Book excerpt: "We consider the stationary Navier-Stokes equations in the case where both the partial differential equations and boundary conditions are inhomogeneous. Under certain conditions on the data, we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solution of a weak formulation of the equations. Next, a conforming mixed finite element method is presented and optimal estimates for the error of the approximate solution are provided. In addition, the convergence properties of iterative methods for the solution of the discrete nonlinear algebraic systems resulting from the finite element algorithm are analyzed. Numerical examples, using an efficient choice of finite element spaces, are also provided" -- abstract.

Book excerpt: Recently there has been substantial interest in least-squares finite element methods for velocity-vorticity-pressure formulations of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. The main cause for this interest is the fact that algorithms for the resulting discrete equations can be devised which require the solution of only symmetric, positive definite systems of algebraic equations. On the other hand, it is well-documented that methods using the vorticity as a primary variable often yield very poor approximations. Thus, here we study the accuracy of these methods through a series of computational experiments, and also comment on theoretical error estimates. It is found, despite the failure of standard methods for deriving error estimates, that computational evidence suggests that these methods are, at the least, nearly optimally accurate. Thus, in addition to the desirable matrix properties yielded by least-squares methods, one also obtains accurate approximations. Bochev, Pavel B. and Gunzburger, Max D. Book excerpt: "The use of arbitrary spaces to represent the velocities and pressures in the Navier-Stokes equations typically leads to unstable finite element approximations. We show in this paper that if spaces of piecewise polynomial functions are used and if the grid for the velocity field is sufficiently fine compared to the grid for the pressure, then the resulting finite element approximations are stable and converge at the optimal rates" -- abstract.

Book excerpt: Navier-Stokes Equations: Theory and Numerical Analysis focuses on the processes, methodologies, principles, and approaches involved in Navier-Stokes equations, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), and mathematical analysis to which CFD is grounded. The publication first takes a look at steady-state Stokes equations and steady-state Navier-Stokes equations. Topics include bifurcation theory and non-uniqueness results, discrete inequalities and compactness theorems, existence and uniqueness theorems, discretization of Stokes equations, existence and uniqueness for the Stokes equations, and function spaces. The text then examines the evolution of Navier-Stokes equations, including linear case, compactness theorems, alternate proof of existence by semi-discretization, and discretization of the Navier-Stokes equations. The book ponders on the approximation of the Navier-Stokes equations by the projection and compressibility methods; properties of the curl operator and application to the steady-state Navier-Stokes equations; and implementation of non-conforming linear finite elements. The publication is a valuable reference for researchers interested in the theory and numerical analysis of Navier-Stokes equations.

Book excerpt: The ever increasing demand for accurate numerical methods has led to the development of more and more sophisticated methods for simulating fluid flow. These methods are often designed to handle a specific flow regime or be valid under specific circumstances. What is needed in the field is a method that is accurate and robust over a wide range of conditions. Here, we propose a finite element method designed to work over a broad range of flow regimes and remain consistent and accurate in each regime. This is accomplished utilizing a mixed finite element method whose properties are rigorously analyzed to demonstrate the method's effectiveness at handling these different flow regimes. We first use standard mathematical techniques to prove that the method is stable and obtains optimal error estimates for the non-isothermal incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We then demonstrate on a series of test cases that the method accurately captures the physics of the non-isothermal incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Next, we extend our method to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations where again the order of accuracy is demonstrated, this time using a series of numerical experiments. Finally, we present a series of compressible flow test cases to prove that the method can capture the physics of this regime.
