Book excerpt: In this ideal introduction to black history, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar examines the lives of heroic African Americans and offers their stories as inspiring examples for young people, who too rarely encounter positive black role models in history books or in the media. Profiled here are Peter Salem, the volunteer soldier who turned the tide at Bunker Hill; Joseph Cinque, leader of a daring revolt on the slave ship Amistad; Frederick Douglass, self-taught writer-orator and escaped slave who forced President Lincoln to issue the Emancipation Proclamation years ahead of schedule; Harriet Tubman, who led at least three hundred slaves to freedom; Lewis Latimer, whose scientific work was integral to the achievements of Bell and Edison; and many more. Shining a bright light on the touchstones of character, these exemplary stories reemphasize the integral role of African Americans in weaving the fabric of our nation and form an empowering legacy from which Americans of all ages can draw inspiration, wisdom, and pride.

Book excerpt: In Forgotten Legacy, Benjamin R. Justesen reveals a previously unexamined facet of William McKinley’s presidency: an ongoing dedication to the advancement of African Americans, including their appointment to significant roles in the federal government and the safeguarding of their rights as U.S. citizens. During the first two years of his administration, McKinley named nearly as many African Americans to federal office as all his predecessors combined. He also acted on many fronts to stiffen federal penalties for participation in lynch mobs and to support measures promoting racial tolerance. Indeed, Justesen’s work suggests that McKinley might well be considered the first “civil rights president,” especially when compared to his next five successors in office. Nonetheless, historians have long minimized, trivialized, or overlooked McKinley’s cooperative relationships with prominent African American leaders, including George Henry White, the nation’s only black congressman between 1897 and 1901. Justesen contends that this conventional, one-sided portrait of McKinley is at best incomplete and misleading, and often severely distorts the historical record. A Civil War veteran and the child of abolitionist parents, the twenty-fifth president committed himself to advocating for equity for America’s black citizens. Justesen uses White’s parallel efforts in and outside of Congress as the primary lens through which to view the McKinley administration’s accomplishments in racial advancement. He focuses on McKinley’s regular meetings with a small and mostly unheralded group of African American advisers and his enduring relationship with leaders of the new National Afro-American Council. His nomination of black U.S. postmasters, consuls, midlevel agency appointees, military officers, and some high-level officials—including U.S. ministers to Haiti and Liberia—serves as perhaps the most visible example of the president’s work in this area. Only months before his assassination in 1901, McKinley toured the South, visiting African American colleges to praise black achievements and encourage a spirit of optimism among his audiences. Although McKinley succumbed to political pressure and failed to promote equality and civil rights as much as he had initially hoped, Justesen shows that his efforts proved far more significant than previously thought, and were halted only by his untimely death.

Book excerpt: From the award-winning author of Breaking the Chains and Black Indians comes a complete history of Black Americans in New York State. Chronological, with photos throughout, and with new contributions by Herb Boyd, here is an essential book for teachers, librarians and young readers. From the arrival of the first enslaved Africans in New Amsterdam in 1609 to the Harlem Renaissance to the first Black mayor of New York City to the impact of the Black Lives Matter movement, here is the complete and newly updated history of Black Americans in New York. First published in 1997, Black Legacy reasserts the essential work of teacher and historian William Loren Katz, who was committed to documenting and uplifting the stories of Black Americans’ courage and creativity, resilience and rebellion. In his new introduction, Herb Boyd, who also adds material bringing the book up to the present day, writes that Katz’s oeuvre, “represents the full tableau of Black accomplishments and aspirations.” Here are the Black politicians and poets, abolitionists, athletes and activists, the first Black children to attend public school, the journalists who covered their stories, and those like Paul Robeson, W.E.B. DuBois, Frederick Douglass, Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, the Black Panthers, and others who fought for Black freedom. Sojourner Truth, Madame C.J. Walker, the growth of the Seneca Village and Weeksville communities, the Savoy and Cotton clubs of the Jazz Age; the near death of Martin Luther King Jr. at Harlem Hospital, the discovery of an African burial site at Trinity Church in lower Manhattan, Shirley Chisholm’s election to Congress, and so much more can be discovered in these pages. Written with economy and flair, and including historical maps, illustrations, and photographs throughout, Black Legacy is a fascinating read, a necessary teaching tool, and a great addition to the literature of the history of Black America.
