Book excerpt: The error bounds for accuracy of radar cross section (RCS) measurements of targets in clutter are examined in detail. Traditional error bounds are based on precision at every individual aspect angle and on two deterministic sources (target and clutter). In this thesis a model is developed that describes the target and clutter probabilistically. The requirement of accuracy at every point is replaced by a requirement for accuracy of a running average of measured RCS values. The probability distribution of the ratio of the averaged, measured RCS to the averaged, true, free space target RCS is calculated. The standard deviation of this ratio represents how much the averaged, measured RCS data diverages from the averaged, true, free space target RCS. The results show that accuracy improves for increasing signal to clutter ratios, and also for increasing levels of averaging. Even averaging as few as eleven points, this new measure is shown to give more confidence in the measured, averaged results than the traditional approach. (Author).

A street-sized walk, appropriately called the Diag, runs diagonally across this square, connecting its southeast and northwest corners. In 1904 a new engineering building was either started or finished (I do not remember which) to house classrooms. When another engineering building was built on the expanded campus across the street from it many years later, the old building came to be known as West Engine, to distinguish it from the new East Engine. Old West Engine is (or maybe by now, was) a four-story, L-shaped structure that stood at the southeast corner of the original campus. It was built with an arch in it to straddle the Diag at the apex of the L. You walked over the Engineering Arch to get from one leg of the L to the other if you were inside the building, and you walked under it when you entered the campus from the southeast corner. Affixed to the masonry wall of the arch was a plaque I often noted in passing. It bore a quote attributed to Horace Greeley (1811-1872), who I did not know at the time was the founder, editor, and publisher of the New York Tribune. It said, simply, Young man, when theory and practice differ, use your horse sense. The suggestion seems worthy of an exclamation point instead of a period, but I do not remember if it had one.

Book excerpt: This thesis develops a minimum range criterion for radar cross-section measurements by neglecting the phase of the incident field at the target and considering only the amplitude distribution. In contrast to the traditional minimum range criterion, developed for a flat target characterized by specular reflection, the target examined in this thesis is characterized by a number of independent point scatterers located on the target surface. Instead of enforcing point by point accuracy, accuracy of the average target RCS is required, averaging over a number of measurements. The location of the point scatterers on the target are described probabilistically; the expected average measured RCS versus target range is calculated, and compared to results of a Monte-Carlo simulation. The traditional minimum range criterion is compared to the new minimum range criterion. The traditional minimum range criterion, based on phase uniformity across the target, requires minimum measurement ranges that are much larger than those ranges dictated by the new minimum range criterion for targets dominated by point scattering. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, the first edition of The Electrical Engineering Handbook set a new standard for breadth and depth of coverage in an engineering reference work. Now, this classic has been substantially revised and updated to include the latest information on all the important topics in electrical engineering today. Every electrical engineer should have an opportunity to expand his expertise with this definitive guide. In a single volume, this handbook provides a complete reference to answer the questions encountered by practicing engineers in industry, government, or academia. This well-organized book is divided into 12 major sections that encompass the entire field of electrical engineering, including circuits, signal processing, electronics, electromagnetics, electrical effects and devices, and energy, and the emerging trends in the fields of communications, digital devices, computer engineering, systems, and biomedical engineering. A compendium of physical, chemical, material, and mathematical data completes this comprehensive resource. Every major topic is thoroughly covered and every important concept is defined, described, and illustrated. Conceptually challenging but carefully explained articles are equally valuable to the practicing engineer, researchers, and students. A distinguished advisory board and contributors including many of the leading authors, professors, and researchers in the field today assist noted author and professor Richard Dorf in offering complete coverage of this rapidly expanding field. No other single volume available today offers this combination of broad coverage and depth of exploration of the topics. The Electrical Engineering Handbook will be an invaluable resource for electrical engineers for years to come.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Phase Dependence in Radar Cross Section Measurements In the calibration model, where the radar cross section of the calibration target is known, the error signals can be removed from the measurements to obtain an accurate system calibration. When the radar cross section of the target is unknown, only error signals with a constant phase can be removed from the measurements. Error signals that vary in-phase with the theoretical signal Will introduce a bias that increases the uncertainty of the measurements. Book excerpt: Sea Clutter: Scattering, the K Distribution and Radar Performance examines the statistics of radar scattering from the sea surface in terms of their relevance to radar operating in a maritime environment; including remote sensing, surveillance and targeting applications. A lot of the work in the book is based on the compound Kdistribution model for the amplitude statistics of sea clutter. In addition, the book addresses the specification of performance required by customers and the measurement of performance of systems supplied to customers.
