Book Synopsis Achieving Flight by : John G. Burdick
Download or read book Achieving Flight written by John G. Burdick and published by Archway Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most Americans are aware that the Wright brothers had been the first to fly a powered Flying Machine in 1903. But John J. Montgomery was the first to fly a glider of his own design in 1883, a full twenty years before the Wright brothers. Achieving Flight, by John G. Burdick and Bernard J. Burdick, provides an historic and scientific assessment of the role of John J. Montgomery (1858-1911), one of Californias own, in the early years of flight in America. It tells the story of Montgomery, an eminent scientist whose achievements in aeronautics and electricity have largely been forgotten. This biography narrates how, during his days as a student at St. Ignatius College, he was fortunate to be instructed by some of the most renowned Jesuit scientists ousted from Europe, earning a masters of science degree in 1880. The Burdicks also provide a critical analysis of Montgomerys prescient understanding of aeronautics relative to other practitioners and researchers prior to, during, and after his time. Noting Montgomerys importance in aeronautical history, Achieving Flight reviews his significant accomplishments in having his pilots fly successfully in high air (up to 4,000 feet, being lofted there by a hot-air balloon), but also evaluates the scientific correctness of his ideas, which were decades ahead of the times.

Book excerpt: This is the second volume of the annotated translation of Tsong Khapa’s Illumination of the Hidden Meaning (sbas don kun gsal), a magnificent commentary on the Cakrasamvara Tantra. This is the first English translation of this important work, which marked a milestone in the Tibetan understanding and practice of the Indian Buddhist tantras. It covers the vows, observances, and conduct of the initiated yogi, particularly in relation to the yoginis, whose favor he must cultivate. It describes in great detail the rites of the tradition, including homa fire sacrifice and the uses of the mantras of the mandala’s main deities. The author provides a trilingual English-Tibetan-Sanskrit glossary. Together with the present author’s related publications in this series—including a translation of the Cakrasamvara root tantra (2007) and critical editions of its Sanskrit and Tibetan texts (2012), and the first volume of this master Tibetan commentary (2017)—the reader will have the first full study of this important tantra available in English.

Book Synopsis Pegasus, the Heart of the Harrier by : Andrew Dow
Download or read book Pegasus, the Heart of the Harrier written by Andrew Dow and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2009-08-20 with total page 831 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume chronicles the making of the Harrier Jump Jet—the innovative Cold War fighter aircraft designed to operate from virtually anywhere. In 1957, the British engine manufacturer Bristol Siddeley turned aircraft design on its head with the creation of the Pegasus engine. Until then, aircraft designs would seek out suitable engines. Now the Pegasus was an engine in search of a suitable aircraft. The result was the famous Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the first military airplane capable of vertical takeoff and landings. To this day, Harrier Jump Jets are still in front-line service with air forces around the world including the Royal Air Force and US Marine Corps. In this volume, former Bristol Siddeley executive Andrew Dow offers an in-depth look at the Pegasus engine's original design concept, production and flight testing. Dow then covers the developments and improvements that have been made over the years. He also includes experiences of operational combat flying, both from land and sea. Written in straightforward prose that avoids technical jargon, Pegasus, The Heart of the Harrier is copiously illustrated with many previously unseen photographs and diagrams.

Download or read book Further Undiscovered Archives of Sherlock Holmes written by John Lawrence and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2023-11-22 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sealed away from public view more than a century at the instruction of their author, Dr John Watson, these three cases of Sherlock Holmes are available here for the first time. Like the earlier volume in this series, each reveals the role Holmes and Watson played in investigating crimes involving actual historical events and prominent personages. "A Grotesquery in Limehouse" explores Holmes' involvement in solving the mutilation and murder of a Belgian businessman near the London docks, a crime that is linked to the despicable role of King Leopold II in brutally exploiting the people and resources of the Belgian Congo. "The Disappearances at the Flannan Light" recounts Holmes' role in solving a century and a quarter long mystery concerning what befell the three keeps who vanished without a trace from the remote Scottish Flannan Lighthouse on the cusp of the twentieth century. "The Case of the Shattered Propeller" plunges Holmes and Watson into the inquiry into the disastrous crash of the Wright Flyer during its military trial flight in Fort Myer, Virginia in 1908, revealing long-concealed aspects of this tragic moment in aviation history. These stories have been prepared for public release by John Lawrence, who has edited numerous historic Holmes adventures in the volumes of the MX Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures as well as the novel, Sherlock Holmes and the Affair at Mayerling Lodge. He worked for 38 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and is a history Ph.D. and professor living in Washington DC and Santa Fe, New Mexico. His non-fiction works include Arc of Power: Inside the Speakership of Nancy Pelosi, and Class of '74: Congress After Watergate and the Roots of Partisanship.

Book Synopsis How Blind is the Watchmaker? by : Neil Broom
Download or read book How Blind is the Watchmaker? written by Neil Broom and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-01-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this book shows that modern materialistic science - for all its ability to analyse in truly impressive detail the workings of the living world - remains powerless to explain the phenomenon of life itself. Drawing on a variety of examples from experience of the biological world as a practising scientist, the author shows that the qualities of purpose, intentionality and mind suffuse almost every aspect of the living realm, yet these same qualities remain totally unaccounted for by science itself. The author argues that the all too common humanistic dismissal of these crucial components of reality undermines the integrity of science itself and is intellectually perverse. He argues that scientific materialism, despite its enormous influence in shaping today’s high-tech world, actually presents a gross trivialization of the concept of life. Further, while unable of itself to provide ultimate answers to the mystery of life, this science uncovers facts that point beyond these to a transcendent, theistic dimension - or, in the words of the title - to a Watchmaker who, indeed, is not blind.
