simultaneously experiencing the pleasures and pitfalls of youth while witnessing the birth and heady, early excitement of punk. Their story, told here through a conversation that is warm, intelligent and compelling, touches on the revolutionary feelings of that time, as fashion, politics, music and art were all re-made in real time and, as we now know, things would never be the same again.

Book excerpt: Studios for Artists: Concepts and Concrete is a collaborative project between Acme Studios and Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. The book presents the preoccupations, activities and achievements emerging from the ongoing dialogue between two of the UK's leading art institutions, affordable studio provider Acme Studios and art college Central Saint Martins. The form, function and future of the artist's studio is the central focus of the collaboration and of the publication. The subject of studio provision is approached from the partners' different but entirely complementary roles and perspectives, as is their shared commitment to create new models of support for students after graduation. Studios for Artists presents a series of written and visual essays showing how the partners formalised and intensified their work, resulting, amongst other initiatives, in the design and construction of an award-winning studio building and the establishment of a sustainable graduate studio programme. The book provides a remarkable insight into the world of art education and of the artist in London at the beginning of the 21st century. It reveals not just the ongoing challenges faced by art education, but also the threat to affordable studio provision where spiralling property prices threaten this vital, but generally unacknowledged, part of the contemporary visual arts ecology.

Book excerpt: No, Anti-Book is not a book about books. Not exactly. And yet it is a must for anyone interested in the future of the book. Presenting what he terms “a communism of textual matter,” Nicholas Thoburn explores the encounter between political thought and experimental writing and publishing, shifting the politics of text from an exclusive concern with content and meaning to the media forms and social relations by which text is produced and consumed. Taking a “post-digital” approach in considering a wide array of textual media forms, Thoburn invites us to challenge the commodity form of books—to stop imagining books as transcendent intellectual, moral, and aesthetic goods unsullied by commerce. His critique is, instead, one immersed in the many materialities of text. Anti-Book engages with an array of writing and publishing projects, including Antonin Artaud’s paper gris-gris, Valerie Solanas’s SCUM Manifesto, Guy Debord’s sandpaper-bound Mémoires, the collective novelist Wu Ming, and the digital/print hybrid of Mute magazine. Empirically grounded, it is also a major achievement in expressing a political philosophy of writing and publishing, where the materiality of text is interlaced with conceptual production. Each chapter investigates a different form of textual media in concert with a particular concept: the small-press pamphlet as “communist object,” the magazine as “diagrammatic publishing,” political books in the modes of “root” and “rhizome,” the “multiple single” of anonymous authorship, and myth as “unidentified narrative object.” An absorbingly written contribution to contemporary media theory in all its manifestations, Anti-Book will enrich current debates about radical publishing, artists’ books and other new genre and media forms in alternative media, art publishing, media studies, cultural studies, critical theory, and social and political theory.
