Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acid mine drainage is pollution that occurs when water trapped in abandoned coal mines leaks out and pollutes the local water systems. One of the most abundant metals found in acid mine drainage is iron. Iron often precipitates out of the system naturally in the form of iron(III) hydroxide, leading to a decrease in fluid pH. Iron oxidizing bacteria can promote this reaction process, assisting in the removel of Fe(II) ions from the acid mine drainage. The increase in acidity can be detrimental to surrounding wildlife. The purpose of this paper is to develop a model that includes the hydrodynamics and reactive transport of ions in the system. The model predictions will be compared to local field data and those found in the literature. In addition the model analyzes the precipitation of the iron(III) hydroxide crust as a function of space and time. Several parameters are varied to observe predictions made by the model with different physical circumstances. Forcing low concentrations of oxygen in the system produces slower the rate of iron(III) hydroxide crust growth. Increasing the angle of inclination while holding the flow rate fixed causes a very small decrease in iron(III) hydroxide crust growth. Decreasing the flow rate of the system while maintaining a fixed angle of inclination to simulate a thinning of the liquid layer produces a slower iron(III) hydroxide crust growth rate. When the angle of inclination is varied with fixed fluid film thickness, as the angle of inclination increases, iron(III) hydroxide crust growth decreases. When the forward rate for surface reactions and the reverse rate for bulk reactions are increased, both decreased the rate of iron(III) hydroxide crust production. When the reverse rate for surface reactions and the forward rate for bulk reactions are increased, they increase iron(III) hydroxide crust growth rate. An increase in iron oxidizing bacteria can increase the oxidation of Fe(II). Therefore, an increase in the abundance of iron oxidizing bacteria can increase the rate of iron(III) hydroxide crust growth.

Book excerpt: With conventional acid mine drainage remediation consisting of acid neutralization and metal sedimentation, operation and maintenance costs can be overwhelming. If the sludge, primarily iron oxide in southeastern Ohio, is effectively processed, it can be utilized as an industrial grade pigment. At many locations, however the iron content in the sludge may be below standards due to aluminum contamination. In this work, we tested precipitating iron at low pH with the aid of acidophilic iron- oxidizing bacteria to produce a pure pigment. Using acid mine drainage from seeps in southeastern Ohio, at a range of pHs and inoculated with a local bacterial consortium, metal precipitate was produced and analyzed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine if the abilities of certain bacteria to oxidize ferrous iron or to convert sulfate to hydrogen sulfide could be applied to the neutralization and subsequent removal of iron from difficult-to-treat mine drainage waters. If one or both of these concepts could be successfully utilized, the expense of adequately treating these types of problem waters might be significantly reduced. Laboratory studies demonstrated that both pure cultures and fresh field cultures of acidophilic iron bacteria could readily oxidize ferrous iron in both synthetic and natural acid mine drainage waters. Approximate requirements of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen and phosphorus by the iron bacteria were established. Limestone neutralizations of partially oxidized acid mine waters were conducted. Although sulfate-reducing bacteria were isolated, attempts to grow the cultures or produce hydrogen sulfide at pH values below 5.5 were unsuccessful.

Book excerpt: The effects of pH, nutrients, and organic carbon on iron oxidation rates by mixed cultures of iron-oxidizing bacteria collected from three different extremely The effects of pH, nutrients, and organic carbon on iron oxidation rates by mixed cultures of iron-oxidizing bacteria collected from three different extremely acidic AMD sites were investigated for the possibility of remediating the Truetown AMD at the Sunday creek, OH. Four values of pH (2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 4.0), four concentrations of ammonium (0.01 M, 0.05 M, 0.1 M, and 0.5 M), five concentrations of phosphate (0.1 mM, 0.5 mM, 1.0 mM, 5.0 mM, and 10.0 mM), and three concentrations of glucose (0.05 M, 0.1 M, and 0.2 M) were tested. The best pH, ammonium concentration, and phosphate concentration were found to be 2.5, 0.1 M, and 5.0 mM, respectively, resulting in an iron oxidation rate of 0.570 hr-1, while the organic carbon resulted in approximately 52% inhibition after only one subculture. The iron oxidation rates achieved in this study surpassed the maximum iron oxidation rate achieved in most studies reported in the literature except for two studies where they adopted significantly different operation conditions. The best culture was found to be the one collected from Wolf Run site of predominantly A. ferrooxidans. Applying these results to Truetown AMD achieved a 12-fold increase in biotic iron oxidation rates, and a 1327-fold increase compared to the abiotic iron oxidation rates at Truetown site. In conclusion, iron-oxidizing bacteria, and nutrient addition significantly enhanced iron oxidation rates at very low pH. With further economical and operational optimization, AMD remediation by microorganisms can become a fast, sustainable, and low-cost treatment method exceeding other available AMD remediation techniques.

