Book excerpt: The analysis of speech of people with Parkinson's disease is an interesting and highly relevant topic that has attracted the research community during several years. The advances in digital signal processing and pattern recognition have motivated the research community to work on the development of computational tools to perform automatic analysis of speech. Most of the contributions on this topic are focused on sustained phonation of vowels and only consider recordings of one language. This thesis addresses two problems considering recordings of sustained phonations of vowels and continuous speech signals: (1) the automatic classification of Parkinson's patients vs. healthy speakers, and (2) the prediction of the neurological state of the patients according to the motor section of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS). Recordings of three languages are considered: Spanish, German, and Czech. German and Czech data were provided by other researchers, and Spanish data were recorded in Medellin, Colombia, during the development of this work. Besides the classical approaches to assess pathological speech, a new method to model articulation deficits of Parkinson's patients is proposed. This new articulation modeling approach shows to be more accurate and robust than others to discriminate between Parkinson's patients and healthy speakers in the three considered languages.

Book excerpt: The International Workshop on Models and Analysis of Vocal Emissions for Biomedical Applications (MAVEBA) came into being in 1999 from the particularly felt need of sharing know-how, objectives and results between areas that until then seemed quite distinct such as bioengineering, medicine and singing. MAVEBA deals with all aspects concerning the study of the human voice with applications ranging from the newborn to the adult and elderly. Over the years the initial issues have grown and spread also in other fields of research such as occupational voice disorders, neurology, rehabilitation, image and video analysis. MAVEBA takes place every two years in Firenze, Italy. This edition celebrates twenty-two years of uninterrupted and successful research in the field of voice analysis.

This book systematically introduces the authors’ research on voice analysis for biomedical applications, particularly pathological voice analysis. Firstly, it reviews the field to highlight the biomedical value of voice. It then offers a comprehensive overview of the workflow and aspects of pathological voice analysis, including voice acquisition systems, voice pitch estimation methods, glottal closure instant detection, feature extraction and learning, and the multi-audio fusion approaches. Lastly, it discusses the experimental results that have shown the superiority of these techniques. This book is useful to researchers, professionals and postgraduate students working in fields such as speech signal processing, pattern recognition, and biomedical engineering. It is also a valuable resource for those involved in interdisciplinary research.

Book excerpt: When it comes to Parkinson's disease, one of the most important issues revolves around early detection and accurate diagnosis. The intricacies of this neurodegenerative disorder often elude timely identification, leaving patients and healthcare providers grappling with its progressive symptoms. Ethical concerns surrounding the use of machine learning to aid in diagnosis further complicate this challenge. This issue is particularly significant for research scholars, PhD fellows, post-doc fellows, and medical and biomedical scholars seeking to unravel the mysteries of Parkinson's disease and develop more effective treatments. Intelligent Technologies and Parkinson’s Disease: Prediction and Diagnosis serves as a beacon of hope in the quest to revolutionize Parkinson's disease diagnosis and treatment. It unveils the remarkable potential of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) in remodeling the way we approach this debilitating condition. With a comprehensive exploration of AI's capacity to analyze speech patterns, brain imaging data, and gait patterns, this book offers a powerful solution to the challenges of early detection and accurate diagnosis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new information and communication technology (ICT) has been deployed in the battle against Parkinson’s disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that is both progressive and disabling with significant impact on quality of life. This book explains the experience following from the achieved results in the REMPARK project on Parkinson’s disease management up to the launch of a new medical product to the European market, STAT-ONTM. The new medical device, STAT-ONTM is a real Holter for the motor symptoms associated to PD. It provides objective information about the severity and distribution of PD motor symptoms and their fluctuations in daily life, allowing for an unbiased and correct monitoring of the patient. This real-time remote monitoring solution gives additional information to neurologists, opening up new possibilities for more effective treatment, more accurate control in clinical trials, and for early detection of motor complications. The number of PD patients is continuously rising, adding complexity, especially in the management at the level of public health. It is an incurable disease, with a symptomatic treatment that tries to alleviate the associated symptoms through a correct adjustment of the medication. For this reason, it is also very important to be aware of changes in the manifestation of the symptoms, which may indicate the need for an adjustment or even a change in the therapy strategy. The intensive complementary use of STAT-ONTM by neurologists, health professionals and researchers, will increase the independence and quality of life of patients, improving their disease management, and contributing to a deeper understanding of the nature of the disease.
