Book excerpt: `Comprises a very helpful resource for students who are obliged to succeed in passing the QTS numeracy test in order to gain QTS. It should provide a valuable resource for students to increase their confidence as well as their competence′ - Mathematics in Schools `The stated aim of this book is to help teacher-trainees prepare for the numeracy test all new entrants to the profession now have to pass. Any trainee worried about the test should find this a useful resource.... As in similar books by Derek Haylock, the mathematical content is written in a clear and accessible style′ - Mike Askew, Times Educational Supplement Quotes from the author′s students `The book is excellent. I think it will present students and others with a valuable resource, not only to help with the QTS test, but also for teaching. I could see myself using it on "dip-in-as-necessary" basis′. `The practice questions were really helpful for checking and consolidating learning. The material was useful for the QTS test, particularly the mental calculations. Many thanks for letting me work through your sample material. I cannot begin to tell you how much more I have learnt! This has definitely made me feel more confident about passing the QTS numeracy skills test! I have definitely demonstrated to myself from this material that my ability to complete calculations mentally has increased. I can calculate faster and with some accuracy now!′ `Comprises a very helpful resource for students who are obliged to succeed in passing the QTS numeracy test in order to gain QTS. It should provide a valuable resource for students to increase their confidence as well as their competence′ - Mathemtics in Schools This book is designed to help teacher-trainees prepare for the Qualified Teaching Standards numeracy test that must now be passed by all entrants to the teaching profession. The author focuses especially on weaknesses in numeracy often observed in adults, and in teacher-trainees in particular. As far as possible, this mathematics is set in the professional context of teaching, drawing on statistics and other data from individual schools, the DfEE and the Qualifications and Curriculum Agency (QCA).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In postindustrial economies such as the United States and Great Britain, the black/white achievement gap is perpetuated by an emphasis on language and language skills, with which black American and black British-Caribbean youths often struggle. This work analyzes the nature of educational pedagogy in the contemporary capitalist world-system under American hegemony. Mocombe and Tomlin interpret the role of education as an institutional or ideological apparatus for capitalist domination, and examine the sociolinguistic means or pedagogies by which global and local social actors are educated within the capitalist world-system to serve the needs of capital; i.e., capital accumulation. Two specific case studies, one in the United States and one in the United Kingdom, are utilized to demonstrate how contemporary educational emphasis on language and literacy parallels the organization of work and contributes to the debate on academic underachievement of black students vis-a-vis their white and Asian counterparts.

Book excerpt: ′The structure [of this book] encourages active participation via reflective activity boxes which further allows for the engagement and consolidation of ideas...Evidence based research is cited resulting in the author suggesting a number of practical activities to encourage progression and continuity in science′ - ESCalate Why do pupils′ learning and motivation slow down markedly as they move from primary to secondary school? Why is this situation worse in science than in any other curriculum subject? This book combines reports of and reflection on best practice in improving progression and continuity of teaching and learning in science - particularly at that transition stage between primary and secondary school. Presenting the views of teachers and pupils on progression, learning and application of science, the book suggests practical ways of improving teaching and learning in science. Each chapter includes examples of learning materials with notes on how these might be used or adapted by teachers in their own classroom settings. Science teaching in secondary schools is often based on assumptions that children know or can do very little, so the job in the secondary school becomes one of showing pupils how to start ′doing science properly′, as if from scratch. The damage that this false view can do to pupils′ learning, motivation and confidence is clear. This book will help teachers to assess children′s prior knowledge effectively and build meaningful and enjoyable science lessons.
