Book Synopsis The Overachievers by : Alexandra Robbins
Download or read book The Overachievers written by Alexandra Robbins and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2006-08-08 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of Pledged returns with a groundbreaking look at the pressure to achieve faced by America's teens In Pledged, Alexandra Robbins followed four college girls to produce a riveting narrative that read like fiction. Now, in The Overachievers, Robbins uses the same captivating style to explore how our high-stakes educational culture has spiraled out of control. During the year of her ten-year reunion, Robbins goes back to her high school, where she follows heart-tuggingly likeable students including "AP" Frank, who grapples with horrifying parental pressure to succeed; Audrey, whose panicked perfectionism overshadows her life; Sam, who worries his years of overachieving will be wasted if he doesn't attend a name-brand college; Taylor, whose ambition threatens her popular girl status; and The Stealth Overachiever, a mystery junior who flies under the radar. Robbins tackles teen issues such as intense stress, the student and teacher cheating epidemic, sports rage, parental guilt, the black market for study drugs, and a college admissions process so cutthroat that students are driven to suicide and depression because of a B. With a compelling mix of fast-paced narrative and fascinating investigative journalism, The Overachievers aims both to calm the admissions frenzy and to expose its escalating dangers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is after years of teaching English to young children that this new course, Creative English has been put together. Two things were in mind during its preparation: · What do children enjoy while learning a language? Stories are based on children’s interests and therefore hold their attention. For the first few classes, the lessons draw upon pupils’ everyday experiences, allowing links to be made between home and school. · What does a teacher need while teaching a language? The books are structured to meet the requirements of teachers across the board. Someone who has just started a career in teaching would find it stimulating enough to give his or her best. Others, with years of experience, could use it as a tool to carry forward all the good they have been doing. Goyal Brothers Prakashan

Book Synopsis Learning a New Land by : Carola Suárez-Orozco
Download or read book Learning a New Land written by Carola Suárez-Orozco and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One child in five in America is the child of immigrants, and their numbers increase each year. Very few will return to the country they barely remember. Who are they, and what America do they know? Based on an extraordinary interdisciplinary study that followed 400 newly arrived children from the Caribbean, China, Central America, and Mexico for five years, this book provides a compelling account of the lives, dreams, and frustrations of these youngest immigrants. Richly told portraits of high and low achievers are packed with unexpected ironies. When they arrive, most children are full of optimism and a respect for education. But poor neighborhoods and dull--often dangerous--schools can corrode hopes. The vast majority learn English--but it is the English of video games and the neighborhood, not that of standardized tests. For some of these children, those heading off to college, America promises to be a land of dreams. These lucky ones have often benefited from caring mentors, supportive teachers, or savvy parents. For others, the first five years are marked by disappointments, frustrations, and disenchantment. How can we explain their varied academic journeys? The children of immigrants, here to stay, are the future--and how they adapt will determine the nature of America in the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis English Classes in Slumber by : S.-H. Gyemyong Ahn
Download or read book English Classes in Slumber written by S.-H. Gyemyong Ahn and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why some Korean high school students sleep during English classes in spite of the emphasized value of English in their society. It examines how this sleeping-in-class phenomenon can be understood by means of such marginalized students’ emic outlooks on themselves, the target language, their teachers, schools, and society/culture; and by means of the views of teachers who have experienced such in-class sleepers. To understand the phenomenon more holistically, it pursues a multi-disciplinary approach drawing on studies of demotivation and amotivation, psychological needs, and student experiences of schooling, as well as sociocultural theories of learning and agency and of interpersonal dynamics, among others. On the basis of a multi-modal analysis of interview data from the student and teacher participants, it theoretically interprets the phenomenon at the classroom (‘micro-’), school (‘meso-’) and society-culture (‘macro-’) levels. Taking a humanistic/existential approach to education, it subsequently presents a number of cultural actions that it advocates implementing in a situation-sensitive manner to help in-class sleepers and their educational institutions awaken from their chronic slumber. Lastly, it presents practical and theoretical implications for more humanistic pedagogy, and global studies of student disengagement, in English-as-a-foreign-language classes.