Book excerpt: "During coal and iron mining, pyrite is often exposed to oxygen, causing acid mine drainage (AMD). Acid mine drainage has characteristic traits of: a rust color, low pH levels (around 3 or 4) and high concentrations of sulfate, metal sulfates and heavy metals. Sulfate reducing bacteria (SRB) are often utilized in acid mine drainage treatment by implementing them into biochemical reactors (BCR). As SRB break down various carbon sources, bicarbonate is produced, raising the pH and generating hydrogen sulfide which reacts with numerous metals. This approach can be troublesome, as SRBs do not thrive at low pH levels often associated with AMD. Previous studies have found acidophilic sulfate reducing bacteria (aSRB) able to reduce sulfate and remove metals at pH values as low as 3.25. However these studies often use easily degradable carbon sources like ethanol, lactic acid and glycerol. In the present study, various solid carbon sources at a pH range of 3.0 to 6.0, high and low sulfate concentration, and media that provided either sulfate or iron as an electron acceptor were tested. Of the five carbon sources, sweet potato and horse manure resulted in black precipitate, indicating possible sulfate reduction. To mimic a BCR, column studies were conducted. After flowing pH 3.5 to 4.0 synthetic AMD through the upflow columns for 117 days, pH was raised to between 6.0 and 7.0. Sulfate reduction was evident in one column containing sweet potato and inoculum, but no others were active in this ongoing study. A leading hypothesis is that complete reduction was inhibited by the presence of fermenting bacteria."--Abstract, page iii.

Biological means to remediate the damage caused by AMD is the most effective and economical treatment procedure. Due to the long treatment duration efforts to remediate lands using this technique has not been explored a lot. This research examines the various biological means to establish a treatment scheme for an acid mine affected area in Northeast Ohio. The various plausible schemes included phytoremediation using plants found onsite - Phragmites, Cattail, Goldenrod and Soybean and the possibility of microbial remediation. A site characterization was done which examined the microbial numbers across the transect and at various depth over three different seasons and a kinetic rate model was established to help predict the behavior of the microorganisms present in the soil at varying conditions. The number of iron oxidizers was found to be greater in areas with lesser toxic metals (average iron oxidizers at the three sites closest to the emergence point was 1.15E+05 CFU/g, corresponding average count for heterotrophic microorganisms was 8.16E+04 CFU/g. Heterotrophic microorganisms were found in greater numbers further away from the emergence point than iron oxidizers (average of the three points farthest from the emergence point over second and third sample 1.04E+06 CFU/g). Microbial numbers were correlated to iron oxidation rates. The rates were found to be higher at points with higher number of iron oxidizers. Seasonal variation in microbial numbers indicated an overall decrease in numbers during the winter (average iron oxidizers winter sample 2.93E+04 CFU/g, average iron oxidizers for summer sample 6.33E+05 CFU/g). Phragmites and Cattail were found to hyperaccumulate Al from the soil. Phragmites was also able to uptake substantial amounts of Fe (shoot concentration of 6.74 mg). The contributions made by the other species of plants to accumulate various metals were also notable. The higher biomass and overall capacity of Phragmites to uptake various metals make it an ideal choice if phytoremediation is employed on site. Microbial remediation was found to be currently occurring at a slow pace on the site. Even though the rate of remediation was found to be slow, the presence of remedial actions by the plants and microbes on site, without any intervention, shows that bioremediation potential of the site.

Book excerpt: This research was completed to assess passive treatment methods for mitigation of acid mine drainage (AMD) at a former mine site in British Columbia. The objectives were to determine if suitable passive treatment methods were available, and if concentrations of Cd, Zn, and other key contaminants in groundwater could be reduced to below regulatory standards during bench-scale testing. Biological treatment with sulphate reducing bacteria (SRB) was selected, and bench-scale treatment testing was conducted using columns amended with low cost organic sources. Removal of more than 99% Cd, 93% Co, 96 % Cu, 86% Ni and 98% Zn was observed, resulting in metals concentrations in treated effluent consistently lower than applicable groundwater standards. Sustainability attributes of treatment with SRB and the potential to recover valuable metals are discussed, and recommendations for further testing and implementation are provided. Keywords : acid mine drainage, passive treatment, sulphate-reducing bacteria, bioreactor.
